Overweight and obese people around the world are being conned out of billions of pounds a year by companies selling bogus health foods that do nothing to help them lose weight, a leading scientist has warned.Michael Lean, professor of human nutrition at Glasgow University, told the Guardian that of the hundreds of slimming strategies that are actively marketed at overweight people, the only ones proven to work are low-calorie diets, exercise programmes, the drugs orlistat and sibutramine, and in some cases bariatric surgery. In an editorial in the British Medical Journal, Lean attacks the "commercial exploitation of vulnerable patients with quack medicines" and calls for strict enforcement of new laws that have recently made it illegal for companies to mislead customers over the health benefits of their products.Unlike medicines, which must be proved to be effective in clinical trials, the regulations around health foods are less stringent. In May this year, the UK adopted an EU directive on unfair commercial practices that was drawn up to "protect vulnerable consumers who are often the target of unscrupulous traders". The directive obliges companies not to mislead consumers with health claims for their products."In the past it was a case of buyer beware, but now the law has changed and it's the marketeer that has to beware. If they're using misleading marketing, they are committing a crime," Lean said.In his article, Lean argues that despite the introduction of the new law many companies continue to mislead customers by selling foods that have no proven benefit to health."It is already illegal under food labelling regulations to claim that food products can treat or prevent disease. However, huge numbers of such claims are still made, particularly for obesity," he writes. In many cases, companies suggest only indirectly that a health food will help people lose weight. "The problem is that most food companies can't be bothered to do the research and in most cases, they know the products they're selling don't do what they say," Lean told the Guardian.Professor Lean has served as an expert on the Joint Health Claims Initiative, which criticised an advertising campaign for St Ivel Advance milk fronted by the fertility expert Robert Winston. The adverts claimed that the milk, which contains omega-3 fatty acid, might improve children's learning and concentration. The adverts were pulled following a ruling by the Advertising Standards Authority. "The new regulations provide good legislation to protect vulnerable consumers from misleading 'health food' claims. They now need to be enforced proactively to help direct doctors and consumers towards safe, cost-effective and evidence-based management of diseases," Lean writes in his editorial. "The regulations may even help with the bigger battle to prevent obesity, by prohibiting advertisements across the EU that encourage children to buy energy-dense products or to pester their parents to buy them."In 2000, a report from Richard Cleland at the US Federal Trade Commission estimated that $35bn (£22bn) was spent in the US alone on weight loss products, many of which were marketed with false or unsubstantiated claims, enticing 7% of the population to buy them.Food technologyMedical researchHealth & wellbeingHealthguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

(PHOTO: "Do you think he's alive???" shot by Kevin Law.) Over at Ethicurean, there's an extensive post exploring what the newly elected American president might do differently about food, farms, and related systems of energy and technology in the United States: According to Speech Wars, between April and October, John McCain uttered the word ?agriculture? only twice, and ?nutrition? just once. Barack Obama did slightly better, referring to ?agriculture? twelve times and ?nutrition? four times. He gave farms a passing mention in his speech at the Democratic National Convention in August. But let?s face it: for the most part, food was a quiet issue, sacrificed to our discussions about race and religion, gender and sexism, oil and bailouts. Meanwhile, food prices continued to rise. Our nation continued to lose farms daily. We continued to spend billions of dollars treating lifestyle diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Rural towns continued to wither. Fertilizer runoff continued to damage our drinking water. There?s no way around it: the Obama administration will need to address food issues head-on. Last month, Michael Pollan published a sweeping letter to the next president, Farmer in Chief, in the New York Times. After Pollan?s article was published, the American Farmland Trust noted that ?there is no topic of greater importance than the issues [Pollan] raises?it is time to elevate these issues to their rightful place on our national agenda.? Turns out Obama might agree; Obama read Pollan?s article and even worked it into discussions of energy policy. So what might we expect from an Obama administration when it comes to food policy? Maybe quite a bit. In his plan for rural America, he lays out a number of policy positions that are a departure from the status quo. A detailed list of what we know about Obama's likely changes in food policy follows, read the whole post here: What does an Obama win mean for the U.S. food supply? (Ethicurean)...

{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - Foul air fallacies

It's always uncomfortable when we have to humour someone close to us in the name of avoiding conflict. Right now at Thames Valley University, entire science departments must be feeling slightly embarrassed about their degrees in quackery. Because despite the refusal of all universities to disclose what they teach on these, the leaks keep coming, and Prof David Colquhoun of UCL continues to archive the comedy on his website. The latest batch of lecture notes from TVU sound more like religious evangelism than science. "Students and practitioners alike are frequently subject to negative expressions and even frank hostility from relatives ... it is therefore best to be forewarned that your adherence to 'alternative' principles will be tested in these ways."This is not an isolated incident. There is a BSc degree available from the Centre for Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management in Berkshire, ...#65279;whose prospectus reads: "Caring for and nurturing our future evolution through the successful support of our genetic code," which is validated by Middlesex University. It offers a mix of nutritionism and a self help method called "neurolinguistic programming", which developed out of the new age movement. The University of Westminster have consistently failed to offer me or Colquhoun meaningful information about their degree courses. But we do have - via Colquhoun - a leaked exam paper from its homeopathy BSc degree course finals, asking questions about miasma.Miasmatic theory originated in the middle ages and lasted until the middle of the 19th century, when diseases such as cholera and plague were believed to be spread by foul air, known as miasmas. John Snow showed in 1854 that cholera was spread through contaminated water - nothing to do with "miasmas" - and Robert Koch discovered the microbe that causes the disease in 1883. In fact, the story science can tell about cholera is well characterised and fiendishly fascinating. If you swallow some cholera bacteria, they shut down to pass through your murderously acidic stomach, and then, when they detect that they are in your small intestine, they start producing curly whip-like tails. These rotate to propel the bacteria through the pasty mucus that lines your small intestine, and up against the intestinal wall, where they can thrive.Once here, they again respond to their changed chemical surroundings, and start producing cholera toxin. This toxin pulls chloride ions across the bowel wall, and so water is drawn across with them, by osmosis, from your blood supply and into the passageway of your small intestine. This happens on a massive scale: your small intestine is suddenly full of water, which flies out of your arse at a phenomenal rate, carrying the multiplying and thriving new generations of Vibrio cholerae bacteria out into the drinking water and so on to the next host, unless proper sanitation measures are in place.Meanwhile, as this water flies out of you, dehydration rapidly sets in, and the only thing you can do to save your life is make sure you consume - almost continuously - the right mixture of dilute salt water and sugar, to replace the blood's water and salts lost in the diarrhoea. And fascinatingly, the single most successful evidence-based medical treatment in the history of humankind is something you've probably never heard of: the WHO rehydration recipe, used to treat people with diarrhoea, which has saved 3 million lives a year for the past two decades.Imagine being a part of inventing that. If I was going to teach anything on a science degree, it wouldn't be miasma, and it wouldn't be a secret.?
