<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Squid beaks and materials science</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/squid-beaks-and-materials-science-20080928714.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Clive Thompson's got a fascinating rumination on what a revelation about the composition of the Humboldt squid's razor-sharp beak means for materials science: There are many weird things about the giant Humboldt squid, but here?s one of the strangest: Its beak. The squid?s beak is one of the hardest organic substances in existence ? such that the sharp point can slice through a fish or whale like a Ginsu knife. Yet the beak is attached to squid flesh that itself is the texture of jello. How precisely does a gelatinous animal safely wield such a razor-sharp weapon? Why doesn?t it just sort of, y?know, rip off? It?s as if you tried to carve a roast with a knife that doesn?t have a handle: It would cut into your fingers as much as the roast. This question has haunted many a marine biologist. So recently a team of materials scientists at the University of California decided to carefully examine the physical properties of the beak. Their discovery? The beak contains a huge gradation of stiffness: The tip of the beak is 100 times more rigid than the base of the beak ? so the base can blend easily with the surrounding flesh. Water is the key to the proper functioning of this gradient: If the beak is dried out, the soft base calcifies until it?s nearly as dense and rigid as the peak. (You can read their paper ? ?The Transition from Stiff to Compliant Materials in Squid Beaks? in PDF format here.) Now the scientists are trying to figure out how to artificially replicate this remarkable gradient, because it?s so radically different from the way we humans traditionally develop materials. We know how to create materials that are really stiff or really soft, but not ones that slide gradually from one to the other extreme. The Humboldt squid beak: Diamond-sharp mystery of the briny deep...

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - What Your Boss Can Learn From Birds and Bees</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/what-your-boss-can-learn-from-birds-and-bees-2008094366.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

Are you smarter than a goose? Sure you are &mdash; one on one. But when it comes to working efficiently, you and your colleagues can't touch the gaggle. According to author Ken Thompson, geese and other animals that naturally form groups have a lot to teach us about business. In a theory he calls organizational biomimetics, Thompson lays out the principles underlying nature's management strategies. So what can you learn from a bird or an ant? Take a gander.

Ants and Bees

Ants use pheromones to transmit messages about predators. Bees wiggle around to tell their comrades the location of food supplies. Thompson says people, too, could benefit from broadcasting more whole-group communications. While mass emails may seem annoying, one-way bulletins can actually increase group efficiency by giving everyone access to information and letting them decide how best to act on it.

Geese

When geese fly in a V, the birds rotate in and out of the lead position. This is both to conserve energy and, according to Thompson, because no single bird has memorized the whole route. Collective leadership is the norm in much of the animal world, he says, though rare for humans. In the context of business, groups with rotating leaders possess greater initiative, resilience, and agility than those led by one executive.

Worms

The brain of the tiny C. elegans worm has a mere 302 neurons. It doesn't need any more, because some of those neurons have an exceptional number of interconnectors. Translate this to the workplace: If an issue arises, the best-connected group members can serve as guides and help the team avoid bottlenecking at the top. These "hub" people can also quickly fine-tune strategy when new information comes in.

supported the proposal to build a bridge
between Ketchikan, Alaska, and Gravina Island and suggested that Alaska's
congressional delegation should continue to try to procure funding for the

package," focus group participants were told about Palin's prior
support for the bridge.

After reportedly expressing support for
the bridge in a September 21, 2007, press release,
Palin specifically cited the unwillingness of Congress to provide sufficient
funds for the project -- "[d]espite the work of our congressional
delegation" -- in explaining why she had "directed the Department of
Transportation and Public Facilities to look for the most fiscally responsible
alternative for access to the Ketchikan airport and Gravina Island instead of
proceeding any further with the proposed $398 million
bridge":

"Ketchikan desires a better
way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,"
said Governor Palin. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we
are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's
clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge
between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,"
Governor Palin added. "Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based
on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we
can do, rather than fight over what has happened."

From the September 2 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:

O'REILLY: "Impact" segment tonight: The prime-time
speakers here at the convention this evening are former Senator Fred Thompson,
current Senator Joseph Lieberman, and President Bush will be speaking by
satellite. But what everybody continues to talk about, obviously, is Sarah
Palin. With us now, Dr. Frank Luntz, who has done
some research among Independent voters on the governor. All right, set us up.
They make the announcement last week. And then what did you do?

LUNTZ:
I've had the opportunity to have several conversations with groups of
Independents here in Minneapolis.
And it is fascinating to watch them react as they learn more and more about
her. The first step is her background.

O'REILLY:
Now, do you show them tape?

LUNTZ:
We show them tape. We even show them the ad that Senator Obama ran against her right when she was selected. And they discuss it.

O'REILLY:
Right.

LUNTZ:
And the first aspect of that discussion is her background. And that's where she
seems to fall a little bit short. Voters look at that she was mayor. And they
see that she was governor. And they don't think that that holds a candle to Joe
Biden. And as the discussion goes on, they start to turn negative until they
hear about her stopping a bridge to nowhere. They hear about her challenging a sitting governor, defeating him. Having an 80 percent job approval rating because
she takes on the power. What they're looking for in a vice president is that
same kind of maverick zeal that John McCain has.

O'REILLY:
These are the independents.

LUNTZ:
These are the independents, but these are the undecided voters, the floating
voters.

O'REILLY:
Right.

LUNTZ:
And it's only about 12 percent of the country.

O'REILLY:
Right.

LUNTZ:
They're the ones who are going to make up the decision. They're going to make
up who wins this election.

O'REILLY:
No doubt. So you present the full package to them about -- but you roll it out.

LUNTZ:
Right.

O'REILLY:
You know, they can't absorb it all at once. So you start with here she is,
this, that and the other. So it starts negative -- like do you that time line
thing on the chart. So it starts kind of negative and then it builds as soon as
the reformer comes in, the corrupt -- fighting the corruption and all of
that.

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Whitaker misidentified Lieberman as a "leading Democrat"</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/whitaker-misidentified-lieberman-as-a-leading-2008091285.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Discussing Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-CT) scheduled
appearance at the Republican National Convention during the September 2 edition
of MSNBC Live, NBC News Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker misidentified Lieberman as
a "leading Democrat." NBC News foreign affairs correspondent Andrea
Mitchell also called Lieberman a "pariah in his own party." In
fact, after losing the 2006 Connecticut Democratic primary to challenger Ned
Lamont, Lieberman re-launched
his Senate campaign as an independent in August 2006 and went on to defeat
Lamont in the general election. On January 12, 2007, Congressional Quarterly reported
that "Lieberman has asked to be called an Independent Democrat," and
that "if the compound modifier that the senator prefers was not going to
take hold, then Lieberman's second choice is to be described as an Independent."

Media Matters for America has previously documented other
instances in which media figures and news outlets falsely referred to Lieberman
as a Democrat.

From the 1 p.m. ET hour of the September 2 edition of MSNBC Live:

WHITAKER: Well, we just got out of a briefing with top
McCain people going through the schedule tonight, and what we're going to see
is, first, George Bush coming remote from the White House, introduced by the first lady, and then followed by [former Sen.] Fred Thompson [TN] and Joe Lieberman,
who are essentially going to tell the country why John McCain is not George
Bush.

MITCHELL: And Joe Lieberman is a double-edged sword because his very
presence here, first of all, historic -- Joe Lieberman never
before addressed a Republican convention and now pretty much a pariah in his
own party -- but it's a
constant reminder just seeing him up here how close he came to being the vice-presidential pick.

WHITAKER: On the one hand, it's an
extraordinary moment. I mean, the idea of a leading Democrat as well-known as
Joe Lieberman, who was the vice-presidential candidate in 2000, now coming out to vouch for
the Republican nominee, and someone who knows him so well. But as you say, we
now know that until basically 10
days ago, John McCain really wanted Lieberman
to be his vice president, and that, again, keeps alive this story of how quickly
did they shift to Governor Palin? How well was she vetted?
