{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - Accused appear in Russian court as Politkovskaya trial begins

The trial of three men allegedly involved in the murder of the campaigning Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya will be held in an open court, a judge ruled yesterday. The unusual decision by the military court in Moscow stunned Politkovskaya's family and lawyers, and means that for the first time details of the much-criticised police investigation will be made public. Prosecutors had wanted the case to be heard behind closed doors, but the evidence in Russia's most high-profile journalistic killing will now be laid out in a small, overcrowded Moscow courtroom. Three of the men accused of acting as accomplices in her murder appeared there yesterday, inside a cage. They include two brothers from Chechnya - Dzhabrail and Ibragim Makmudov - and a former police officer, Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. A fourth defendant, Pavel Ryaguzov, an officer with Russia's FSB intelligence agency, sat next to them, although he appears in a related case.Politkovskaya, a remorseless critic of the Kremlin, was shot dead two years ago outside her Moscow apartment block. Russian investigators have so far failed to catch her killer, who was seen on CCTV slipping into her building wearing a baseball cap. They have also been unable to identify who ordered her murder. The three main defendants are accused of acting as accomplices to her murder, carrying out surveillance and providing technical help. Yesterday, however, all said they had nothing to do with the contract-style killing. "We have no idea what happened," Dzhabrail Makmudov said, speaking to reporters allowed in during a chaotic 10-minute break in the proceedings. "We are hoping for a fair trial."Former colleagues of Politkovskaya expressed surprise that the case would be heard in open court. Prosecutors had said that was impossible because of the amount of secret documents involved and the alleged involvement of Ryaguzov."This was pretty unexpected," Sergei Sokolov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Politkovskaya's former newspaper, told the Guardian. "The prosecutor's office had insisted the trial should be closed. This means a political decision [to hold an open trial] has been taken." The lawyer for Politkovskaya's family, Karinna Moskalenko, criticised the official investigation, saying it had failed to lead to the arrest of the main protagonists. Police have named the killer as another Makmudov brother - Rustam, 34 - but say he has fled Russia.Politkovskaya, 48, won international acclaim for exposing the brutality of Russian forces and human rights abuses in Chechnya. She reserved her most vicious criticisms for Chechnya's pro-Moscow president, Ramzan Kadyrov, describing him as a "coward armed to the teeth and surrounded by bodyguards". Kadyrov denied having anything to do with her murder. "I don't kill women," he said.Politkovskaya was also an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin. He initially ignored the murder; later, he grudgingly described her as a "rather sharp critic" of the Kremlin, "which is good".The dangers of working as a journalist in Russia were starkly underscored on Friday, when a former colleague of Politkovskaya was assaulted near his home in the Moscow suburb of Khimki. Mikhail Beketov, a local newspaper editor, was found unconscious and covered in blood and was yesterday in a coma in hospital, where doctors had to amputate his leg. "Mikhail is floating between life and death," said a friend, Lyudmila Fedotova. "He remains in a coma. The doctors say he is the most seriously ill patient in the intensive care unit. This is what happens when you oppose certain people."Beketov had been a persistent opponent of the local administration, criticising its plans to cut down trees and move the bodies of wartime pilots to make way for a road. He had accused the authorities of harassing him.Anna PolitkovskayaPress & publishingRussiaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - Forty years on, McCartney wants the world to hear 'lost' Beatles epic

For Beatles fans across the world it has gained near mythical status. The 14-minute improvised track called 'Carnival of Light' was recorded in 1967 and played just once in public. It was never released because three of the Fab Four thought it too adventurous. The track, a jumble of shrieks and psychedelic effects, is said to be as far from the melodic ballads that made Sir Paul McCartney famous as it is possible to imagine. But now McCartney has said that the public will have the chance to judge for themselves.'It does exist,' McCartney says on a BBC Radio 4 arts programme to be broadcast this week. Talking to John Wilson, the presenter of Front Row, the former Beatle confirms that he still has a master tape of the work and says he suspects that 'the time has come for it to get its moment'.'I like it because it's the Beatles free, going off piste,' he adds.In the 40 years since 'Carnival of Light' was recorded by McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon in the Abbey Road studios in London, its collection of disparate rhythms has become a kind of holy grail for Beatles obsessives. The track was put together on 5 January 1967, in between working on the vocals for the song 'Penny Lane'. Once released it should offer proof that the Fab Four, and McCartney in particular, were much more avant-garde in their tastes than many gave them credit for. According to the few who heard the track on the one occasion the recording was played publicly, at a London music festival in 1967, it features the sound of gargled water and strangled shouts from Lennon which vie with church organs and distorted guitar.'We were set up in the studio and would just go in every day and record,' McCartney tells Wilson. 'I said to the guys, this is a bit indulgent but would you mind giving me 10 minutes? I've been asked to do this thing. All I want you to do is just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it. It doesn't need to make any sense. Hit a drum, wander to the piano, hit a few notes ... and then we put a bit of echo on it. It's very free.' McCartney had been commissioned to create a piece for an electronic music festival at the Roundhouse Theatre in north London by his friend Barry Miles. The event, the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, was organised by International Times, an underground newspaper. Many in the audience had no idea they were listening to a new Beatles track. Other performers included Delia Derbyshire whose work at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop included jointly creating the theme for Doctor Who.McCartney, who this month releases his third experimental album of new work under the alias the Fireman, regards 'Carnival of Light' as evidence of how musically adventurous he has always been. For the three other Beatles the track was just an oddity. George Harrison dismissed it as too weird. But McCartney is hopeful it can now be released with the agreement of the group's estate.'It will help reaffirm McCartney's claim to have been the most musically adventurous of all the Beatles,' said Wilson this weekend. 'He told me he would love to release the track. All he needs now is the blessing of Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia.'The piece was inspired, McCartney says, by the works of composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In his book Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, author Mark Lewisohn - who was played the track in 1987 - describes 'distorted, hypnotic drum and organ sounds, a distorted lead guitar, the sound of a church organ, various effects (water gargling was one) and, perhaps most intimidating of all, Lennon and McCartney screaming and bawling random phrases including "Are you all right?" and '"Barcelona!".'Beatles fans came close to hearing 'Carnival Of Light' in 1996 when it was considered for inclusion in the exhaustive Anthology compilation. 'We were listening to everything we'd every recorded,' McCartney says. 'I said it would be great to put this on because it would show we were working with really avant-garde stuff ... But it was vetoed. The guys didn't like the idea, like "this is rubbish".'McCartney revealed that George Harrison disparaged sonic experimentation as 'avant-garde a clue'.Sir George Martin, the Beatles producer who oversaw the track, has described it as 'one of those weird things'. 'It was a kind of uncomposed, free-for-all melange of sound that went on. It was not considered worthy of issuing as a normal piece of Beatles music at the time and was put away.'Coincidentally, McCartney played some of his Fireman compositions at the reopened Roundhouse venue last year during the Electric Proms. 'With the Fireman you're in disguise,' he told Observer Music Monthly. His pseudonym may have been taken from the lyric of 'Penny Lane' where a fireman 'rushes in from the pouring rain' and could also be a nod to his father, Jim McCartney, a firewatcher on the Liverpool docks in the Second World War. ?
Www.Guardian.Co.Uk - For Beatles fans across the world it has gained near mythical status. All he needs now is the blessing of Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia.'The piece was inspired, McCartney says, by the works of composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. one moved back to Europe, so we are looking for a replacement. We

in the biotech industry. Allen works from home and Amy works in

small friendly dogs, a 5 year old American Cocker Spaniel and a
puppy toy poodle who sleeps with us in the evening.

pretty easy going and can sleep pretty much no matter what. I'm not
too much of a party girl but I do like going out sometimes. If I do
anything that bugs you just tell me and I'll stop as long as it's
humanly possible. lol. I have a boyfriend who is around or I'm at
his place usually. He's easy going also and friendly. He LOVES the

                                    Amy and Allen (Homeowners):
We have always lived with roommates. Since we've moved into this
home in May, we brought along one of our roommates. The other
one moved back to Europe, so we are looking for a replacement. We
are fun and easy going professionals in our early thirties who work
in the biotech industry. Allen works from home and Amy works in
Foster City, while in the MBA program. We also have two
small friendly dogs, a 5 year old American Cocker Spaniel and a
puppy toy poodle who sleeps with us in the evening.

I'm in my mid twenties and am
finishing up my degree in Biochemistry and working full time. I'm
pretty easy going and can sleep pretty much no matter what. I'm not
too much of a party girl but I do like going out sometimes. If I do
anything that bugs you just tell me and I'll stop as long as it's
humanly possible. lol. I have a boyfriend who is around or I'm at
his place usually. He's easy going also and friendly. He LOVES the

room or in a ball it can roll around in so don't be nervous. He's
nice and his name is Mr. Chuha. And that's me in a blurb.

Comic Book Resources has a fantastic first-hand account of ordering a live miniature monkey from a comic book advertisment. Jeff Tuthill ordered one for about $25 in the early 1970s. Not wanting his parents to know, he had it shipped to his friend's house: It came in this little cardboard box. I mean, I?m saying small. It was probably the size of a shoebox, except it was higher. It had a little chicken wire screen window in it. There was a cut out. All you could see if you looked in there was his face. I brought it home, and I actually snuck it into the basement of the house. ... No instructions [were included]. He had this waist belt on, a collar, if you will, on his waist, with an unattached leash inside the box. So I opened the box up inside the cage, the monkey jumped out, I withdrew the box and found the leash. I have no idea where it came from; I assumed it came from Florida. I figured, well, it?s probably near dehydration, so I opened up the cage to put some water in it. It leapt out of the cage when I opened it up the second time! I mean, it was eyeing the pipes that I was unaware of. As soon as I opened the cage, it leapt up and grabbed onto the plumbing up on the ceiling and started using them like monkey bars, and he was just shooting along in the basement, chirping pretty loud. It was heading towards the finished side of the basement, where there was a drop ceiling, and if it got into those channels, I never would have got it. It would have been days to get this thing out of there. I grabbed it by its tail, and it came down on, starting literally up by my shoulder, like a drill press it landed on my arm, and every bite was breaking flesh. It was literally like an unsewing machine. It was literally unsewing my arm coming down, and I was pouring blood. I grabbed it by its neck with both my wrists, threw it back in the cage. It?s screaming like a scalded cat. I?m pouring blood. My friend?s laughing uncontrollably, and my father finally comes in the basement door and goes, ?Jeffery! What are you doing to that rabbit?? And I go, ?It?s not a rabbit, it?s a monkey, and it just bit the hell out of me.? ?A monkey? Bring it up here!? I?m pouring, I wrapped a t-shirt around my arm to stave off the bleeding, carried the cage upstairs, and I don?t know why I bothered sneaking it in, because they fell in love with it, and it was like, there was no problem at all. They took me to the emergency room and I got 28 stitches on my arm. MAIL-ORDER FRIENDS: THE COMIC BOOK SQUIRREL MONKEYS Previously on Boing Boing: ? Small gallery of old comic book ads...

{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - Tania Branigan examines the effects of recession on a Chinese city built on exports

The dislocated head of a baby doll stares blindly through the gate; WALL-E and Barbie Pet Doctor boxes are strewn across the yard. Two weeks ago, toymaker Smart Union was churning out playthings for children across the United States and Europe. Now it is in liquidation - leaving 7,000 employees in shock. "One day we went to work as usual, the next it was all closed," said Wei Sunying, at the gate of the factory in Dongguan, southern China, where she spent eight years painting plastic components in a fume-filled room."Thousands of us are looking for jobs now. We walk around every day till our feet ache but we can't find anything."Few in the west have heard of Dongguan, but the chances are that your shoes, your TV or your children's toys originated here. Exports have built a city of 14 million inhabitants, almost all migrant workers from the countryside. Its economy has sustained 15% annual growth in recent years. The global economic crisis is proving the final straw for exporters punished by rising costs and stronger currency. In the past year, chill winds have blown through the Pearl River Delta. Sixty-seven thousand small firms collapsed in the first half of 2008, many in these manufacturing heartlands, says the national economic planning body. Toy firms have been particularly badly hit, by safety scares and product recalls. Textile firms, with wafer-thin margins, are also reeling. Next came tighter credit for many foreign-owned firms, like Hong Kong's Smart Union. And then, in the past two months, a sharp drop in US and European consumer demand. A local trade association predicts that by late January, Dongguan and its neighbours Shenzhen and Guangzhou will lose 9,000 of their 45,000 factories. "Many factories are looking at completely empty order books," warned Stephen Green, head of China research at Standard Chartered, who believes the export sector may even shrink next year. Green believes China will see 7.9% growth in 2009 - well below the double digit figures of the past five years. That may sound enviable to western countries facing recession, but with the working age population still growing, China needs to grow by at least 8% to maintain its employment rate. The fall-out will be concentrated in provinces such as Guangdong."The social impact of this is going to be huge. The problems are getting bigger and bigger," said Wooyeal Paik, researching Dongguan's industry and migrant workforce at the University of California at Los Angeles."Disgruntled workers left jobless will complain more ... You will see demonstrations and picketing. And probably there's a risk of violence against bosses - especially foreigners."Dongguan's government stepped in to reimburse the Smart Union workers to the tune of 24m yuan (£2.2m) after thousands gathered at the factory gates and outside local authority offices. But two month's back pay - 1,200 yuan for most - will not last long. Wei, from Guizhou, is one of many struggling to find work. "I came here as a migrant worker because my children need money for schooling," she said. New job offers aren't always what they seem, added 26-year-old Fang Jianlin, whose friends were recently conned. "Recruiters told them the salaries were very good, but they were asked for money. They got robbed; some were even beaten," he said.Smart Union was such a popular employer that Fang paid a hefty "introduction fee" to get his job there. At worst, he and his wife would earn about 600 yuan a month; at the busiest times, when production ran until 2am, they could take home 2,100 yuan each. It's a tragic end to the dream which lures millions of workers to Dongguan each year, where they struggle and study their way towards the promise of a regular income. At the city's night schools, thousands of workers end their days with classes on every subject from car maintenance to law. Bob Li is one of the success stories. He arrived in 1995 as a labourer; "everyone in my hometown had heard Guangdong was covered in gold," he explained. Now he manages a factory for Richall, supplying durable bags to companies such as Walmart, Carlsberg and Disney. He is unnerved by the economic downturn. "These days it is getting more and more difficult for factories like us," he said, citing the cost of wages and materials. "The price of our materials has risen because they're made from oil ... Taken together, costs have risen by 30-40%."To some extent, Dongguan has become a victim of its own success. The rising prosperity of the region has created inflationary pressures. Workers want higher wages; new labour laws are designed to wipe out sweatshops that bring higher costs which squeeze many companies. Manufacturers have already fled inland to cheaper provinces, in many cases encouraged by Guangdong authorities, who hoped to move the province up the value chain - condensing two hundred years of western industrial development into fewer than 15. "We have a policy to empty the cage for the new birds," Guangdong's vice-governor Wan Qingliang told reporters this month. "The ultimate target is to build the Pearl River Delta into the core region of modern manufacturing." Others are unsure of the wisdom of the policy in the face of a worldwide downturn. "Places like Guangdong miscalculated the development of the economy. They actually tried to push out those labour intensive and small and medium sized enterprises [SMEs] out of the [established industrial] area because they wanted hi-tech industries there. But when something bad happens, like the economic downturn, what are they going to do?" said Paik. He acknowledges that numerous east Asian economies have moved up the value chain in the same way, and that the Chinese government deserves to be confident given its economic record. "But they haven't experienced a serious economic downturn except right after 1989 and have been overconfident in their policy of the quick transformation of industrial structure toward hi-tech in Guangdong," he cautioned. The risk is that officials might push the city off the economic ladder rather than up it. Whether subsidies, tax rebates and other support for small firms can save them remains to be seen.Yet China's rising living standards in the 30 years since economic reforms were launched has left most people optimistic about its long-term prospects. Migrant workers returning home think they may come back in a few years."If we compare the situation to when I first arrived, I have already found my pot of gold," said Bob Li. "But I can still see it's just the beginning."ChinaGlobal economyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Www.Guardian.Co.Uk - The dislocated head of a baby doll stares blindly through the gate; WALL-E and Barbie Pet Doctor boxes are strewn across the yard.
			Tania Branigan examines the effects of recession on a Chinese city built on exports |				World news |				The Guardian	 {...} Local trade association predicts that Dongguan and two neighbouring cities will lose 9,000 of their 45,000 factories {...}

Published: November 1, 2008, 12:14 am - Indexed: November 1, 2008, 11:53 am - Page Size: 76KB

Category: Regional > Europe > United Kingdom > News and Media
