<description>There is nothing quite so potent as cheap Christmas cards. I don't mean charity cards, the sort that offer tasteful woodcuts, sharp contemporary graphics or well-done reproductions of old masters in return for your contribution to cerebral palsy or clean water. What I'm talking about are those cards that annually reshuffle a tiny repertoire of wayside inns, robins and snow-banked cottages, and then brazenly keep all the profits for themselves. The kind of cards, mostly found in large assortment boxes, that remain blithely confident that nothing says Christmas quite as instantly as the steeple of a country church smeared with some dandruffy glitter. What's striking is how all these favoured images hail from Britain's pre-industrial past. So you'll see cottages rather than suburban villas, pheasants instead of turkeys, coaching inns rather than railway stations. There may be squires and parsons and even a Regency buck, but you'll search in vain for a factory manager or his clerk. There could be some peasants, skating across a low, frozen pond, but nary a factory worker in sight. It's as if Christmas can only happen in a land known as Once Upon A Time. The irony is, of course, that nothing about Christmas is quite so modern as this custom of sending cards. In 1843, the busy public servant Henry Cole realised that he didn't have time to do the usual seasonal touching base with his vast social and professional network. So instead he commissioned an artist to knock up something suitable and then mailed it out to everyone in his address book. Sharp-eyed commentators couldn't help noticing that Cole was the man who had recently helped set up the penny post. What better advertisement for the system's reach and efficiency than an annual blizzard of envelopes arriving on the nation's doormat? So as far as conservative souls were concerned, this new custom of sending Christmas cards represented everything that was offputting about the modern industrial age. It substituted impersonal contact for face-to-face sociability. Instead of the personal letter or a firm handshake, there was a mean piece of pasteboard handed to you by a servant of the state. The cards themselves smacked of the tradesman's quarterly bill, and there was something intrusive and coy about the lisping hope that the recipient might enjoy "every health and happiness" over the next year. No wonder that it took about 30 years for the idea to catch on. For it was not until the 1870s that the nation got into the habit of exchanging illustrated bits of card each December with their entire social and professional network. No wonder, too, that after an early flirtation with a range of visual material, the Christmas card settled into endlessly circulated images of Britain from an earlier, pre-industrial age. It was as if the only way to offset the essential anomie of the Christmas card was to load it with images from a time when the bonds between people were organic and unforced. The wayside inn spoke of a habitual sociability between strangers; the partridge suggested a natural world that marched to its own seasonal rhythms; the village church stood for a community that honoured the hierarchical social bonds which Cole, with his tradesman's sensibilities, had cut across so crassly. And yet the fact that all these steeples and game birds and hostelries remain so prominently in circulation suggests their continuing cultural punch. For if the images really had ceased to mean anything, they would surely have quietly disappeared long before now. Just perhaps, deep down, we recognise and value them as symbols of social and ecological continuity. With our own Christmases continuing to stir up sharp anxiety about what really matters - public partying or private family time, retail expenditure or authentic emotional exchange, supermarket food or artisanal produce - it looks as though we hanker after the certainty of Once Upon A Time more strongly than is quite comfortable to admit.kathryn.hughes22@googlemail.comChristmasguardian.co.uk © Guardian News &amp; Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms &amp; Conditions | More Feeds

<description>The US Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates again this week amid mounting speculation of a new round of coordinated international action to halt the panic that has swept the world's financial markets. The need for further moves has been underlined by fresh signs of strain in the global banking system and the wider economy. On Friday stockmarkets around the world nosedived and the pound crashed as investors reacted to the worst fall in UK economic output for almost 20 years.Last night the International Monetary Fund reached a draft agreement to lend Ukraine $16.5bn (£10.5bn) in exchange for reforms to the domestic banking system, while Kommunalkredit, Austria's eighth largest bank, became the first in the country to seek state aid to ensure liquidity.Figures from the US this week are expected to show the US economy contracted by about 0.5% in the third quarter."The incoming data are likely to confirm that the [US] economy has entered deep recession and that deflation is now a serious threat," Capital Economics said in a weekly research note. JP Morgan economist Bruce Kasman warned that the signs were pointing increasingly "to a deep and synchronised global recession".The Federal Reserve is expected to cut rates by half a percentage point, taking US rates down to 1%. Nick Parsons, head of markets strategy at nabCapital in London, said yesterday he expected the Bank of England monetary policy committee to follow the Fed's move with a one-point cut from the current 4.5%. He said the MPC had not made a full one-point cut since the Bank of England was made independent in 1997, but added: "Unprecedented times call for unprecedented action."Lord Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer, urged the government to cut interest rates by 1% as soon as possible. The cross-bench peer told BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend: "I feel that they [the Bank of England] have been so bound by the inflation target that the looking after of the stability of the economy, of helping small businesses, was almost a secondary condition. That's why I felt that they should have been able to take proactive moves much earlier to reduce interest rates. I think one of the fundamental problems ... has been that the Bank of England has had so many of its powers removed."Former business secretary John Hutton said the scale and depth of the economic conditions Britain was facing were "unprecedented". He told BBC1's Politics Show: "In the past when we've had economic downturns, the problem has either been an inflationary problem, maybe our industries have not adapted enough and we haven't seen investment going in. This is a problem that has been festering in the financial markets for a while; it's now spilling out into the real economy."The pressure for further cuts in interest rates came amid mounting evidence that the global turmoil is far from over.Germany's finance minister, Peer Steinbrück, warned yesterday that the danger of banking collapses was far from over. Kuwait's central bank stepped in yesterday to support Gulf Bank, which has been hit by derivative trading losses. Gulf stockmarkets fell sharply, with the Qatar and Oman indices down more than 8% and Dubai down 5.53%.Steinbrück told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper: "Any all-clear signal would be false. I can't mislead our citizens and say we've got everything under control." The government's ?500bn (£400bn) rescue package ran until the end of 2009 and would certainly be needed until then. His comments came as the heads of two of Germany's biggest regional banks, WestLB and HSH Nordbank, indicated they would also draw on the package. Bayern LB, which faces losses of ?3bn, last week sought a ?6.4bn capital injection and, according to Spiegel magazine, may have to ask the government to take on a bigger share of the bail-out than foreseen.KBC, the largely Flemish bank, was said to be in talks yesterday with Belgium's deputy prime minister and finance minister, Didier Reynders, about a ?3.5bn state injection. The bank warned on October 15 it had made net losses in the third quarter of up to ?930m, after writing off ?1.6bn of its structured products portfolio. It insisted then that it had no need to follow the example of two of its Belgian peers, Fortis and Dexia, and demand a bail-out.Results yesterday from Aluminium Corp of China underlined the impact of the credit crunch on the global economy. The world's third-largest alumina producer said its quarterly earnings fell 92%.As China's largest producer of the metal tries to stabilise prices and cut costs, it has reduced its aluminium capacity by 18% and alumina by 10%. Analysts say that is not enough to shore up prices of aluminium, widely used in the slumping construction and automobile industries. The governor of the central bank warned that China needed to "confront the many destabilising and uncertain factors that exist".US economyUnited StatesGlobal economyBanking sectorUS Interest ratesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News &amp; Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms &amp; Conditions | More Feeds</description>

		<description>
Six years after its official launch, the consumer electronics industry's high-definition successor to DVD still hasn't taken off.

That's got manufacturers concerned enough to take action. Fortunately for consumers, the action will include lowering prices, adding features and integrating players into "connected ecosystems" that let users take advantage of increasingly popular online media as well as content that comes on shiny plastic discs.

Three main factors contribute to the perception that the now-dominant high-definition Blu-ray disc standard is stagnating: high overall prices, a general satisfaction with the current DVD format and buyer confusion in the midst of competing and multiplying technologies.

"The [Blu-ray format] is being adopted in a similar pattern as previous technologies, but it is not being adopted at the same [rate]," says Paul Erickson, Director of DVD and HD Market Research for DisplaySearch. While DVD also took years to become popular, he says, the adoption curve for Blu-ray is even longer and is fraught with bumpy obstacles, such as a few DRM security code and playback problems.

The two-and-a-half-year standards war with a competing high-def format, HD DVD, certainly didn't help. The battle ended in early 2008 when HD DVD's last major supporter, Toshiba, threw in the towel, but consumer confusion lingers. A tough economy has also slowed consumers' acceptance of the format.

At next week's CEDIA 2008 conference, an annual gathering of television and home theater manufacturers, retailers and installers, expect to see an orgy of competing Blu-ray players. Some will focus on low prices (like Philips and Netlogic), and others will highlight features that integrate their physical content with wireless systems to download content from the internet (such as BD Live).

Still, not everyone is convinced that these measures will help Blu-ray. Josh Martin of the Yankee Group says there are still too many "unclear messages" surrounding the format (such as unconventional BD spec profiles, which offer different versions of a player's capabilities) that throw that ecosystem out of whack.

There's also a value disconnect: Most people can't justify purchasing a Blu-ray player that costs five times as much as a DVD player -- especially if it's not five times better. "The opportunity lies in creating a simple, mass-market device," says Martin. So far, that device hasn't arrived, despite tries by everyone from Sony to Magnavox.

Until that device arrives, Martin says, a small price change (like Sony's recent 25 percent drop announcement), or even a cool spec upgrade won't make a difference. "Blu-ray will continue to struggle towards the end of [2008] because the format adoption is driven by price," Martin concludes.

Andy Parsons, a senior vice president at Pioneer and chair of the Blu-ray Association, sees a different side. He points to the 8 million Blu-ray players already sold this year (on pace to triple last year's sales) as an example that people are excited about Blu-ray and HD technologies in general, and will respond to more aggressive features:

"People say [low Blu-ray sales last year] were because of a lack of demand but it was really a lack of supplies. The demand was high," Parsons says.

The shortage wasn't caused by the difficulty and expense of creating Blu-ray discs and players, which many critics of the format often cite, but because manufacturers simply didn't expect to sell that many players in the first place, Parsons says.

Given the state of change, companies at CEDIA 2008 are focusing on developing the technology, regardless of the price. Pioneer will release a new Elite player next week that the company says will surpass every other high-end player in quality, but it comes with a heart-stopping $2,000 price tag. Yamaha is coming out with its own high-end player, as is up-and-coming Sherwood. And, it seems, every big-time audio maker at CEDIA is preparing huge systems to blow up the high-end sound produced by these players.

But that relative excess is the heart of the problem, says Gartner analyst Steve Kleyhans. For him, the entertainment ecosystem is simply too expensive to keep up with. In order to fully realize the value of a Blu-ray player's high-definition features, families also need to buy new HDTVs, new speakers and who knows, maybe an extra fluffy couch. Watching an HD movie on the 14-inch analog TV just won't cut it.

That's why Kleyhans predicts that more HDTVs will be sold as more Blu-ray players and other high-def media proliferates.

What about the threat from downloadable or streaming internet video? Interestingly, most manufacturers and analysts we talked with do not believe that online media is an immediate threat to optical discs.

First, the national bandwidth infrastructure is incomplete and can't come close to delivering HD movies on a wide enough scale to compete with physical discs within the next five years. Second, the market for set-top boxes that display internet video on your TV offers too many options, and most services are still incomplete (for example, Roku's set-top box only provides access to 10 percent of the Netflix catalog). And third, as Martin concludes, the experience is "still not as simple as popping in a disc."

It looks like for the majority of people, popping a disc in a slot for entertainment is proving too hard of a compulsion to let go. It's just going to take awhile before that disc is a Blu-ray one.
