<summary type="text/plain">Hi CLers!

Me

My name is Sara and I'm looking for a roommate! I'm a 24 year old Mills College alum and Bay Area native. I am a Prenatal and Post Partum Massage Therapist, Post Partum and Birth Doula, Lactation Educator, Natural Resources worker and a part time nanny. I work with moms and babies everyday and feel honored to do so. I was a Women Studies major at Mills and wrote my senior thesis on menstruation. In addition to women studies and pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting, I'm also interested in poetry slams, taking dance classes, journaling, singing classical music, jogging etc etc. I'm responsible, kind, respectful and pretty quiet. I'm also queer and Jewish and have been actively involved with both communities for years.

The Room and Apartment

The room is 9x10 feet with a large closet and a place for you to put a dresser or hang clothes. There are two large windows that get plenty of sunlight during the day and offer a view of a tree. Wall to wall carpeting. The bathroom has some new fixtures, new cabinets and a new toilet. There's a bathtub as well. The kitchen has new beautiful granite countertops, new cabinets and a new oven. Living room has wall to wall carpeting and a large window. The room comes with a free 8x10 feet storage unit if you should want it for biking parking, storage furniture etc. The kitchen and living room are fully furnished. Free wireless internet with the option of getting pay internet if so desire. Street parking only.

The Neighborhood

I think it's great! I live two blocks from several bus lines that take you to downtown Oakland, Chinatown, Glenview and BART. The apt is 1.3 miles from Lake Merritt BART and 1.7 from 12th St Oakland City Center BART. It's all flat so it's walkable. The apartment is two blocks from the Parkway Theatre on Park Blvd, Rooz Cafe, Woody's Laundrymat, Casa Vallarta and Champa Gardens (on 8th Ave). The apt is three blocks from New Earth Artists Cafe, Walgreen's, Albertson's and Merritt Bakery, seven blocks from Cafe 504, Leaning Tower of Pizza and five blocks from Lake Merritt. The Lakeshore shops (Arizmendi's, Trader Joe's, Peet's, Vine Wine Bar, Lamyx Tea Bar), the new Whole Foods and the Grand Lake shops (Grand Lake Theatre, Neecha Thai, Waldenbooks) are all one mile away. The street is pretty quiet.

Month to month lease, first last and security deposit ($490 + $490 +100)= $1,080 to move in. No pets, street parking only. PGE runs around $35 a month, internet is free (but I'm open to getting pay internet if desired), water and garbage paid for by landlord. No smoking, no drugs. Move in between now and July 1st. <title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Wash. Post repeats falsehood about why Casey was denied 1992 convention speaking slot</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/wash-post-repeats-falsehood-about-why-casey-was-20080895412.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">In an August 14 Washington Post article discussing
scheduled speakers at the Democratic National Convention, staff writers
Jonathan Weisman and Michael Shear asserted, "Also
speaking that [Wednesday] night will be Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. (Pa.), an
antiabortion Democrat whose father was denied a speaking slot at Bill Clinton's
nominating convention in 1992 because of his opposition to abortion,"
echoing a longtime, much-repeated falsehood that former Pennsylvania Gov.
Robert P. Casey Sr. was denied a speaking role at the convention because he
opposed abortion rights. In fact, as Media Matters for America has documented, others who opposed abortion
rights were given speaking roles at the convention, so Casey's opposition to
abortion rights alone could not have been the deciding factor in the Democratic
National Committee's decision not to give him a speaking role. As Media Matters has
noted, Michael Crowley of The New Republic
reported in 1996: "According to those who actually doled out the 1992 convention
speaking slots, Casey was denied a turn for one simple reason: his refusal to
endorse the Clinton-Gore ticket."

From the August 14 Washington Post article:

Hillary
Clinton will get a prime speaking slot Tuesday and is expected to speak of her
historic bid to become the first female nominee of a major party, as well as
the nation's economic challenges. She will share the stage with Warner, who is
running for the Senate; Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer; and Sebelius, all of
whom could be new faces for voters who last tuned in to Democratic politics in
2004. Warner is expected to stress how he won support in Republican regions of
rural Virginia
by listening to the needs and struggles of ordinary voters.

Also
speaking that night will be Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. (Pa.), an antiabortion Democrat whose father
was denied a speaking slot at Bill Clinton's nominating convention in 1992
because of his opposition to abortion. Casey, who backed Obama over Hillary
Clinton in his state's hard-fought primary, is not expected to speak about
abortion, but Democrats conceded that his name alone speaks to the issue.

Wednesday's
national security theme has stoked speculation that Biden, chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will be moving up to the prime-time spot to
accept his party's vice presidential nomination. But Bayh also has a speaking
spot that day.

In fact, others who opposed abortion rights were given speaking roles at the convention, so Casey&#39;s opposition to abortion rights alone could not have been the deciding factor in the decision not to give him a speaking role. {...}</blockquote><div style="font:8pt Verdana,Arial;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;">Published:</span> August 14, 2008, 11:18 pm - <span style="color:#808080;">Indexed:</span> August 15, 2008, 3:25 pm - <span style="color:#808080;">Page Size:</span>&nbsp;17KB</div><div style="font:8pt Verdana,Arial;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;">Category:</span> <a href="http://www.world-of-newave.info/society/">Society</a> &gt; <a href="http://www.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/">Issues</a> &gt; <a href="http://www.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/">Business</a> &gt; <a href="http://www.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/">Media</a> &gt; <a href="http://www.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/"><b>Bias and Balance</b></a></div></td></tr></table>

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Wash. Post cropped Obama quote in purporting to contrast Obama's and McCain's identities as Americans</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/wash-post-cropped-obama-quote-in-purporting-to-contrast-20080874312.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">In an
August 12 Washington Post article, reporter Alec MacGillis claimed that Sen. Barack Obama is the
"embodiment of a new America" and that "Obama lacks a ready
answer" to the question of where he is from, in contrast with Sen. John
McCain, who, MacGillis wrote, "hails from an America that exalted service
to country." In support of his claim of a contrast between the
two candidates' identities as Americans, MacGillis falsely suggested that
in a July 24 speech in Berlin, Obama referred
to himself only as a "citizen of the world." In fact, in that speech,
Obama referred to himself as "a citizen -- a proud citizen of the United
States, and a fellow citizen of the world," a self-description very similar
to President Reagan's assertion in a 1982
speech before the United Nations General Assembly that "I speak today as
both a citizen of the United States and of the world."

MacGillis
also uncritically wrote that McCain "preaches a mantra of personal honor
and of the nation over the individual -- 'Country First,' as his
campaign slogan declares," ignoring reporting by the Post's own Howard Kurtz, who asserted
that McCain's "Country First" slogan was being used to call
Obama's patriotism into question and who pointed out falsehoods in
McCain's ads attacking Obama. Writing about McCain's "Troop
Funding" ad in a July 18 post on the Post's The
Trail blog, Kurtz asserted: "The tagline -- 'country first'
-- is a not-so-subtle attempt to suggest that the former Navy aviator, pictured
against American flag images, is more patriotic than Obama, who did not serve
in the military and spent part of his childhood in Indonesia." Further,
the "Troop Funding" ad contains misleading claims about Obama's
role in hearings on Afghanistan
and Obama's votes on funding the troops. Additionally, in a subsequent ad
titled simply "Troops," McCain repeated the misleading claims about
Afghanistan
hearings and troop funding and falsely suggested that Obama did not
visit wounded troops during his recent trip abroad.

From MacGillis' August 12 Washington Post article:

McCain
hails from an America
that exalted service to country, and he is the scion of a military family who
endured five years in enemy captivity and who preaches a mantra of personal
honor and of the nation over the individual -- "Country First," as
his campaign slogan declares. His wife is conspicuously reserved at his side;
he does not communicate by e-mail and only recently learned to use the
Internet; even his roguish sense of humor carries echoes of the more
chauvinistic 1950s of his youth.

Obama's
embodiment of a newer America
begins but hardly ends with the fact that he would be the first black
president. In a country where people liked to know where you were from, Obama
lacks a ready answer -- he is part Hawaii,
part Kansas, part Chicago. In a recent speech in Berlin, he declared
himself a "citizen of the world."

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Wash. Post ombudsman admonishes Milbank for using anonymous source, imputing meaning to secondhand quote</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/wash-post-ombudsman-admonishes-milbank-for-using-2008085674.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Responding to reader complaints about Washington Post columnist Dana
Milbank's use in a July 30 column of an "anonymous secondhand
quotation from Sen. Barack Obama" to characterize Obama as
"presumptuous," Post
ombudsman Deborah Howell chastised Milbank for citing the source anonymously
and for imputing a particular interpretation to a quote he did not witness.
Howell wrote in her August 10 column: "Anonymous quotes should be used
sparingly; this one wasn't worth it. If you weren't there, be careful about
judging the context." Further, Howell found that "[n]either [Post national political reporter Jonathan]
Weisman nor Milbank called the source" to confirm their interpretation of
the quote.

In a July 31 online chat,
Milbank addressed criticism of
his July 30 column by referring to such criticism as "whining," and
wrote: "House Democratic aides got up Thursday morning and decided that
the quotes looked bad. While not challenging the quotations themselves, they
said that the quotes were out of context. This is interesting, because our
source --
who was among the people complaining about the quotes yesterday -- sent us the quotes in
writing in an email Wednesday night. Evidently no recording was made, so we'll
probably never know the exact wording."

And in an August 7 online discussion, Milbank asserted:
"My colleague
Jonathan Weisman and I believe the quote was correct as written, and that this
supposed 'context' is a recreation, after-the-fact, by Democratic aides who
were worried about how the quote looked. Perhaps Obama didn't mean for it to
come out that way, but there's every reason to believe it did."

However, as Media Matters
for America has noted,
Weisman did not share Milbank's certainty about their initial
interpretation of Obama's alleged quote. While Weisman wrote in a July 29 entry
on the Post's
political blog, The Trail, that Obama "was beginning to believe his own
hype," he later updated it to report that "House leadership aides
pushed back against interpretations of this comment as self-aggrandizing,
saying that when the presumptive Democratic nominee said, 'I have become
a symbol of the possibility of America,' he was actually trying to
deflect attention from himself."
In an August 8 online chat,
Weisman called his own position "a little more squishy" than
Milbank's flat assertion that the context provided the next day was
"a recreation, after-the-fact." Weisman further wrote, "I can't say
whether the first rendition was more accurate than the second. I can say those
providing the second rendition had good reason to supply context that would
nullify the first. I can also say I trust the suppliers of both
renditions."

From the August 10 Washington Post column "The Anger Over an
Obama Quote":

Readers and partisans -- about 160
-- said the quote was taken out of context or misinterpreted. Their anger was
mainly focused on Milbank, who used the quote as part of a sharply written
critique of Obama as his party's "presumptuous nominee."

There was no tape and no transcript of
Obama's talk, but the quote came from someone who told me that the quote didn't
reflect arrogance. Here's where it gets tricky for me; I dislike most anonymous
quotes, including this one. I figured out who the source probably was and
confirmed my suspicion by talking with him, but no journalist should ever
reveal another's source except in the gravest of circumstances.

Neither Weisman nor Milbank called
the source. Weisman considered the source more or less official and didn't use
his name, even though the source didn't ask for anonymity in the e-mail.
Weisman said he has "an understanding going back years that he is giving
me privileged information from closed meetings; it is by definition on
background. With someone you interact with constantly, there just aren't the
formalities of sourcing on every conversation and e-mail." Milbank called
the source "unimpeachable. When he gives you a quote you can take it to
the bank. You don't need to go around verifying it with others."

[...]

Several lessons can be learned here.
For reporters: Anonymous quotes should be used sparingly; this one wasn't worth
it. If you weren't there, be careful about judging the context. Treat readers
well; we need them.
