<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Road rage filmer writes about his media experience</title>

<summary type="text/plain"> Rick Adams shot a video of a man clinging to the hood of a car driven by an intoxicated maniac, and writes about what happened to him as a result of filming the incident. [T]he frenzy around it was unsettling to me; as soon as it was published (including some really stupid factual errors) the story was around the world and it made me wonder: how accurate are the stories I know nothing about but read all the time? If something as small as this could have errors in it (some of which I won't go into as they really should be kept in the courtroom, as far as I'm concerned) because of a feeding frenzy does that bode well for our acceptance of everything else we read in the Oregonian or hear on the Today show? A small example: somewhere, somebody got the idea the video was taken with a cell phone and you can tell from the headlines that the media thought this was a cool concept. My cell phone doesn't even take stills, let alone video, but never mind: CELL PHONE CAPTURES ROAD RAGE INCIDENT, blared the trumpets. As a guitar player I know only too well that you can't take back a note once it's been played. I also found the immediate media concern trolling a little hard to take. When I told one local TV station's door-to-door news crew I really didn't want to participate in the whole process because it seemed like they were trying to sensationalize the issue the reporter popped up with "But you might have some information that's vital! And if you didn't speak up the case might be harmed! Then how would you feel?" And I lost track of how many times I was asked to describe how I felt when I was filming the incident, always framed as a leading question telling me how I should have been feeling and cueing up the response they had in mind but which I never did give to anyone. The most amusing things I saw were comments to the Oregonian's story online, which assured me that the entire event had been staged and that the photos were hoaxes. <title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Citing response about Hanoi prison, Politico characterized as "new" McCain's willingness to discuss his "biography"</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/citing-response-about-hanoi-prison-politico-characterized-20080851225.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">In an August 18 Politico
article about Sen.
John McCain's August 17 appearance at Pastor Rick Warren's
Saddleback Church, chief political
writer Mike Allen and executive
editor Jim VandeHei noted that in response to Warren's
question about "[w]hat's the most gut-wrenching decision you've ever had
to make," McCain cited his refusal to accept an early release from a
North Vietnamese prison camp. Allen and VandeHei claimed that McCain's
answer "shows the power of his biography, and a new willingness to
publicly discuss it." In fact, McCain has repeatedly referred to his Vietnam War
record, as Media Matters for America
has noted, and has specifically cited
his refusal to accept an early release in a book, interviews, speeches, and
campaign ads since 1999.

In a June 25 blog entry, Politico senior political writer Jonathan Martin similarly wrote that
McCain's decision to decline early release "is perhaps the most
compelling element of his biography yet something which he has rarely voiced in
his years in pubilc [sic] life." And as Media
Matters for America documented, in a February 4 article, Martin
also falsely suggested that McCain did not "spotlight" his military
experience and years as a prisoner of
war in Vietnam
during his 2000 presidential campaign. By contrast, Politico senior political writer Ben Smith noted in a June 30 article that McCain has "written repeatedly of
his service":

McCain has written repeatedly of his
service, including in a long 1973 magazine article
and in his memoir, "Faith of My Fathers." A Navy aviator from a
military family, he was shot down on his 23rd sortie over Vietnam on Oct.
26, 1967. His mission was to bomb a power plant in the North Vietnamese
capital. Already suffering from broken limbs, he was beaten by a crowd before
being taken to a POW camp. After being tortured there, he participated in some
Vietnamese propaganda efforts.

"I had learned what we all
learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine,"
he later wrote.

But he later defied his captors by
refusing to meet with anti-war delegations from abroad, he wrote, and he also
refused the most valuable special treatment he was offered: early release.

"I did not want to go out of
order," he later wrote. He was finally released on March 14, 1973.

Below are additional examples from 1999 to 2008 of McCain discussing his refusal to
accept early release:

Faith of My Fathers

McCain discusses
his refusal to accept an early release repeatedly in his 1999 book, Faith of My Fathers (Random House). For
example, on Page 235 of
the paperback edition, McCain writes:

I wanted to say yes. I badly wanted
to go home. I was tired and sick, and despite my bad attitude, I was often
afraid. But I couldn't keep from my own counsel the knowledge of how my
release would affect my father, and my fellow prisoners. I knew what the
Vietnamese hoped to gain from my release.

[...]

Moreover, I knew that every prisoner
the Vietnamese tried to break, those who had arrived before me and those who
would come after me, would be taunted with the story of how an admiral's
son had gone home early, a lucky beneficiary of America's class-conscious
society. I knew that my release would add to the suffering of men who were
already straining to keep faith with their country. I was injured, but I
believed I could survive. I couldn't persuade myself to leave.

1999 to 2000

In a September 13, 1999, interview on Fox
News' Special Report with Brit Hume,
while promoting Faith of My Fathers, McCain
discussed "a particular time when the Vietnamese offered me the
opportunity for early release." From the interview (retrieved from the Nexis news database):

HUME: Now when you were there --
When one reads, even when one captivity and the deprivation of it, but of the
repeated beatings and torture and the terrible physical condition you were in,
I mean, to any ordinary person, it seems like an impossible ordeal. To what
extent were you thinking about your family, your father, and your grandfather
and others when you were going through that?

MCCAIN: Oh, I clearly didn't want to
embarrass my family. I tried to do the best I could, which was not enough, by
the way, but there came a particular time when the Vietnamese offered me the
opportunity for early release. I knew they were doing it because of the
propaganda they would get from releasing the admiral's son, who was commander
in chief of all U.S.
forces in the Pacific, and I knew that it was a violation of our code of
conduct.

But I also not only was it my
father's approval or disapproval and my grandfather's, but also that of the --
my fellow POWs, who would have been told, "See the admiral's son gets to
go home and you stay." And I thought that would have a bad impact on their
morale.

An October 28, 1999, Washington Post article by staff
writer Howard Kurtz noted that McCain aired
a television ad in which a narrator stated of McCain: "When found to be
the son and grandson of admirals, was offered early release; he refused."

McCain aired a February 2000 radio ad in which a narrator said of
McCain: "In Vietnam,
John McCain stood up to his communist captors and refused early release from
prison. In Washington,
he's the conservative reformer attacking big government waste."

According to a February 25, 2000, Los Angeles Times
article, McCain aired a television
ad which featured the text: "McCain refused early release from prison,
where he suffered repeated beatings and was held for 5 1/2 years."

2008 campaign

McCain aired a December 2007
television ad in which Boston
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said: "McCain has been tested like no
other politician in America.
As a prisoner of war, he turned down an offer for early release because he
refused preferential treatment."

In a January 1 Washington
Post article, reporter
Alec MacGillis wrote that "[a]t many of his [McCain's] events, his
campaign sets up a screen and plays for the crowd a three-minute film called
'Service With Honor,' telling the story of McCain's more than five
years of captivity in a North Vietnamese prison after his Navy plane was shot
down in 1967. 'He was offered early release, and he told 'em to shove
it,' says one fellow prisoner of war, Paul Galanti."

At a June 26
campaign event in Cincinnati,
McCain said:
"When I was allowed the opportunity, given the opportunity to return home
early from prison camp. I decided against that because I knew the effect that
it would have on my fellow prisoners."

In a June 28 speech to the
National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, a July 8 speech to the
League of United Latin American Citizens, and a July 14 speech to National
Council of La Raza Convention, McCain repeated
this statement: "When I was in prison in Vietnam, I like
other of my fellow POWs, was offered early release by my captors. Most of us
refused because we were bound to our code of conduct, which said those who had
been captured the earliest had to be released the soonest."

In a July 8 McCain campaign television ad, an announcer
states of McCain:
"John McCain: Shot down. Bayoneted. Tortured. Offered early release, he
said, 'No.' He'd sworn an oath."

At a July 17
campaign event in Kansas City, Missouri, McCain said:
"[T]he Vietnamese came to me and said, we'll allow you to go home early
because my father happened to be a high ranking admiral. Our code of conduct
said that only those go home early in order of capture. It was a brave young
Mexican-American by the name of Everett Alvarez who had been in prison a couple
years longer than I had. So I knew I had to refuse." Similarly, at a July
18 campaign event in Warren, Michigan,
McCain said (retrieved from Nexis): "One time when I was in prison in North Vietnam
and the North Vietnamese came and said, 'You can go home early,'
because my father was a high-ranking admiral, I chose not to do that."

From Allen and VandeHei's August 18 Politico article:

5) McCain shows the
power of his biography, and a new willingness to publicly discuss it.

WARREN: "What's the most
gut-wrenching decision you've ever had to make? And what was the process that
you used to make it?"

MCCAIN: "It was long ago, and
far away, in a prison camp in North
Vietnam. My father was a high-ranking
admiral. The Vietnamese came and said that I could leave prison early. And we
had a code of conduct. It said you only leave by order of capture. I also had a
dear and beloved friend, who was from California
... who had been shot down before me. But I wasn't in good physical shape.
In fact, I was in rather bad physical shape. So I said no. Now, in interest of
full disclosure, I'm happy I didn't know the war was going to last for another
three years or so.

"But I said no, and I'll never
forget sitting in my last answer, and the high-ranking officer offered it,
slammed the door and the interrogator said, 'Go back to your cell. It's
going to be very tough on you now.' And it was. But not only the toughest
decision I ever made, but I am most happy about that decision, than any
decision I've ever made in my life." (APPLAUSE).

John McCain cited his refusal to accept an early release from a North Vietnamese prison camp. The Politico claimed that McCain&#39;s answer "shows the power of his biography, and a new willingness to publicly discuss it." <summary type="text/plain">On the August 10 edition of Fox Broadcasting
Co.'s Fox News Sunday, host
Chris Wallace did not challenge McCain campaign manager Rick Davis'
assertion that "[y]ou'll never find [Sen.] John McCain changing his
stripes just because of an election," despite criticism of McCain's
shifts on policy, some of which he has acknowledged. In fact, as Media Matters for America has repeatedly
documented
throughout the course of the 2008 election
season, in an attempt to satisfy conservative Republicans and more closely
conform to the views of the GOP base, McCain "chang[ed] his
stripes" and reversed his position on comprehensive immigration reform and
the religious right.

Immigration. McCain now
     says
that "we've got to secure the borders first" -- a position at
     odds with his prior assertion
that border security could not be disaggregated from other aspects of
comprehensive immigration reform without being rendered ineffective.
     McCain further stated
during the January 30 Republican presidential debate
that he would not vote for the comprehensive reform bill he co-sponsored with
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) if it came to a vote on the Senate floor. A
November 4, 2007, Associated Press article reporting on McCain's
reversal noted that McCain now "emphasizes securing the borders
first," and also quoted McCain stating: "I understand why you
would call it a, quote, shift. ... I say it is a lesson learned about what
the American people's priorities are. And their priority is to secure the
     borders."

In
a March 3 New York Times article,
Elisabeth Bumiller wrote, "Senator John McCain likes to present himself as
the candidate of the 'Straight Talk Express' who does not pander to
voters or change his positions with the political breeze. But the fine print of
his record in the Senate indicates that he has been a lot less consistent on
some of his signature issues than he has presented himself to be so far in his
presidential campaign." The article stated that McCain "has also
expressed varying positions on immigration, torture, abortion and Donald H.
Rumsfeld, the former defense secretary." On immigration, Bumiller wrote:

Mr.
McCain has also moved from his original position on immigration. In 2005, he
joined forces with Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, to
co-sponsor an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws. Although the
legislation included toughening border security, its center was a provision
that would have provided a pathway to citizenship for many of the 12 million
illegal immigrants in the United
  States.

Conservatives
immediately branded the bill as amnesty and fired steadily at Mr. McCain. After
seeing his campaign and his fund-raising efforts derail last summer -- which
his advisers attributed in large part to his position on immigration -- Mr.
McCain now says that he got the message from voters. These days he speaks
almost exclusively about border security, although he does say that it is not
possible to deport 12 million illegal immigrants and that he would never
deport the mother of a soldier serving in Iraq.

Additionally,
in a June 20 Politico piece, journalist
Gebe Martinez reported on McCain's reversal on immigration:

McCain,
the Arizona
senator, dismayed Latinos last year when he stepped back from his immigration
bill that would have tightened the borders and legalized undocumented
immigrants. As boos and hisses from angry Republican conservatives grew louder
at campaign events, he switched course and vowed to "first" secure
the borders. Were his failed bill to come up again, he would not vote for it,
he said.

[...]

Trying
to regain Latino support, McCain has chastised Republicans who stoke the fires
of the immigration at election time. And at a private meeting with Chicago-area
Latinos last week, he promised to push for a comprehensive immigration bill.

"It
sounds like he's trying to have it both ways, and it's not convincing
anyone," said Frank Sharry, who also was involved in immigration bill
negotiations when he headed the National Immigration Forum.

This
is not the McCain Hispanics thought they knew. Even after the 2001 terrorist
attacks placed an emphasis on national security, McCain's speeches to Latino
audiences and on the Senate floor prioritized the compassionate side of the
immigration argument.

He
understood that border security "first" means "deportation only"
in the eyes of immigrant activists, and he championed a broader approach.

As
the Senate mulled immigration in 2006, McCain often stood in the Capitol's
corridors, pounding his fist in the air, arguing that border enforcement would
not work without simultaneously penalizing employers who hire workers
illegally, creating a temporary worker program and finding a way to bring 12
million illegal immigrants "out of the shadows" of society.

"It
won't work! It won't work!" he protested of suggestions to do enforcement
first. The stool cannot stand on one leg.

Religious right.
During his 2000 presidential run, McCain called
Revs. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson "agents of intolerance," asserting:
"Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of
American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis
Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell
on the right." However, McCain stated on the April 2, 2006, edition
     of NBC's Meet the
     Press that he no longer
believed Falwell to be an "agent of intolerance."
Subsequently, McCain delivered the commencement address at Falwell's Liberty University in May 2006. A May 14,
     2006, Los Angeles
Times article (retrieved from Nexis) described
McCain's address as "an olive branch to Christian conservatives who could
impede his presidential ambitions." The Times also noted that
"[a]fter McCain accepted the invitation, critics accused him of
     pandering for political purposes."

Additionally, McCain admitted that during the 2000 South Carolina primary he pandered to
Republican primary voters by failing to take a consistent position on whether
the Confederate flag should fly
atop South Carolina's
Capitol dome. As reported in an April 20, 2000, New York Times article, McCain said that the flag was a "symbol of racism and
slavery" but on the very next day called it a "symbol of
heritage."

Indeed, in an April 20, 2000,
speech, McCain stated that he had
"compromise[d]" his "principles" in his statements on the
flag:

McCAIN:
My ancestors fought for the Confederacy, and I am sure that many, maybe all of
them, fought with courage and with faith that they were serving a cause greater
than themselves. But
I don't believe their service, however distinguished, needs to be commemorated
in a way that offends, that deeply hurts, people whose ancestors were once
denied their freedom by my ancestors.

[...]

As I admitted, I should have done this earlier, when an honest
answer could have affected me personally. I did not do so for one reason alone.
I feared that if I answered honestly, I could not win the South Carolina primary. So, I chose to
compromise my principles. I broke my promise to always tell the truth.

From the August 10 edition of Fox
Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday:

WALLACE:
Let me switch to another member of the administration, the vice president, who
we now find out has been invited to speak at the Republican convention on the
first night But here is what McCain said about Cheney last year about the
"mishandling," McCain's word, of the Iraq war.

Let's
put it up: "Of course, the president bears the ultimate responsibility,
but he was very badly served by both the vice president and, most of all, the
secretary of Defense." Mr. Davis, given their sharp differences over Iraq,
over the handling of interrogations of terror detainees, why is John McCain
inviting the vice president to the convention?

DAVIS: Because I think John McCain believes that the only way
we're going to change the culture of this town, the only way we're
actually going ever start getting anything done, is if we stop putting our own
self interests ahead. You know, if he wanted to make a point and, you know, strike
out at this administration, it would have been very easy to do that, but he is
not that kind of candidate.

He
is the kind of man who says, "Look, we've got to get everybody on
board in order to get progress in this country. I'm not going to, you know,
take retaliation or retribution against anybody, whether they're
Democrats or Republicans." If we are going to move forward, this culture
has to change. The only guy who's been able to do that in this town for
the last eight years is John McCain.

Barack
Obama has never sided against his party's interest on any important
issue. He's never joined with
Republicans across the isle like John McCain has with Democrats. We
have an ad out that shows a lot of Democrats, leaders in Congress, saying great
things about John McCain. Of course, that was before there was a political
campaign. You'll never find John McCain
changing his stripes just because of an election.

WALLACE:
What kind of Vice President does John McCain think Dick Cheney has
been.
