<title>{EUROPE &gt; NEWS AND MEDIA} - Thousands ordered to flee homes as wildfires sweep into Los Angeles</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/europe/united-kingdom/news-and-media/thousands-ordered-to-flee-homes-as-wildfires-sweep-20081158212.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Wildfires destroyed hundreds of homes in southern California yesterday, closing major roads and forcing thousands of residents to escape to safety. The flames swept across a trailer park in Los Angeles, scorching trees and beating back firefighters.'We have almost total devastation in the mobile park,' said Los Angeles Fire Steve Ruda. 'I can't even read the street names because the signs are melting.'Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, a day after 111 homes were burnt to the ground in the wealthy community of Montecito north-west of the city. Celebrities such as Michael Douglas and Oprah Winfrey own houses there. The Los Angeles blaze threatened at least 1,000 properties, according to officials. They estimated some 10,000 people were under orders to evacuate. One resident was said to be in a serious condition and four firefighters were treated for minor injuries. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said dry winds from the desert had fanned the fires in the district of Sylmar that had destroyed more homes than any other in the past decade. He urged residents in the area to leave quickly if they were in harm's way. 'This fire can be on you at a moment's notice,' he said. The fires raged on both sides of Interstate 5, the main freeway connecting Los Angeles with the north, and the path of transmission lines bringing power to the city. Two of the five main lines had to be taken down because of damage to a converting station, and a third power line was directly damaged by heat, causing 115,000 customers to be without power for 45 minutes. California's fire season, which traditionally starts in June, has been lengthening and getting worse, according to officials. Los Angeles, which is home to nearly 10 million people, has been largely spared damage this year. In October last year 30 blazes raged across southern California, forcing the evacuation of more than 500,000 people and damaging some 2,000 homes.United StatesNatural disasters and extreme weatherguardian.co.uk © Guardian News &amp; Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms &amp; Conditions | More Feeds</summary>

<title>{EUROPE &gt; NEWS AND MEDIA} - California wildfire chars Montecito luxury belt</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/europe/united-kingdom/news-and-media/california-wildfire-chars-montecito-luxury-belt-20081177021.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Firefighters in southern California were bracing today for the resurgence of a wildfire that has injured 13 people and destroyed 100 homes. No deaths were reported in the fire itself, but a 98-year-old man died shortly after being evacuated, authorities said. Winds gusting to 70 miles per hour fuelled the fire, which began on Thursday and raged through dry brush and eucalyptus trees to consume rows of luxury homes in Montecito, 90 miles north-west of Los Angeles.Multimillion-dollar houses were reduced to rubble in the area, home to Michael Douglas, Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities. Among those reportedly damaged was the house belonging to Christopher Lloyd, the actor best known as the zany scientist in the Back to the Future movies.Winfrey and the actor Rob Lowe said their properties were spared for the time being. Winfrey began her Chicago-based show talking about the fire and showing live TV news footage of the blaze, which she said was burning "about two miles from my house".Lowe, a neighbour of Winfrey, who stars on the TV drama Brothers &amp; Sisters, said he and his son fled after his wife called them to warn: "Montecito's on fire. Get out.""We got in the car and pulled out of the driveway and the entire mountain behind us was (in) flames 200 feet high, shooting into the air," Lowe told Winfrey in a telephone interview. "It was absolutely Armageddon."Rosie Neeley, 31, fled with her parents before their house was consumed by fire overnight. "When we saw the flames coming down the canyon we knew it was too late," she said.Residents of about 5,500 homes were evacuated in Montecito, the neighbouring city of Santa Barbara, and surrounding areas. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, declared a state of emergency for Santa Barbara county, sending reinforcements to the local fire departments.More than 1,000 firefighters fought to contain the blaze ahead of winds that were expected to pick up early today. "It's not a time to relax," said the Santa Barbara deputy fire chief, Tom Franklin. "Everybody's got to be diligent through tonight. It's the last evening of these wind events."Among the 13 people reported injured, 10 had smoke inhalation and three had burns, the county's emergency operations centre said in a statement. Two of the burns cases were described as serious.Natural disasters and extreme weatherUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News &amp; Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms &amp; Conditions | More Feeds</summary>

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Brokaw falsely suggested Oprah hosted Obama as a presidential candidate</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/brokaw-falsely-suggested-oprah-hosted-obama-as-2008095329.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">On the September 7 edition of NBC's Meet the Press, citing a New York Post article
reporting that television talk show host Oprah Winfrey will not host Gov. Sarah
Palin on her show before the presidential election, Tom Brokaw falsely
suggested that Winfrey has hosted Sen. Barack Obama on her show during
Obama's campaign for president. Brokaw stated: "Oprah did come out
for Barack Obama, did have him on the show," then asked Sen. Joe Biden: "Do you think
that some people will see that as an elitist position, that, in some ways,
Democrats may be afraid of her -- Sarah Palin?" But the Post article Brokaw cited itself reported
that Winfrey has not hosted Obama since he began his presidential campaign and
that Winfrey said she decided when she endorsed Obama that she would not use her show "as a platform for any of the
candidates."

The Post
reported that "Winfrey, who tapes her high-rated daily show in Chicago, has had
Obama as a guest twice -- in January 2005
and October 2006. Both
occasions were before the
Illinois senator officially announced he was running for
the White House." The Post also reported that Winfrey said: "At the beginning of this presidential campaign, when
I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not
to use my show
as a platform for
any of the candidates." According to the Post, "Winfrey added 'I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and
I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.' "

From the September 6 New York Post article:

The daytime-TV talk
queen said it was
highly unlikely she'd have
the self-proclaimed "hockey mom" appear alongside her,
even after reports that
there had been discussions to have Palin appear on a future show.

"At the
beginning of this presidential campaign, when
I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not
to use my show
as a platform for
any of the candidates," Winfrey said
in a statement.

Winfrey, a big supporter of Barack Obama, has
had other politicians on her show before, including Presidents Bush
and Clinton and former Vice
President Al Gore.

The TV host did leave the door open for
a Palin appearance - but only after the Nov. 4 election.

Winfrey added, "I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and
I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

Winfrey, who
tapes her high-rated daily show in Chicago, has
had Obama as a guest twice - in January 2005
and October 2006.

Both occasions were
before the Illinois senator officially announced he was running for
the White House.

From the September 7 edition of NBC's Meet
the Press:

BROKAW: I want to move on in a
moment, but here's another headline that appeared in the New York Post -- Oprah
Winfrey decided not to have Sarah Palin on the show before the election.
"No-Prah!" -- that's the New York Post headline. "TV First Lady's Palin Insult," as they called it. Oprah did come out
for Barack Obama, did have him on the show. Do you think that some people will
see that as an elitist position, that,
in some ways, Democrats
may be afraid of her -- Sarah Palin?

BIDEN: Oh, no, I don't think
so. I mean, I think
it's -- well, I don't -- look,
that's for voters to decide. You're not going to see anything elitist. Look, what you
hear immediately from Barack Obama and Joe Biden, "Family's off limits," and we mean it,
that the personal stuff relating to some of the stuff that was popping out on
the talk shows is just inappropriate.

This -- she's going to be judged, I assume,
the same way I'm going to
be judged: What does
she know? What does she think? What's her record? What's she going to do? And as I look down the road, that's how
I've always debated whoever I've
debated, including the
really tough women I work with, the smart women in the Senate. So, I really don't view this any
differently.

I may be surprised, here, down the
road, but, you know, I
just looking forward to debating her. I mean, why -- look, she had a great speech, but was
-- her silence on the issues was deafening. She didn't
mention a word about health care, a word about the environment, a word about
the middle-class. That never parted her lips. I mean, so I don't know where she is on those
things.

BROKAW: Let's talk about the
polls if we can for a moment.

BIDEN: Sure.

Inside our walls, you?ll find a team that's committed to our AdWords advertisers ? from identifying potential advertisers, to assisting current ones with day-to-day challenges, to strategizing with others for the future. That?s who we are. We?d love to have you join us. Posted by Eileen Duffy, AdWords Associate
