China Ressurects The Quintessential British Sports Car ^{{new window}}

Blog.Wired.Com - They've cleared away the cobwebs and fired up the machinery at the venerable Longbridge factory in Birmingham, England, where MG roadsters are once again rolling off an assembly line. Although the MG TF remains quintessentially British and looks pretty much like it did when the company went belly-up three years go, it is now half Chinese. The 1.8 liter engine and drivetrain are built in China and shipped to Longbridge for final assembly. Still, it's a sweet little package based on what was one of Europe's best-selling sports cars of the 1990s and there's a waiting list to get one. The first run will be limited to 500 special edition cars dubbed the TF LE500, and 70 percent of them are spoken for. "Existing MG owners, our huge band of enthusiasts and fans of the authentic sports car driving experience have looked forward to this day for a long time," says Gary Hagan, the company's director of marketing. Three years, to be exact. About 180 people work at the Longbridge factory, which Herbert Austin - who could be called the Henry Ford of the British auto industry - opened in 1905. Over the years it produced the iconic Mini along with the Metro and Rover 200, and it employed 6,000 people when MG Rover went bankrupt three years ago. Nanjing Automotive Co. bought the place a couple of months later for about $103 million. Nanjing, which was taken over by Shanghai Automotive, always planned to bring back the TF but the project was plagued by delays. "We have all worked extremely hard to meet our commitment to commence production of the MG TF in August," says MG spokeswoman Eleanor De La Haye. "We are delighted to have reached this important point and are looking forward to seeing the cars in showrooms shortly." The LE500 features some styling tweaks, leather interior, antilock brakes, a top-end stereo and other gee-gaws and a $32,000 price tag. Production of the standard model will begin later this year, and the cars will be sold only in Britain. Plans to bring MG back to America for the first time since 1980 apparently fell apart. Too bad.
