<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Media bury, ignore Leach speech at Democratic National Convention</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/media-bury-ignore-leach-speech-at-democratic-national-20080842625.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">As Washington Monthly
blogger Steve Benen has noted, several
media outlets have ignored or buried the
August 25 speech by former Rep. Jim Leach, an Iowa Republican, at the Democratic National Convention in which
Leach endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president. Indeed, ABC, CBS, and NBC did
not air any of Leach's speech,
which took place during the networks' hour of live coverage of the
convention. Further, MSNBC aired only seconds of the speech while
Hardball host Chris Matthews
talked over him.
Similarly, while Fox News noted Leach was speaking, Special Report host Brit Hume spoke over Leach and also aired only seconds
of Leach's speech without interruption.

Additionally, during an August 26 washingtonpost.com discussion, a
participant asked Washington Post
media critic Howard Kurtz why Leach's speech was "buried deep in
[staff writer] Jonathan Weisman's [Washington
Post] story this morning, without even a sidebar of its own."
Kurtz replied: "Mainly because it wasn't one of the speeches featured on
television. Zell Miller was the keynote speaker at the GOP." Kurtz did
not elaborate on his apparent assertion
that the Post chose not to give
greater attention or prominence to the Leach speech "[m]ainly" because the networks decided not
to "feature[]" it.

From the August 26 washingtonpost.com online discussion:

Chesapeake Beach, Md.: It was a big deal four years ago when barely-a-Democrat
Zell Miller blasted the Democrats from the podium at the GOP convention. Last night
a well-respected Republican -- former Rep. Jim Leach, did a similar (though
more soft-spoken) number on the GOP. Why was one notable, and the other buried
deep in Jonathan Weisman's story this morning, without even a sidebar of its
own?

washingtonpost.com: Obama's Family Night Out
(Post, Aug. 26)

Howard Kurtz: Mainly
because it wasn't one of the speeches featured on television. Zell Miller was
the keynote speaker at the GOP.

From the 10 p.m. ET hour of MSNBC's
convention coverage:

MATTHEWS: Former Congressman Jim Leach,
Republican of Iowa, is now addressing the Democratic convention. And in few
moments, it'll be Michelle
Obama's turn. Let's check back in with Norah O'Donnell and
the panel. Norah.

O'DONNELL: All right, Chris. Thanks
so much. You know, you
were talking about the economic disadvantages that Barack Obama, Michelle Obama
faced.

From the 10 p.m. ET hour of Fox News' America's Election HQ:

HUME: Down on the convention floor
right now, the delegates are hearing a speech by former Iowa Republican
Congressman Jim Leach. It'd
be nice if we could actually see him.

There you see him, Jim Leach, now.
It is well-known that Joe Lieberman, the one-time Democrat, now independent
senator from Connecticut, will address the Republican
convention.

Well, the Democrats don't have
anybody of quite the stature of Joe Lieberman to address this convention, but they got Jim Leach, who is receiving a respectful hearing from the delegates
here tonight. He is backing Barack Obama.

But of course, this reception for Jim Leach is as nothing compared to what I think may be the highlight
of this night so far, and that was the appearance by Senator Edward Kennedy.

KENNEDY [video clip]: Together we have known success and seen
setbacks, victory and defeat, but we have never lost our belief that we are all
called to a better country and a newer world. And I pledge to you, I pledge to
you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate
when we begin the [unintelligible]

LEACH: Well, it's the Marshall
Plan. And Everett Dirksen backed Lyndon
Johnson's landmark civil rights legislation.

HUME: Well, there you have Senator
Kennedy tonight. More [unintelligible]
you see on the screen,
Jim Leach. It was kind of a touching moment earlier. You
saw Senator Biden in that applause shot there as he listened to Senator
Kennedy.

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Fox's Carlson repeats claim that McCain "doesn't like to talk about when he was a POW"</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/fox-s-carlson-repeats-claim-that-mccain-doesn-t-like-20080883318.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, in an
August 18 recap of the performances of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain
at the August 16 Saddleback Civil Forum on the
Presidency in California, said she
thought "McCain was revealing a lot of his personal side" and
asserted that "he doesn't like to talk about when he was a
POW," repeating a false claim the media have advanced despite repeated references by McCain and his campaign to his
experience as a prisoner of war.

Appearing after Obama at the forum, McCain said "the most
gut-wrenching decision" he ever made was refusing an offer of early release
from a North Vietnamese prisoner-of-war camp ahead of POWs who had been in
captivity longer than he had. On the August 18 edition of Fox News' Fox &amp; Friends,
Carlson said of McCain's forum answers: "I thought for the first
time John McCain was revealing a lot of his personal side. You know, he
doesn't like to talk about when he was a POW or, for that matter, his
religion."

Media
Matters has noted that McCain has repeatedly highlighted
his experience as a POW, even as he and the media have promoted the notion that
he is reluctant to do so. For example, in a June 28 speech at the National
Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Conference, after speaking
about energy policy and immigration reform, McCain said
[from prepared remarks]: "When I was in prison in Vietnam, I like
other of my fellow POWs, was offered early release by my captors. Most of us
refused because we were bound to our code of conduct, which said those who had
been captured the earliest had to be released the soonest. My friend, Everett
Alvarez, a brave American of Mexican descent, had been shot down years before I
was, and had suffered for his country much more and much longer than I had. To
leave him behind would have shamed us."

After the Saddleback forum, The New
York Times reported there had been
some concern from Obama supporters that McCain
was not completely isolated during Obama's appearance with Pastor Rick Warren. The Times quoted
McCain campaign spokeswoman Nicolle Wallace's response, in which Wallace referred to McCain's POW experience: "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain,
a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous."

From the August 18 edition of Fox
News' Fox &amp; Friends:

REV.
JOEL HUNTER (senior pastor of Northland
Church, Orlando, Florida):
Well, I think it was two different approaches. Obama was very deliberative. But
in front of an evangelical audience, you've got a bunch of people looking
for "amen" lines. And so from that perspective, McCain really did
well. I think he missed a couple of opportunities, I think Obama missed a
couple of opportunities, and so, for those who are thinking through it,
it's a little bit more even, but McCain did have a good night.

CARLSON:
Ralph [Reed], real quickly, and then we're going to come back to you guys
after the break. But, I thought for the first time John McCain was revealing a
lot of his personal side. You know, he doesn't like to talk about when he
was a POW or, for that matter, his religion. But to me, it was very compelling
to hear these personal stories from him.

<td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Mediamatters.Org</span> - Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, in an
August 18 recap of the performances of Sen.

On the August 18 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends,
Carlson said of McCain's forum answers: "I thought for the first
time John McCain was revealing a lot of his personal side.

News' Fox & Friends:

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Citing response about Hanoi prison, Politico characterized as "new" McCain's willingness to discuss his "biography"</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/citing-response-about-hanoi-prison-politico-characterized-20080851225.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">In an August 18 Politico
article about Sen.
John McCain's August 17 appearance at Pastor Rick Warren's
Saddleback Church, chief political
writer Mike Allen and executive
editor Jim VandeHei noted that in response to Warren's
question about "[w]hat's the most gut-wrenching decision you've ever had
to make," McCain cited his refusal to accept an early release from a
North Vietnamese prison camp. Allen and VandeHei claimed that McCain's
answer "shows the power of his biography, and a new willingness to
publicly discuss it." In fact, McCain has repeatedly referred to his Vietnam War
record, as Media Matters for America
has noted, and has specifically cited
his refusal to accept an early release in a book, interviews, speeches, and
campaign ads since 1999.

In a June 25 blog entry, Politico senior political writer Jonathan Martin similarly wrote that
McCain's decision to decline early release "is perhaps the most
compelling element of his biography yet something which he has rarely voiced in
his years in pubilc [sic] life." And as Media
Matters for America documented, in a February 4 article, Martin
also falsely suggested that McCain did not "spotlight" his military
experience and years as a prisoner of
war in Vietnam
during his 2000 presidential campaign. By contrast, Politico senior political writer Ben Smith noted in a June 30 article that McCain has "written repeatedly of
his service":

McCain has written repeatedly of his
service, including in a long 1973 magazine article
and in his memoir, "Faith of My Fathers." A Navy aviator from a
military family, he was shot down on his 23rd sortie over Vietnam on Oct.
26, 1967. His mission was to bomb a power plant in the North Vietnamese
capital. Already suffering from broken limbs, he was beaten by a crowd before
being taken to a POW camp. After being tortured there, he participated in some
Vietnamese propaganda efforts.

"I had learned what we all
learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine,"
he later wrote.

But he later defied his captors by
refusing to meet with anti-war delegations from abroad, he wrote, and he also
refused the most valuable special treatment he was offered: early release.

"I did not want to go out of
order," he later wrote. He was finally released on March 14, 1973.

Below are additional examples from 1999 to 2008 of McCain discussing his refusal to
accept early release:

Faith of My Fathers

McCain discusses
his refusal to accept an early release repeatedly in his 1999 book, Faith of My Fathers (Random House). For
example, on Page 235 of
the paperback edition, McCain writes:

I wanted to say yes. I badly wanted
to go home. I was tired and sick, and despite my bad attitude, I was often
afraid. But I couldn't keep from my own counsel the knowledge of how my
release would affect my father, and my fellow prisoners. I knew what the
Vietnamese hoped to gain from my release.

[...]

Moreover, I knew that every prisoner
the Vietnamese tried to break, those who had arrived before me and those who
would come after me, would be taunted with the story of how an admiral's
son had gone home early, a lucky beneficiary of America's class-conscious
society. I knew that my release would add to the suffering of men who were
already straining to keep faith with their country. I was injured, but I
believed I could survive. I couldn't persuade myself to leave.

1999 to 2000

In a September 13, 1999, interview on Fox
News' Special Report with Brit Hume,
while promoting Faith of My Fathers, McCain
discussed "a particular time when the Vietnamese offered me the
opportunity for early release." From the interview (retrieved from the Nexis news database):

HUME: Now when you were there --
When one reads, even when one captivity and the deprivation of it, but of the
repeated beatings and torture and the terrible physical condition you were in,
I mean, to any ordinary person, it seems like an impossible ordeal. To what
extent were you thinking about your family, your father, and your grandfather
and others when you were going through that?

MCCAIN: Oh, I clearly didn't want to
embarrass my family. I tried to do the best I could, which was not enough, by
the way, but there came a particular time when the Vietnamese offered me the
opportunity for early release. I knew they were doing it because of the
propaganda they would get from releasing the admiral's son, who was commander
in chief of all U.S.
forces in the Pacific, and I knew that it was a violation of our code of
conduct.

But I also not only was it my
father's approval or disapproval and my grandfather's, but also that of the --
my fellow POWs, who would have been told, "See the admiral's son gets to
go home and you stay." And I thought that would have a bad impact on their
morale.

An October 28, 1999, Washington Post article by staff
writer Howard Kurtz noted that McCain aired
a television ad in which a narrator stated of McCain: "When found to be
the son and grandson of admirals, was offered early release; he refused."

McCain aired a February 2000 radio ad in which a narrator said of
McCain: "In Vietnam,
John McCain stood up to his communist captors and refused early release from
prison. In Washington,
he's the conservative reformer attacking big government waste."

According to a February 25, 2000, Los Angeles Times
article, McCain aired a television
ad which featured the text: "McCain refused early release from prison,
where he suffered repeated beatings and was held for 5 1/2 years."

2008 campaign

McCain aired a December 2007
television ad in which Boston
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said: "McCain has been tested like no
other politician in America.
As a prisoner of war, he turned down an offer for early release because he
refused preferential treatment."

In a January 1 Washington
Post article, reporter
Alec MacGillis wrote that "[a]t many of his [McCain's] events, his
campaign sets up a screen and plays for the crowd a three-minute film called
'Service With Honor,' telling the story of McCain's more than five
years of captivity in a North Vietnamese prison after his Navy plane was shot
down in 1967. 'He was offered early release, and he told 'em to shove
it,' says one fellow prisoner of war, Paul Galanti."

At a June 26
campaign event in Cincinnati,
McCain said:
"When I was allowed the opportunity, given the opportunity to return home
early from prison camp. I decided against that because I knew the effect that
it would have on my fellow prisoners."

In a June 28 speech to the
National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, a July 8 speech to the
League of United Latin American Citizens, and a July 14 speech to National
Council of La Raza Convention, McCain repeated
this statement: "When I was in prison in Vietnam, I like
other of my fellow POWs, was offered early release by my captors. Most of us
refused because we were bound to our code of conduct, which said those who had
been captured the earliest had to be released the soonest."

In a July 8 McCain campaign television ad, an announcer
states of McCain:
"John McCain: Shot down. Bayoneted. Tortured. Offered early release, he
said, 'No.' He'd sworn an oath."

At a July 17
campaign event in Kansas City, Missouri, McCain said:
"[T]he Vietnamese came to me and said, we'll allow you to go home early
because my father happened to be a high ranking admiral. Our code of conduct
said that only those go home early in order of capture. It was a brave young
Mexican-American by the name of Everett Alvarez who had been in prison a couple

McCain said (retrieved from Nexis): "One time when I was in prison in North Vietnam
and the North Vietnamese came and said, 'You can go home early,'
because my father was a high-ranking admiral, I chose not to do that."

From Allen and VandeHei's August 18 Politico article:

5) McCain shows the
power of his biography, and a new willingness to publicly discuss it.

WARREN: "What's the most
gut-wrenching decision you've ever had to make? And what was the process that
you used to make it?"

MCCAIN: "It was long ago, and
far away, in a prison camp in North
Vietnam. My father was a high-ranking
admiral. The Vietnamese came and said that I could leave prison early. And we
had a code of conduct. It said you only leave by order of capture. I also had a
dear and beloved friend, who was from California
... who had been shot down before me. But I wasn't in good physical shape.
In fact, I was in rather bad physical shape. So I said no. Now, in interest of
full disclosure, I'm happy I didn't know the war was going to last for another
three years or so.

"But I said no, and I'll never
forget sitting in my last answer, and the high-ranking officer offered it,
slammed the door and the interrogator said, 'Go back to your cell. It's
going to be very tough on you now.' And it was. But not only the toughest
decision I ever made, but I am most happy about that decision, than any
decision I've ever made in my life." (APPLAUSE).

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; RENTALS} - 3 rooms in Victorian on Oak/Emery border/6blocks to MacBART+shopping (oakland north / temescal) $510</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/business-and-economy/real-estate/rentals/3-rooms-in-victorian-on-oak-emery-border-6blocks-20080770722.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Available Aug 1st or sooner as needed:

There are 3 separate bedrooms available in this big Victorian home. The bedrooms are part of a remodelled attic that is part of a 2 story 7 bedroom house .All 3 of the available bedrooms are on the upper floor/the attic. The rents for each of the bedrooms range from $510--525-540 respectively, depending on which room size(10x14,11x14,12x14+).

The location is on 34th st ,between San Pablo ave and Market st.It should be considered as essentially safe and not noisy, though the general area is lower income, and every once in a while ,has it's moments

The location is perfect in many ways.Macarthur BART is 6 blocks away.A major shopping mall is 5-6 blocks away.It has Pak and Save supermarket(a Safeway knockoff).Home Depot,Office Max,Michaels Art,Sportsmart,Best Buy,Radio Shack,Starbucks, and a lot more...The freeway access is great with freeway 24 and 580 on ramps 2-3 blocks away. And 880 and 80 are within a mile.It is centrally located between downtown Oakland,Berkeley, and San Francisco is as close in the East Bay as you can get(about a mile from the toll booth)and buses are extremely convenient and go everywhere from here.It is convenient for Expressions College and California College of Arts, but not for UC Berkeley Students(3.5 miles). There is ample on-street parking.

The bedrooms are all on the above average size...12x14+,11x14,10x14....all have newer rust colored carpet and thick pad. They are all on the upper floor(attic) and the upper floor has it's own bathroom(w/bathtub/but no shower upstairs) and a separate fully functioning kitchen(ie stove, fridge, sink, cabinets, etc). There is a smaller eating/living area upstairs to accompany the living room/downstairs.The attic went through a remodel in the last few months(which is the reason for all the bedrooms being available at the same time) has new ceramic tile floors in the kitchen eating area and granite tile countertops

There is a washer and dryer in the basement and some storage possibilities,There is a collective participation of Cable TV and internet making it pretty inexpensive/cheap.There is a good sized redwood deck to relax and smoke on(no smoking indoors). There is a big backyard with lots of fruit trees.

The existing downstairs roomates are a easy going set of individuals. The "politics" of this household is "independent" with a friendly/good/relaxed comfort level.

The description of the roommates are :

Patrick,28,been here 3+ years, works at the Home Depot in the Mall, easy going, articulate, non smoker, lite drinker, used to be tidy, now not so much, but not messy,a nice balance of friendly yet independent....

then Everett,27,been here 2+ years, recently went to Expressions College and completed the Audio Engineering program, now works at Rasputin's records, ,drinker, smoker, not too tidy, nice guy

then Bennett,32,been living here almost a year,schoolteacher in the Oakland Unified School District,easy going,quieter,more to himself,has a girlfriend,tidier,nice guy....

and Austin,23,been here about 6 months, going to Expressions college for graphics and animation arts, mature for his age,a few tattoos and piercings, not messy, nice guy.....

roommates frequently share a pizza and soda or a breakfast ,give/get rides, hang out at times, but there is no expectation or requirement to do so.

All of these folks are downstairs ,so though they are the roomates, you would possibly spend more interactivity with the other folks who would be renting the available bedrooms upstairs. But whoever connects more ,it goes wherever it goes.Or you can be more of an independent roommate...just be a good roommate..ie not noisy, reasonably considerate and respectful of your roommates. We are looking for roommates who would be good roommates, reasonably considerate and respectful of other roommate concerns...ie noise, housekkeping when dishes or messiness is not acceptable,etc..And a little tolerance of others not to be perfect all the time,ie..some dishes buildup. In other words,a balance between tidy and understanding that roomates aren't always perfect,a little tolerant, etc.

Other than that, there is a security deposit of 1.5 times the rent, someone who demonstrates an intention of staying a year or longer is preferred for stability and roommate bonding/comfort level,PGE is about $35-45,Cable Internet and TV would be about $15-20 for both,No couples or pets, someone on the reasonably quieter side...again,someone who can tolerate a limited degree of untidyness on any given day in the kitchen within reason,no smoking indoors....

So,this is a good bang for the buck, good sized bedrooms,a washer and dryer,a deck, close to BART and shopping and freeways..not great but not bad neighborhood, for a rent that is almost the cheapest around....
