<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Paranoia magazine in Washington Post</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/paranoia-magazine-in-washington-post-2008025387.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain"> Today's Washington Post has a profile of Paranoia magazine, a terrific print magazine about wild conspiracies, Forteana, and the paranormal. I remember when Paranoia first launched in 1992 during the print 'zine heyday. I haven't read Paranoia in a while but I'm going out later to find a copy at my local independent newsagent. From the Washington Post: I decided to ask the co-editors, Joan D'Arc and Al Hidell. I called and Joan D'Arc answered. Well, I wasn't born yesterday so I knew that name was fake -- a subtle reference to Joan of Arc. So I asked her: "What's your real name?" She refused to tell me. "You must surely realize that there are people out there who hate us and would want to harm us." She told me that editing Paranoia was not a full-time job so I asked her what she did for a living. "I'm not at liberty to discuss that," she said. Apparently, when you're exposing the secret government you can't be too careful. D'Arc told me that Paranoia was born in 1992 in Providence, R.I., where she ran an alternative bookstore called Newspeak, which hosted weekly meetings of the Providence Conspiracy League. The league started collecting conspiracy information and storing it in a big loose-leaf binder with a picture of Lee Harvey Oswald on the cover. And the binder led to the magazine. Link to the Washington Post article, Link to Paranoia (via The Anomalist)...</summary>

<summary type="text/plain">For ten years, skeptic magician James Randi has offered a million dollars to "anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event." He's just announced that the James Randi Educational Foundation is discontinuing the Million-Dollar Challenge two years from now. The money will be freed, he says, "to generally add to our flexibility" and enable the group "to do many more projects." From his note on the matter: Now, we?re sure that there will be those who will offer all kinds of objections to this decision ? though they could have simply applied and won the prize. There will be accusations that the JREF is concerned about the safety of the prize money ? which was never any sort of concern, I can assure you ? and there will be more claims that the money was never there in the first place. I can see the professionals out there sighing in relief that they no longer have to answer questions about why they won?t take the prize, and they?ll just wait out the remaining period that the prize is available. All that?s to be expected. Ten years is long enough to wait. The hundreds of poorly-constructed applications, and the endless hours of phone, e-mail, and in-person discussions we?ve had to suffer through, will be things of the past, for us at the JREF. Those who believe they have mystic powers now have two full years to apply? Let?s see what happens. Link...</summary>

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Interview with the Daily Grail's Greg Taylor</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/interview-with-the-daily-grail-s-greg-taylor-2007127278.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Reality Sandwich interviewed Greg Taylor, proprietor of the Daily Grail, a wonderfully strange blog covering anomalous phenomena, the occult, and high weirdness of all stripes, and editor of Darklore, a print journal of "exceptional observations, hidden history, the paranormal and esoteric science." From the Reality Sandwich interview: Another topic of esoteric interest discussed on your site is secret societies. Groups like the Skull and Bones, the Knights Templar, Opus Dei, the Bohemian Club, and the Freemasons have been shrouded in mystery and rumor throughout history. I've heard some bizarre stories involving secret rites and rituals, for example the Skull and Bonesmen who are forced to masturbate publicly in coffins as part of their initiation, and the Freemasons reciting the gruesome manner in which they will be ritualistically murdered and dismembered if they betray their oath to the group. What are we to think of stories like these? Can it be said that there is a definite occult dimension in these rituals? I think most "secret societies" that we know today are really just glorified men's clubs, although some have their basis in original occult practices. The resurrection rites of the Masons have parallels in many cultures, and are to some degree a magickal rite (on a slight tangent ? if you analyze the Catholic Mass you'll find it too is pretty much a magickal rite aimed at altering consciousness). But overall, it would seem to me that these societies have lost their past, and are basically just "going through the motions." I think the real question about modern secret societies is their influence on politics. It still bewilders me that more was not made in the last U.S. presidential election about the fact that both Dubya Bush and John Kerry were members of the same secret society, Skull and Bones. A society with only (roughly) 800 living members, who refuse to reveal anything about the society and their relationship with it, manage to have "control" of the two candidates to lead 300 million people and the world's most powerful nation? That doesn't sound like democratic choice to me. Additionally, the world's economic bodies seem to be becoming the new "secret societies." Important decisions affecting billions of people are made behind closed doors, by a very small cartel. Link (via Further)...</summary>
