<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - O'Reilly's guest Hoenig again advocated military strikes on Iran while discussing economy</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/o-reilly-s-guest-hoenig-again-advocated-military-20080735920.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">On the July 16 edition of Westwood
One's The Radio Factor with Bill
O'Reilly, guest Jonathan Hoenig --
regular panelist on Fox News' Cashin' In, managing
member of Capitalistpig Asset Management LLC, author, and financial commentator -- again advocated
military strikes against Iran in the context of discussing the U.S.
economy. While interviewing Hoenig, host Bill O'Reilly asserted that Americans can
be "[d]iscipline[d] to say we only have so many resources, let's use
them wisely, and sending $330 billion abroad is not a wise thing to do
geopolitically," to which Hoenig replied, "[I]f there's bad
guys out there, Bill, and you alluded to Iran and whatnot -- let's deal with
them militarily. You know, we didn't win -- win World War II by cutting
back on German sausages." O'Reilly said, "Now, look, come on.
Let's stay in the real world. You deal with them militarily, you're gonna have
to kill millions of people -- and I mean millions of people. That's
unacceptable. If we can strangle them economically, let's do so."
Hoenig responded, "[B]y that logic, we'd still have soldiers in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
right now," to which O'Reilly said: "No, that's not the
logic at all."

Later, Hoenig asserted: "[O]ur economy is going to be
killed by the conservation."

As Media
Matters for America has documented, Hoenig previously stated on the June 5, 2006, edition of
Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:
"[F]rankly, if you want to see the Dow go up, let's get the bombers in
the air and neutralize this Iranian threat. We've gone to the negotiating
table, we have danced around with these people" and "[t]hat's not
going to help this country nor the stock market." On June 19, 2006, Hoenig
suggested that the United States should attack North Korea in order to prevent
"a major sell-off on Wall Street." Hoenig asserted: "We should
take preventative action here and take out their capacity to threaten us. I
think that's when you are going to see this market take the North Korean threat
off the table. Right now, I'm scared that this could become a real threat and a
catalyst for a major sell-off on Wall Street." During the July 11, 2006,
edition of Your World, after
Cavuto asked Hoenig, "[W]hat happens if we were to strike North Korea's
nuclear-strike capability? ... Then what happens to the market?"
Hoenig responded, "I think the market
rises. I would love to see us launch a pre-emptive attack on North Korea."

From the July 16 broadcast of Westwood
One's The Radio Factor with Bill
O'Reilly:

O'REILLY:
Love convenience. There's a gas station, we pull in, put the noz in,
bang, we're ready to go. "On the road again" -- Willie
Nelson. So we like convenience. We love our cars. Therefore, if you mess with
that equation, you are not a popular person. You are not popular. All right,
now that is a truism. You can't argue with me on that. Over the years, we
have used more and more energy. Three percent of the world's population,
we use 25 percent of the world's fossil fuel. We are gluttons because we
love our cars and drive and drive and drive. And it's a big country. We
do a lot of commerce and all of that. OK. So we spend $330 billion on foreign
petroleum imports. We send $330 billion abroad every year.

Think
about it. That's money out of this country, out of our pockets and into
the pockets of bad guys like [Venezuelan President] Hugo Chavez, the Saudi
sheikhs, the Iranians -- before he was overthrown, Saddam Hussein -- all of
these people taking our money. And because all that money is leaving our
economy, our economy is weaker. If we'd kept the $330 billion here,
we'd have much higher wages and much more employment because
there'd be more money floating around the 50 states.

[...]

O'REILLY:
All right, the bottom line on President Bush is he's not a problem solver,
and this problem was apparent to many, many of us but, you know, everybody just
let it go for the reasons I stated. All right, let's bring in Jonathan
Hoenig of Capitalistpig Asset Management. Capitalistpig.com. Hey, at least
you're honest, Hoenig. You know what I'm talking about here?

HOENIG:
Hell, yes. Great to be with you, Bill.

O'REILLY:
He's coming to us on the Nextel Direct-Connect hotline. Am I making any
mistakes here?

HOENIG:
Ah, plenty of them, Bill. I think, to be honest --

O'REILLY:
All right.

HOENIG:
-- kind of like you blaming the oil speculators.

O'REILLY:
Right. I've --

HOENIG:
You're 100 percent wrong.

O'REILLY:
Of course. And -- and -- and the fact that all the airline chieftains are
blaming the speculators and Congress is going to pass laws against them really
don't matter, but go ahead.

HOENIG:
Well, Bill, what are you basically saying? I mean, are you saying that we
should conserve and consume less?

O'REILLY:
I am.

HOENIG:
Why?

O'REILLY:
Because --

HOENIGH:
Just to save money?

O'REILLY:
-- to make a cleaner planet, all right? Yeah -- less fossil fuel use is better
for the air. And if you use less and conserve you'll have more cash
yourself that you can spend and invest with you and your Capitalistpig
organization.

HOENIG:
Well, when you want to write an investment book or the president wants to write
an investment book, I guess I -- I'll buy that one, but I mean, Bill, the
only reason to conserve is to sacrifice. The whole philosophy of conservation
is sacrifice.

O'REILLY:
How about discipline?

HOENIG:
Discipline what? Discipline to live a less higher quality of life?

O'REILLY:
No. Discipline to say we only have so many resources, let's use them
wisely, and sending $330 billion abroad is not a wise thing to do geopolitically.

HOENIG:
Well, a couple of things going on here. For one thing is that if you -- if
there's bad guys out there, Bill, and you alluded to Iran and whatnot -- let's
deal with them militarily. You know, we didn't win -- win World War II --

O'REILLY:
Let's deal with --

HOENIG:
-- by cutting back on German sausages.

O'REILLY:
Now, look, come on. Let's stay in the real world. You deal with them --

HOENIG:
Yeah.

O'REILLY:
-- militarily, you're gonna have to kill millions of people -- and I mean
millions of people. That's unacceptable. If we can strangle them
economically --

HOENIG:
Yeah.

O'REILLY:
-- let's do so.

HOENIG:
And if -- by that, you know, by that logic, we'd still have soldiers in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
right now. Bill --

O'REILLY:
No, that's not the logic at all.

HOENIG:
Well, we are consuming less. I mean the president actually is onto something.
We're buy -- driving less --

O'REILLY:
Yeah, we're driving -- now we are.

HOENIG:
Well, well --

O'REILLY:
But he didn't take the leadership position until we were into a very
painful situation.

HOENIG:
Well, I don't think it's the role of the government, Bill, to tell
me how much to drive.

O'REILLY:
You don't think it's the role of the government to promote national
security? It's like -- we're being hurt.

HOENIG:
By -- by telling me to buy a smaller car?

O'REILLY:
Yeah.

HOENIG:
Well, I don't --

O'REILLY:
Yeah. I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why. Because our economy is
our security. And our economy now is damaged greatly by higher oil prices.

HOENIG:
Bill -- Bill, our economy is going to be killed by the conservation that you --
what has made America
great and so prosperous, Bill, is it self-sacrifice?

O'REILLY:
No, it's hard work. It's not gluttony --

HOENIG:
Yeah by --

O'REILLY:
No. It's not gluttony in an SUV.

HOENIG:
Well, you consider going to 7-Eleven and getting a Slurpee in an SUV to be
gluttony. I consider it to be the American -- the great American way of life.

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Geek Ink: Comics Fans Show Off Tattoos</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/geek-ink-comics-fans-show-off-tattoos-20080810624.htm"/>

All comic book fans dig ink. Some of them just take their superhero obsessions a little further than others.

Michael Boyce (left) wears his love of comics on his sleeves. A thirtysomething artist who runs On Comic Ground, a comics shop in San Diego, his arms are covered with tattoos of all the superheroines he grew up with: fightin' females like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl and Wonder Girl.

"Once I started getting one girl, I had to get 'em all," Boyce said.

With flesh forever marked with the comics and sci-fi characters they know and love, geeks like Boyce would give a pack of hard-core bikers a run for their money in the tattoo department.

Wonder Woman struts her stuff on Boyce's right bicep, but his tattoos cover both of his arms.

"I want to have arms that look like comic book pages with the girls bursting out," said Boyce, who got the work done over a three-year period by Willie King Clover in Lemon Grove, California. Boyce also wears a wicked Wonder Woman belt buckle.

When getting Venom's spider logo added to his left calf, Aaron Hamilton went with stark black ink.

"I wanted something big and bold that just said, 'This is who I am. This is what I like,'" said Hamilton, 30, of Birmingham, Alabama. He says he got the tattoo done 10 years ago by Justin Kontzen of Aerochild Tattoos in Birmingham.

Tim Burton's animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas got Coley Suicide into tattoos. Now it's Halloween every day of the year on her arm, where "Pumpkin King" Jack Skellington, his girlfriend Sally and ghost dog Zero have taken up permanent residence.

"I've always kinda been obsessed with Tim Burton," said Suicide, 20, of Long Beach, California. "I figured I'd start out with my favorite."

The tattoos took 28 hours, she said, and were done by Nathan Menske in Yakima, Washington.

Chaos Comics characters Lady Death and Purgatori face-off eternally on the back of Chris "Cybian" Kneeland, 39, of San Diego.

"Everything I have (tattoo-wise) is kind of like good and evil," said Kneeland, who works as a website coder and analyst.

The back piece, which was done by Bob Vessells at Funny Farm Tattoos in Los Angeles, was started five years ago, with 20 to 25 hours of needling so far, said Kneeland. He's gained some weight in the interim, and swears he'll get the piece finished when he drops the pounds.

Images of The Thing (pictured), Image Comics' Maxx and other superheroes decorate Sean Brunle's body. The 31-year-old bartender, who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, says he chose those characters because he "was physically attracted to them."

The tattoos, done by Rodney Raines at Ace Custom Tattoo in Charlotte, took 15 or 20 hours to finish, Brunle said.

: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com
X-Men badass Wolverine is another of Brunle's favorites.

"They're basically hard on the outside and soft on the inside," Brunle said of the characters indelibly inked on his arms. "Strong men with good hearts, I guess."

"Does it ever make sense to us?" asks Jeff Walker, 27, of San Diego. The custodian wears a stark image of a dead bird with a philosophical quote from Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes comic strip on his arm.

"I've just always loved the artwork," Walker said by way of explanation. The tattoo was inked by Chris Walkin at Avalon Tattoo II in San Diego.

Leona the lizard girl from Katherine Dunn's sideshow stunner Geek Love earned a permanent spot on one of Odette Suicide's legs, right next to a living shrine to the Virgin de Guacamole.

Suicide, 27, lives in Ventura, California, and calls herself a "baker with brains." She has a bachelor's degree in psychology (and neurons tattooed on her right arm).

Leona was inked in nine hours by Tim Kern at Tribulation Tattoo in New York City, she said. Nathan Kostechko did the avocado-faced Virgin.

Steve Thompson works as a toy designer for Disney, but Sci Fi Channel's rebooted space opera Battlestar Galactica motivated him to get this skin art. He has Starbuck's tattoo on his arm, courtesy of two hours under the needle at Body Electric Tattoo in Hollywood.

"I'm just a huge fan of the show," said Thompson, 34, of Los Angeles.

Shaz Nolan wears the Dark Mark of the Death Eaters from the Harry Potter books on her left forearm. That fits nicely with the 32-year-old seamstress' cosplay role -- she dresses as Bellatrix Lestrange.

When she saw the image, she couldn't live without it. "And it's fun," said Nolan, who lives in Fullerton, California. She says the tattoo took one hour at Deep Blue Tattoo in Grover Beach, California.

: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com
"I've been a comic book fan my entire life," said Chad Bacon, 34, of Huntington Beach, California.

It shows. On his right forearm, the strip-club manager sports Captain America, done by Vance O'Rourke of 723 Tattoo in Fullerton, California. Bacon's into the "whole patriotic thing," he said.

Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Wasp, Spider-Man and Spawn cover other parts of his body, and for extra geek effect, he's got an image of Albert Einstein on his upper left arm.

: Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com
Steven Miller has a bold panel from a comic on his right forearm. "I just thought it was cool looking," said Miller, 27, of Los Angeles.

The director of Automaton Transfusion said he is working on a movie called Ink about -- what else? -- tattoos.

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Are images of the early Mickey Mouse still copyrighted?</title>

<summary type="text/plain">The LA Times's Joseph Menn has a great, well-researched feature article on the history of the copyright for the image of Mickey Mouse as portrayed in the earliest Disney cartoons -- and the theory that Disney made mistakes early on with its copyright registration, placing images of that specific Mickey (not the Mickey we know today) in the public domain. Prominent legal scholars like Peter Jaszi agree, but who will shell out the millions in legal fees to prove it? After all, the company's already threatened legal action against law-students who publish papers investigating the question! Brown went searching for flawed formalities -- and found one. It was on the title card at the beginning of a "Steamboat Willie" cartoon that had just been rereleased on a 1993 LaserDisc honoring Mickey's 65th birthday. It said in full: "Disney Cartoons Present A Mickey Mouse Sound Cartoon Steamboat Willie A Walt Disney Comic By Ub Iwerks Recorded by Cinephone Powers System Copyright MCMXXIX." [...] The authoritative legal treatise "Nimmer on Copyright" says that a copyright is void if multiple names create uncertainty, and courts have agreed. In 1961, a federal judge in Massachusetts cited the "accompanied by" rule in throwing out a copyright claim by newspaper cartoonist Art Moger. Moger's name was included in the title above his panels, but the name of another artist ran inside the boxes. Disney's rights to young Mickey Mouse may be wrong (Thanks, Xeni!)...

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Fox &amp; Friends aired McCain's ad of Dems praising him, not DNC response with criticism from many of same Dems</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/fox-friends-aired-mccain-s-ad-of-dems-praising-him-2008087569.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">On August 8, Fox News' Fox &
Friends aired an August 5 Web ad from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign that
shows video of
Democrats praising McCain, but did
not air the Democratic
National Committee's
August 7 response, which contains clips of many of the same
Democrats criticizing McCain. Earlier, while teasing the segment, guest
co-host Dave Briggs stated: "[I]t's
88 days until the election. Are top Democrats pulling for McCain?"

By contrast, the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe aired both the McCain ad and the DNC's response, and the August 7 edition of MSNBC's Countdown aired clips from both ads.

From the August 8 edition of Fox News' Fox &amp; Friends:

BRIGGS: And it's 88 days until the election. Are
top Democrats pulling for McCain?

HOWARD DEAN (chairman of the Democratic
National Committee) [video clip]: I admire Senator McCain greatly, and he's one of the
people we modeled our campaign over
-- on,
because he is very direct,
very blunt.

BRIGGS: This new McCain ad -- Democrats
to stump for him, but how will it play with voters?

[...]

BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): Let's talk about
this brand-new ad from John McCain. You know he was a sometimes a darling of the Democrats. You
want proof? Watch.

[begin video clip]

FORMER SEN. TOM DASCHLE (D-SD): He can
work with Democrats on key issues, whether
it's campaign finance reform or tobacco policy, he's worked
with us.

SEN. JOE BIDEN (D-DE): Look, John McCain is a
personal friend, a great friend,
and I would be honored
to run with or against John McCain.

SEN. JOHN KERRY (D-MA): And I have enormous respect
for him. He is a courageous, patriotic American who stands up for what he
believes.

DEAN: I admire Senator McCain
greatly.

[end video clip]

KILMEADE: The best is Hillary
Clinton. The best is Hillary Clinton,
because she describes
her -- "This is me, I'm
really qualified, and John McCain's
really qualified, and Barack Obama --
he has a speech that he said once."

GERALDO RIVERA (host of Fox
News' Geraldo at Large):
Well, you know it's
--

KILMEADE: Well, actually here it is. Here, it's coming up. Listen to this.

[begin video clip]

OBAMA: -- begins with the proposal put forward by
Senator [Joe] Lieberman and Senator McCain.

CLINTON: I know Senator McCain has a
lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House, and Senator Obama has a speech he gave in
2002.

[end video clip]

KILMEADE: That's exactly how she
still feels today, Geraldo. I mean --

RIVERA: Well, putting that issue
aside, the fact of the
matter is, John McCain
is the most -- the strongest Republican
candidate you could possibly have in an election cycle where the Republicans
should have no right to even consider
a victory given the last seven and a half years, how difficult things have become
with the United States economy for example, the war in Iraq, and everything else.

From the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

JOE SCARBOROUGH (co-host): So anyway,
Willie.

WILLIE GEIST (co-host): We've got some more ad wars.

SCARBOROUGH:
These are great ads.

GEIST: These are good ads.

SCARBOROUGH:
On both sides.

GEIST: John McCain's gotten a lot of credit for being
funny, coming out with some good ads lately. Well, the Democratic leaders have come out with sort of dueling ads --
intentionally dueling. Here's one, the first praising John McCain. This
from the Democrats.

[begin video clip]

DASCHLE: He can work with Democrats
on key issues, whether it's
campaign finance reform or tobacco policy, he's worked with us.

BIDEN: Look, John McCain is a personal friend, a
great friend, and I would be honored to run
with or against John McCain.

JOHN KERRY: And I have enormous respect for him. He is a
courageous, patriotic American who stands up for what he believes.

DEAN: I admire Senator McCain greatly, and he's one of the
people we modeled our campaign over
-- on,
because he is very direct,
very blunt, and nobody
has to guess at what he's thinking.

SEN. RUSS FEINGOLD (D-WI): You know, I love John McCain. He's a great
guy.

OBAMA: Since coming to Washington, I have
believed that the right approach
begins with the proposal put forward by Senator Lieberman and Senator McCain.

CLINTON: I know Senator McCain has a lifetime
of experience that he will bring to the White House, and Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.

[end video clip]

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (co-host): Oh, OK. They all
love him.

GEIST: So that's -- that was paid for by the John McCain campaign.

SCARBOROUGH: That was
the first one.

BRZEINSKI: That's good. They all love him.

GEIST: Democrats in their own words, supporting John McCain.

BRZEZINSKI: They love him.

GEIST: Who is that good for, Harold?

HAROLD FORD (NBC News analyst): Well, if you're just watching
that, you would have to
think it's good for John McCain --

BRZEZINSKI: Yeah.

FORD: -- if you don't -- if you wait -- if you don't catch the
end of it. But you can find John McCain saying as many nice things about
Democrats. He has
praised Hillary Clinton. He has praised the wonderful [Sen.] Ted Kennedy [D-MA], who we -- our prayers continue to go out to. He
has praised Tom Daschle before.

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah.

FORD: So you could probably find a
slew of things he's done as well,
and I've got a funny
feeling you just might hear that from the campaign at some point.

SCARBOROUGH: Willie,
lets here the other side.

GEIST: All right. Let's check out
the DNC. Is John McCain a maverick? Here's what the DNC says.

[begin video clip]

BIDEN: Stylistically and
substantively, there is no daylight between George Bush and John McCain. They
are joined at the hip.

KERRY: John McCain has changed in
profound and fundamental ways that I find personally really surprising and,
frankly, upsetting. He is not the John McCain as the senator who defined himself, quote, as a
maverick, though questionable. This is a different John McCain.

DASCHLE: On Iraq, on the
economy, on tax policy, on domestic policy, across the board, he is espousing
the Bush policies. He's
changed a lot since 2001.

CLINTON: But in the end, after eight
devastating years under President Bush, Senator McCain is simply offering four
years more.

DEAN: You know, the John McCain of 2000 wouldn't vote for this John McCain. We've got -- we don't
need another four years of George Bush. What he's proposing is four more years
of George Bush's economic policy.
And it's
ridiculous, and
it's unfair to the American people.

BUSH: It's been my honor to
welcome my friend John McCain as the nominee of the Republican Party. I wish
you all the best. I'm proud to be your friend.

[end video clip]

GEIST: Harold, you predicted --

BRZEZINSKI: OK.

GEIST: -- a quick response from the
DNC. Same music, same look, the whole thing. Now you've seen both of them.

FORD: One thing here.

GEIST: Who wins that?

FORD: Two things. One thing
you've got to admire about it,
and it's
been said on this show about Obama.
They respond very
quickly --

BRZEZINSKI: They do.

FORD: -- and they do it forcefully,
one. Two, John McCain has changed, and that ad got to some of the surface of it. But they're going to have to dig a little deeper and talk
about what that change is.
Because I agree with
Joe. On the surface, this thing -- I
mean, it has probably a little -- McCain's ad is a strong ad. Whenever
you have five or six leading Democrats making that kind of case, it's a positive thing
for you.

SCARBOROUGH: And of
course, Harold, you
expect people from the opposite party to attack the other party's nominee. So
that's not a big surprise. You don't expect [unintelligible]

FORD: But there is a little substance to this. I
think people who --
Democrats in the House
and the Senate who like John McCain, liked him
for -- he was principled on, they believed, on campaign reform, on tobacco legislation, it's been said before.
They agreed with him on tax --

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah.

FORD: -- legislation. Then he shifted all of those positions during the course of this campaign. So all of
that will come out, and the context has got to be put into some of these ads. But I admire the way the Obama people are able
to respond quickly.

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah. Give
the Obama people an A for responding that quickly. I think -- probably, advantage goes to McCain there. But I think it's a tossup.

From the August 7 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

KEITH OLBERMANN (host): The McCain
campaign today released a Web
ad with the testimonials of Democrats attesting to his maverick-atude. Problem: Only one of the testimonials was less than two years old. Our fourth story on the Countdown. Second problem: The
DNC promptly followed with its own Web
ad with the testimonials of all the same Democrats attesting to how McCain has since betrayed his
principles for the sake of the campaign.

<td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Mediamatters.Org</span> - On August 8, Fox News' Fox &
Friends aired an August 5 Web ad from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign that
shows video of
Democrats praising McCain, but did
not air the Democratic
National Committee's
August 7 response, which contains clips of many of the same
Democrats criticizing McCain. Earlier, while teasing the segment, guest
co-host Dave Briggs stated: "[I]t's
88 days until the election. Are top Democrats pulling for McCain?"

By contrast, the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe aired both the McCain ad and the DNC's response, and the August 7 edition of MSNBC's Countdown aired clips from both ads.

From the August 8 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends:
