<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Night Vision: night photos of urban ruins from the creator of Lost America</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/night-vision-night-photos-of-urban-ruins-from-the-20080880916.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain"> Troy Paiva's Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration is a stunning collection of "light-painted" night photography from a variety of modern ruins: ghost towns, abandoned mass-transit stations, an airplane graveyard and others. Paiva places dramatic colored lights in the scene to bring out its essential spookiness, something that is often missing from photos of glorious old ruins. The book includes an intro from BLDGBLOG's Geoff Manaugh and copious notes on the different sites ("TOADS" -- temporary, obsolete, abandoned and derelict spaces) that Paiva and his fellow urban explorers visited (Paiva also includes colorful, curmudgeonly grumps about the damned film location and set people who sex up his ruins by adding extra graffiti and so on). You can see more of Paiva's work on his site, Lost America, which chronicles his serious nighttime infiltration habit. The pictures in Night Visions look great, and this Friday, August 1, Chronicle Books is throwing a party to celebrate the its release in San Francisco at the 111 Minna Gallery from 7 to 9 pm. Here's a gallery of images from the book. Here's what I posted about it on Telstar Logistics. Night Visions: The Art of Urban Exploration...

<title>{AUTOS &gt; MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Stoners, Like, Totally Solve Nation's Air Travel Problems</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/recreation/autos/magazines-and-e_zines/stoners-like-totally-solve-nation-s-air-travel-problems-2008075602.htm"/>

Air travel is a total hassle, man, and marijuana advocates in Denver say everyone would find the normally excruciating process a lot more pleasant if they could enjoy a few bong hits before boarding. It might even help solve a few of the problems that airlines have been experiencing lately. The way they see it, if people can knock a few back before a flight, they should be able to spark one up. They're calling on airports nationwide to install marijuana lounges.

"All we're saying is, in light of the fact drunk and disorderly incidents on airplanes are becoming more common, it really makes sense to allow adults the choice to use marijuana," says Mason Tvert, executive director of Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, the organization calling for the lounges. "There's no rational reason our government would allow people to use alcohol and not use marijuana."

Well, except for the fact the feds classify marijuana a Schedule 1 drug, putting it alongside heroin, mescaline meth and acid on its list of Drugs That Definitely Are Evil.
Tvert says many travelers consider flying stressful, so they'll have a drink - or two, or three, or... - before boarding. That can lead to problems, such as the case last week where a JetBlue passenger allegedly lit up a cigarette and socked a flight attendant.  She blamed the crew for serving her three vodkas. U.S Attorney Troy Eid told the Rocky Mountain News the feds are seeing a record number of passengers - often drunk - misbehaving on airplanes. "I think sometimes people think this is a joke," he says. "They think it's funny. And they're going to find out otherwise as we do more and more of these cases."

SAFER says giving people the option of smoking a joint before their flights would relax them without making them unruly. But don't expect the feds or the airports to go along with the idea. Chuck Cannon, a spokesman for Denver International Airport, told the Denver Post he doesn't foresee marijuana smoking in the airport. "Marijuana is illegal isn't it?," he says. "All the bars and
restaurants are concessions and they sell what they sell. I do not know
that we are going to tell them what they can sell. Alcohol is legal and
tobacco is legal and marijuana is not."

Tvert said he doesn't have a problem with alcohol being sold
in airports -- although some people do, and say it should be banned -- but says people should have another option. "It is irrational and potentially dangerous policy to continue allowing
passengers to get drunk before and during flights while prohibiting
them from simply making the safer choice to use marijuana prior to
boarding," Tvert says.

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Hume falsely claimed Obama "contradicted what he wrote in his book" about town hall meetings </title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/hume-falsely-claimed-obama-contradicted-what-he-20080657830.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">During the June 25 edition of Fox News' Special Report, host Brit Hume stated:
"When [Sen.] Barack Obama declined to join [Sen.] John McCain's
invitation to appear at a series of joint town hall meetings, he not only went
back on an earlier indication that he would do that ... he also
contradicted what he wrote in his book." Hume then quoted from
Obama's book The Audacity of Hope:
" 'One of my favorite tasks of being a senator is hosting town hall
meetings. I held 39 of them in my first year in the Senate.' Obama said
they are like, quote, 'A dip in a cool stream. I feel cleansed afterward,
glad for the work I have chosen.' " Earlier in the show, Hume had
teased his report by claiming that Obama has "changing positions"
on town hall meetings.

In fact, in the passage Hume quoted from the book, Obama was not referring to appearances
with his political opponents, as Hume suggested. Rather, he wrote:

One of my favorite tasks of being a
senator is hosting town hall meetings. I held thirty-nine of them my first year
in the Senate, all across Illinois, in tiny rural towns like Anna and
prosperous suburbs like Naperville, in black churches on the South Side and a
college in Rock Island. There's not a lot of fanfare involved. My staff
will call up the local high school, library, or community college to see if
they're willing to host the event. A week or so in advance, we advertise
in the town newspaper, in church bulletins, and on the local radio station. On
the day of the meeting I'll show up a half hour early to chat with town
leaders and we'll discuss local issues, perhaps a road in need of
repaving or plans for a new senior center. After taking a few photographs, we
enter the hall where the crowd is waiting. I shake hands on my way to the
stage, which is usually bare except for a podium, a microphone, a bottle of
water, and an American flag posted in its stand. And then for the next hour or
so, I answer to the people who sent me to Washington.

Attendance varies at these meetings:
We've had as few as fifty people turn out, as many as two thousand. But
however many people show up, I am grateful to see them. They are a
cross-section of the counties we visit: Republican and Democrat, old and young,
fat and skinny, truck drivers, college professors, stay-at-home moms, veterans,
schoolteachers, insurance agents, CPAs, secretaries, doctors, and social
workers. They are generally polite and attentive, even when they disagree with
me (or one another). They ask me about prescription drugs, the deficit, human
rights in Myanmar,
ethanol, bird flu, school funding, and the space program. Often they will
surprise me: A young flaxen-haired woman in the middle of farm country will
deliver a passionate plea for intervention in Darfur,
or an elderly black gentleman in an inner city neighborhood will quiz me on
soil conservation.

As I look out over the crowd, I
somehow feel encouraged. In their bearing I see hard work. In the way they
handle their children I see hope. My time with them is like a dip in a cool
stream. I feel cleansed afterward, glad for the work I have chosen. (Page 101)

According to
washingtonpost.com's Campaign Tracker, Obama has hosted at least 18 town hall

From the June 25 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume:

HUME: A little later on "The

the election, but what has he said in the past?
