<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; LODGING} - Quiet cottage on Mendocino coast in meadow, gardens. PHOTOS below. (mendocino county) $125 1bd</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/travel-and-tourism/lodging/quiet-cottage-on-mendocino-coast-in-meadow-gardens-20080822710.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Vacation rental on the Mendocino Coast, 3.5 hours north of San Francisco.

    OUR ONLY OPEN DATES now are: Aug 24-30, &amp; Sept 1st on

	Our Quiet Meadow Cottage is located on the spectacular Mendocino Coast in a beautiful rural area just 1.5 miles from Pacific Ocean on 13 acres of gardens, meadows and redwood forests, with horses and llamas next door on our quiet, dead-end, paved road. We are 5 miles from the fishing village of Albion, 12 from historically preserved coastal village of Mendocino (an art, wine and food lover's paradise), and 20 to 30 miles from Fort Bragg’s harbor, ocean fishing and whale-watching cruises, sand dunes, Botanical Gardens, the historic Skunk Train, many Anderson Valley wineries, and two virgin redwood preserves.

	Our guest cottage is clean, cozy and quiet with a queen bedroom, tub &amp; shower bathroom, small kitchen, sunny deck, and a comfy, sun-filled living room (with 2 additional day-beds). No other houses are in sight (besides the owners' next door), deer and wild turkeys frequent the meadow in front, nearby are extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and at night what you usually hear most is the distant ocean surf.

	Costs: For one or two people during the peak season (June-Sept and all holidays) it's $150 for the first night, $100 each additional night, and $650 per week. During the off-season (Oct-May, excluding holidays) it's $125 first night and $75 each additional night, or $500 per week. There is a 2-night minimum for holidays and peak season weekends. If there are more than two people, add a one-time fee of $25 per person, and in all cases add a 11% county bed tax. There are no cleaning or other fees. To reserve your dates, we request a check for half of the total sent immediately to Tom Wodetzki, 31901 Middle Ridge Road, Albion CA 95410.

	To keep the cottage fresh for all occupants, smoking and pets are not permitted. More photos can be sent to you upon request, and several photos of the property, garden and Mendocino Coast area can be viewed at the owners' home-exchange website: http://tw.mcn.org/HomeExchange/gallery.html Here are two web sites for general Mendocino area information: http://www.mendocinocoast.com/ &amp; http://www.mendocino.org/ And here are the Flickr sites of two local friends, both professional photographers, that have numerous beautiful photos of the area: http://flickr.com/photos/44548980@N00/sets/72157594318144257/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurieyork/sets/72157602384586810

	Note that we have video and DVD players and a TV set for films, but we do not get TV reception or cable. Cell phone reception is sketchy-- it works for some guests and not for others. There is a phone in the cottage (707-937-56020 in case you want to give it to family or friends, and which you may use for local calls and local internet link-up, altho it's dial-up and therefore slow. The cold Pacific Ocean 1 1/2 miles away keeps our summer daytime temp below 80 degrees-- 60 degrees during foggy days-- and nights can go as low as 45 in summer and 30 in winter. Bring layers. The cottage is heated centrally by a Monitor propane stove that you can adjust to your desired temperature. And we do provide bedding and towels.

	The check-in time is 3pm, and check-out is noon. We do not provide breakfasts or meals. The kitchen includes (besides stove, fridge, sink, etc) a coffee maker and tea kettle, plus sugar, salt &amp; pepper, and usually some teas. However, you need to bring your own coffee, cream and all the food you want to eat. Many restaurants are available in the area, and Albion village has a good little grocery store and deli. Driving directions are at the bottom.

	For more information or to book your stay, call 707-937-1113 or email: tw@mcn.org
	Wishing you an enjoyable time in the country,
		Tom &amp; Sharon

<title>{AUTOS &gt; MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Avoid the Highway to Hell With SafeRoadMaps.org</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/recreation/autos/magazines-and-e_zines/avoid-the-highway-to-hell-with-saferoadmaps-org-2008088646.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

It seems every town has a stretch of road with a reputation worse than Amy Winehouse and a Dateline NBC-worthy nickname. Inspired by tragedy, locals flood city halls with complaints about their own ?Deadman?s Curve,? ?Route of Ruin,? or ?Parkway of Peril,? demanding more stop signs and lower speed limits as statistics show drivers need to slow down, buckle up and stay sober. The folks at the University of Minnesota?s Center for Excellence in Rural Safety have a nifty website called SafeRoadMaps.org that lets drivers and worrywarts alike discover whether their hometown's danger zones are worthy of the full Stone Phillips treatment.

While the site provides reams of regional and statewide statistics about seatbelt and alcohol laws, by far the most morbid coolest feature is the ?Safe Street Map.? Combining Google Earth and federal traffic safety statistics, the Google Earth mashup map lets drivers read up on traffic fatalities near just about any address in the United States, each marked with its own pin. ?When you can visually see how many lives can be saved, it really changes how the public and policy makers see our roads,? said CERS Director Lee Munnich.

There is something stunning about seeing road fatalities mapped out on familiar routes, proving that cold hard statistics can drive a point home more effectively than any pre-prom MADD assembly.SafeRoadMaps.org is geared toward rural drivers, who tend to cover longer distances at higher speeds. According to the Federal Highway Administration, 57 percent of highway deaths take place on country roads, proving they are far more dangerous than any John Denver song suggests. When a user clicks on a marker representing an individual fatality, a pop-up box provides the cause of the accident and the age of the driver. Not surprisingly, a search of your faithful blogger's daily commute turned up several fatalities, most of them involving young people, speeding, alcohol, and unbuckled seatbelts.

CERS says the site is meant to teach people to ?make sensible adjustments? to their daily commutes. That, in turn, could result in fewer markers on future maps. There are links to Driving Skills for Life videos that parents can show their teenagers after seeing one pop-up box after another that reads, ?Fatality. 19 years old. No seatbelt worn.? Although the site is in its infancy, it already links to enough YouTube videos of news reports and crash aftermaths to terrify any parent. Only data from 2006 is searchable, but other years will be added soon.

Do the statistics from your daily commute match what you see on the roads? Taking an ?America?s Deadliest Roads? trip this summer? Let us know in the comments.

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; LODGING} - Quiet cottage on Mendocino coast in meadow, gardens. PHOTOS below. (mendocino county) $125 1bd</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/travel-and-tourism/lodging/quiet-cottage-on-mendocino-coast-in-meadow-gardens-20080746719.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Vacation rental on the Mendocino Coast, 3.5 hours north of San Francisco.

    OUR ONLY OPEN DATES now are: Aug 5-8, 24-30, &amp; Sept 1st on

<title>{AUTOS &gt; MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Ride the World's Best Motorcycle Roads</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/recreation/autos/magazines-and-e_zines/ride-the-world-s-best-motorcycle-roads-2008076019.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

The world's fastest roads may be arrow-straight stretches of pavement where any lead foot can haul ass, but motorcyclists know the world's best roads have curves, and lots of them.

It helps if the roads have great scenery and no cops, and smooth pavement is always a plus. Ideally, the curves go on for miles and miles, but even a short stretch of twisties can be exhilarating -- there's a 7-mile stretch of road in the Oakland Hills we could ride all day if we had to.

Anyone who's spent time on a motorcycle has a favorite road. Here are some of ours. Tell us some of yours.
Because we're in San Francisco, most of our faves are in NorCal. But we've spent
some time riding in the southeast, so we included a couple of sweet ones from
there, too.

Stewart's Point, Skagg's Spring Road between Stewart's Point and Geyserville, California. This road's got it all, from long smooth sweepers to tight bumpy bits with decreasing radius turns. It goes on for 43 miles, so it'll test your skills as well as your stamina.

Mines Road and San Antonio Road between Livermore and San Jose by way of Lick Observatory. This one's popular with local riders, and with good reason -- the curves just go on and on for the better part of 70 miles. There's very little traffic and rarely any cops, but it's farm country, so you'll occasionally come across a pickup truck or random cow in the road. Editor's note: After this post went up, we received an e-mail from an astronomer -- and rider -- at Lick who asks that fellow riders restrict their noise and speed within a few miles of the observatory so as not to disturb the astronomers, most of whom sleep during the day.

Highways 36, 3 and 299 from Huntsville Hydesville to Blue Lake, California. Highway 36 is legendary among NorCal riders who consider it 140 miles of riding Nirvana. Yes, it's that good. But to make it better, swing north at Highway 3 and then go west on 299. A stretch of this 208-mile ride through redwood country is called the Trinity Scenic Byway, and with good reason -- it's gorgeous.

Highway 129 between Chilohowee, Tennessee and Tapoca, North Carolina, also known as Deal's Gap and The Dragon. This one's obvious -- it's so popular there's a freakin' resort at one end of it - and we've always thought it a bit over-rated, but you really can't complain about any road that boasts 311 318 curves in 11 miles. Be sure to check out the Tree of Shame and the bulletin board full of photos.

Highway 15 between Sutton and Valley Head, West Virginia. A lot of east coast riders call this one of the best roads you'll find. Tight turns give way to long sweepers as the road skirts Monongahela National Forest, with amazing scenery the entire way. The road starts in nowhere and ends in nowhere, but then, the best roads always do.

Share your favorite road with us -- submit your fave by clicking "add" on the map. Create
start and end points, then trace the route by clicking on the icon on the start marker. The road can be anywhere in the world.

<td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Blog.Wired.Com</span> -

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Some douche steals Ian Curtis' (of Joy Division) headstone</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/some-douche-steals-ian-curtis-of-joy-division-headstone-2008075957.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain"> The headstone marking the final resting place of deceased Joy Division singer Ian Curtis is suddenly missing. Whoever stole it is a total douche, and deserves a special place in hell where screaming emo demons torture them with burns from a thousand clove cigarettes, poke them with a million blunt eyeliner applicators, and blind their eyes with painfully asymmetrical hair extensions for all eternity. The grave marker, wherever it is now, reads: "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80" and the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Here is a story in the Times UK, and above is a music video by Jonathan Beamish for the earliest recorded version of "Love Will Tear us Apart," produced as a John Peel Session for the BBC in 1979 (jesus! 30 years ago, wow)....
