Just stole this from our P.R. department, hehehe. Feel free to take and adapt for your own use.***The Munsters TV Show Celebrates 40 Years TV?s The Munsters celebrate 40 years at 1313 Mockingbird Lane this September with the introduction of the first-everHalloween village with The Munsters theme and a model of Grandpa Munster?s "Dragula" dragster.Niles, Illinois August 31, 2004? The Munsters, America?s most frighteningly funny family, have continued to attract some of the most loyal television program fans over the past 40 years, a pretty impressive feat considering the show only ran for 38 episodes. Similar to the characters on The Munsters, these fans aren?t your normal fans who are satisfied merely watching the syndicated programs on television. Oleg Krylov who grew up with The Munsters says, "We Munsters fans are nearly as wacky as the characters themselves". The term enthusiastic is an understatement for The Munsters fans, some of whom have even gone to the great lengths of building homes that are exact replicas of the Munsters house as well as cars that look exactly like the Grandpa?s coffin shaped "Dragula" dragster.Fans celebrate The Munsters 40th year at 1313 Mockingbird Lane this September, with the introduction of the first ever, The Munsters Halloween collectible village. Authorized by Universal Studios and available only from Hawthorne Village, this new Munsters collectible is one of the most anticipated items for avid Munster fans everywhere. Friends will be as green as Herman when they catch a glimpse of The Munsters Halloween Village that features character figurines, spooky sound effects, and eerie glowing lights. Free highly collectible character figurines of Herman, Lily, Grandpa and Eddie, are included along with a 6- piece jack-o?-lantern lamplight set, a $65.00 value. Not all of The Munsters fans have room for a life-size version of Grandpa?s "Dragula" dragster, the ghoulish car designed by George Barris. However they can still show their loyalty with an Ertl die-cast collectible version by Hamilton Authenticated. The 1:18 scale model features a "coffin" body on a tube chassis, radiator, tombstone grille, bat-shaped forced air scoops, and metal organ exhaust pipes just like those on Grandpa?s original "Dragula" dragster.Exclusivity only increases the desirability and potential value of The Munsters collectibles. The first-ever, limited edition The Munsters Halloween Village mentioned here is a exclusive acquisition of collectiblestoday.com and its affiliates, the leading international provider for limited-edition collectibles, through an exclusive arrangement and officially authorized by Universal Studios. The Munsters collectible village,Grandpa?s "Dragula" dragster and more movie and TV -themed collectibles are available at Collectibles Today, The Bradford Exchange?s online marketing arm.Collectibles Today is the premier Internet shopping site for unique, quality collectibles and giftware from the finest companies worldwide, offering collecting expertise, excellence and excitement for collectors as they pursue their passion for collecting.
Matt sez, "One of my favorite writers, Caitlin R. Kiernan, was the subject of verbal abuse, profanity and homophobic remarks from some sort of security guard when she and her companion went to visit H.P. Lovecraft's grave. The guard attempted to make them delete all of the photographs they had taken, despite the absence of any policy forbidding it. Are cameras like catnip for abusive, power-mad rent-a-cops now?" Basic story: Caitlin and her friend have been visiting the grave for a decade or so, paying respects quietly, as do many people. It's one of the most photographed stones in the world. The graveyard's policies, listed on its website, do not prohibit photos. The security was incredibly abusive and jerky. Just another skirmish in the war against photography, as the brave security guards of the world prevent the theft of photons from our poor, helpless inanimate objects. As Spooky was getting into the car, I finally looked him in the eye and said the only thing I said during the entire encounter (which elapsed over the space of maybe three or four minutes, start to finish, at the most). I pointed a finger at the man and, very quietly, I said, "You will be reported." He screamed, "You do that, you piece of shit!." This is the only time I got a clear look at the man. He was white, late middle-aged, seemed to have about three-days worth of beard (salt and pepper), and spoke with a heavy regional accent (don't ask which one). I am fairly certain that he had been drinking, and he may have been intoxicated. He certainly acted like a belligerent drunkard. "...stains on the carpet and stains on the scenery..." (Thanks, Matt!)
A quick reminder that there are still some tickets left for Thursday's benefit gig in NYC with DJ Spooky, all proceeds to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund: On August 21, Cory Doctorow, award-winning author and co-editor of the popular blog Boing Boing and experimental writer / artist / musician Paul Miller, a.k.a. D.J. Spooky That Subliminal Kid team up for a multimedia speaking event benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Following their respective presentations, Doctorow and DJ Spooky will take the stage together for an open forum discussion about their work and the futurepresent each eloquently addresses across different media. Cory Doctorow will read and discuss the issues behind his bestselling young adult novel, Little Brother. Addressing internet and government security, censorship, and civil liberties in a post-9/11 near-future atmosphere, Little Brother tackles timely issues while telling a story that's smart, funny, and jam-packed-with-pop culture nuggets. Doctorow "hopes it'll inspire you to use technology to make yourself more free." Doctorow is the former European Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group that works to keep cyberspace free. IDW recently published Cory Doctorow's Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now a collection of comics based on his cyberpunkiest Sci-fi short stories. DJ Spooky joins Doctorow to present concepts from Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture, his new book / literary mixtape collecting writing by artists and thinkers including Brian Eno, Jonathan Lethem, Saul Williams, Steve Reich, Moby, Chuck D, and more.
Back in May, we had to cancel a planned benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in NYC due to illness striking one of the organizers. I promised then that I'd be rescheduling it for some time in August and now, here it is! I'm really proud to have the chance to serve the CBLDF, which is a model for how an imaginative, vibrant civil liberties organization operates. They raise money to bail out comic creators and sellers (and others in the trade) who face legal persecution for making comic books. Even better: this event includes DJ Spooky, whom I've wanted to meet since I wrote the intro to his new collection of essays on music, and afterwards, Spooky's spinning a small-venue set, also to benefit the CBLDF. I really hope to see you there -- I'm coming into New York a day early (I'm on my way to 3Pi Con in Springfield, Mass, where I'm one of the guests of honor, along with Randall "XKCD" Munroe) and spending a bunch of dough out of pocket just to have the chance to do this for CBLDF. Tickets are limited -- act now! On August 21, Cory Doctorow, award-winning author and co-editor of the popular blog Boing Boing and experimental writer / artist / musician Paul Miller, a.k.a. Cory Doctorow Meets DJ Spooky: A CBLDF Benefit Mashup!...

Todd Lappin says: Photographer Troy Paiva has a new book out, and it's chock full of superb nighttime photos taken at abandoned military bases, aircraft boneyards, auto junkyards, and other wonderfully desolate places. Troy's book is called Night Visions: The Art of Urban Exploration, and it makes heavy use of his favorite photo technique: Iong-exposure nighttime shots that uses only natural moonlight and simple flashlights to capture ruined night scenes in spooky detail. The pictures in Night Visions look great, and this Friday, August 1, Chronicle Books is throwing a party to celebrate the its release in San Francisco at the 111 Minna Gallery from 7 to 9 pm. Here's a gallery of images from the book. Here's what I posted about it on Telstar Logistics. Night Visions: The Art of Urban Exploration...

Neal Stephenson's forthcoming novel Anathem was inspired by the amazing Clock of the Long Now, a project to make a clock that runs for 10,000 years. The Long Now foundation is helping to launch the book with a signing in September in San Francisco, and its esteemed board members have been weighing in on the book: ??I suffer from attention surplus disorder,? jokes a character in Anathem. Attention surplus is exactly what Stephenson teaches his readers, in a book so tightly crafted it rewards instant rereading.? - Stewart Brand ?It is a great story, set in an alternative reality where people take long-term thinking seriously.? - Danny Hillis ?Long Now?s 10,000-year clock inspired Neal Stephenson?s new story, Anathem, and now Anathem is inspiring the Long Now. In ten centuries, no one will be sure which came first.? - Kevin Kelly Link See also: Ask Neal Stephenson questions about Anathem Spooky, wonderful music CD in Neal Stephenson's new novel Long Now clock souvenir Unveiling of second Long Now clock in Bay Area: photos...

Beautiful large room in Walnut Ave. Victorian.
Rent: $800 including utilities (and monthy house cleaner)
Deposit:$800
Available: Now but very negotiable to the right person.
If you are still interested please read more. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi there house hunters. We are offering a large room in our downtown Walnut Ave. Victorian. I'm going to try to be very specific to avoid long drawn out interviews with people that are not appropriate or we're not appropriate for. Please don't take this as nitpicky. We're just trying to make it easier on everyone.

The House:

Large Victorian under all the trees on Walnut. This really is the best street in town.

The room is about 13x13 with a large window and a huge closet. It is in the back of the house on the second floor. Everything is brand new. Really, brand spanking new. New paint, new carpet, new walls. The closet is even new. The room comes with a spooky story. The room had a very small closet but when we were renovating we found a 6'x'6 walled in room. I like to tell people that we found bones in there and all the inside walls were shredded with scratch marks but that's not true. No one else sleeps on the second floor. There's a brand new bathroom that is almost private in the sense that it's not anyone elses primary bathroom. We just finished the renovation on that bathroom and everyone says is like pooping in a magazine. Not like pooping into a magazine but like a Towne and Country or Old Home Journal photo pictorial. There are two other bedrooms upstairs. One is a shared room with the (possibly you) upstairs roommate, it will have a couch and a tv and will be used as my boyfriend's office. But say if you brought home a romantic interest and wanted to watch a movie you could do that up there. Or if you like to watch Anime movies you could do that and not hear me talk about how they drive me nuts. Why don't they ever draw lips on those people?! You'll have your own apartment sized fridge in the kitchen and plenty of shelf space. The rent covers water, garbage, PG&E, wireless internet, washer dryer, gardner and a house cleaner coming once a month to clean common areas.

About Us:

We're a couple in our 30's. We bought the house last year and have spent the past year fixing it up. We are both busy people but value our home and like to have a quiet comfortable space to live in. We don't usually play loud music but we tend to have have some back ground music playing (I'll get into genres later). WE have subdued bbq parties every few months. I cook dinner most nights of the week and read books while listening to hillbilly music. We have two cats. We love our cats. They are indoor cats. One is very fat and a little snarky but will leave you alone. The other is very sweet but doesn't really pester you for affection or drool like some cats do. There's on street parking but you'll have to buy a permit. I'm a counselor that works with teenage drug addicts, he owns a tattoo shop. He works on the house a lot and listens to screeching thrash or doom metal. I do the laundry on Saturdays and will be a student. I listen to awful high energy spanish speaking music as I'm obsessed with Zumba. I wear ugly work out clothes and am often sweaty.

Who we'd like to rent to:

Ideally we want someone who is independant, busy, socialable and kind. I do a lot of cooking. So, I'd like someone who isn't going to be in the kitchen a ton. We want someone who has their own life and isn't looking for best friends in housemates but is still easy to interact with. Someone who values a clean house but who is not anal. We both are heavy sleepers. So, coming home late is fine as long as you don't bring the party with you. We only want to rent to one person. We cannot have more pets. Our fat cat will kill them and we have new carpet and don't want more blood stains. Someone who drinks periodically is fine but absolutely no drugs in the house. I don't care if you smoke marijuana recreationally with your friends but never at home. Plus, I would rather talk to someone smacked out or on speed than to some uberstoner. They are just annoying. We would like someone who can pay their rent on time with no discussion. This house would be perfect for a UCSC student (maybe a grad student) as there is a bus stop two yards from the front door that goes directly to UCSC. The house is pretty well furnished so if you have a bunch of stuff that wouldn't be good. There isn't much storage other than your large closet. We'd prefer someone who likes babies. Not necessarily because we have any but because anyone who says they actively hate babies is kind of a douche bag and is probably part of that vampire club that meets downtown once a month and pretends to kill people. I don't want to live with any of those. Also, I don't like to hear about burning man. I know it's an art thing and used to be awesome but everyone I know who's gotten into that has turned weird and somehow unhygenic looking and tends to get mushy boundaries about sexual conduct in public. Someone with good communication skills. I don't want to have to guess if you're upset about something or deal with conflict resolution at home. We're both adults who genuinely like people and want to be accomodating. If you ask for something we'll probably make changes for it. I'm a counselor for my day job and my boyfriend is very mild mannered and has to talk about his emotions enough with me we don't need to subject him to more.

Please include some info about yourself in your response. I will call back the people I think would work. All others I will send an email to. I wish you well in your search. Thanks. There will be photos up later. Move in date is negotiable.
Oh, Oops. I must add one more very important thing. If you have a fear of clowns or even a slight aversion this house wouldn't be good for you. My brother is a professional clown who comes to visit about twice a year and stays around 10 days. He stays in the guest bedroom next door to your room and will come and go as a clown. He is very nice and funny but he often makes loud honking noises with his mouth and gets upset if people say mean things about clowns or talk about the movie "It". He feels that that movie is "racist against clowns". A bonus of moving in though is that he can make anything you ask for out of balloons. Really, he's never been stumped. He's been a clown since he was 6 and I've never seen him not be able to make something out of balloons. Start thinking about what kind of balloon sculpture you want...
