If you've been screwing around online at your desk instead of doing work, you've probably already seen the lists of "best back to school cars" from Edmunds, MSN, and Kelley Blue Book (KBB). As expected, all of these cars are kind of inexpensive and relatively safe, because your kid is going to total it. According to Jack Nerad, executive market analyst for KBB, their recommendations reflect that "vehicles are better built and better equipped than ever before, and there are a variety of body-style options available to suit the needs of any parent, and inevitably satisfy the wants of any teen."

Of course, you probably can't afford one of these rides, and your kids definitely can't, which means they're going to end up driving something not on any of these lists. Since we're realists, we're going to report on what the kids are actually driving these days, which amounts to a list of what not to buy. Check out our picks and tell us about your first ride after the jump.First up is the ever-popular Grandma's Car. It's only sensible to give an inexperienced driver the keys to an aging boat that sat in a garage without proper maintenance. These Regals and New Yorkers have more padding on the roof than on the dash, and the only airbags are the broken ones in the rear suspension. Despite obvious safety flaws, Grandma's Car is a best pick for parents who want their teens to wait until marriage: There's no worse gamekiller than finding a receipt for Metamucil between those bench seat cushions. Bonus points if the opera lights still work.

Next is This Was My Mom's Car but She Got a New One (TWMMCBSGANO), usually driven by the son or daughter of the popular girl you used to hate in high school. Whether it's an RX330 or a 5-series, the driver's name isn't on the title, and it's paid off. Though it might be the safest car on the road, don't let your kid ride with the friend lucky enough to drive it: it'll probably end up wrapped around a tree with all 10 airbags deployed. Bonus points the newscaster reporting the crash mentions the age of the driver and the name of the car with disdain and jealousy ("a seventeen year old driving a 2005 Land Rover is in serious condition tonight...)

Every high school parking lot has the Fixer Upper, also known as The Project Car, a 18 to 20 year old canvas in a constant state of upgrade and repair. Driven by budding automotive enthusiasts who usually end up carpooling, this choice transcends culture and geography. Kids in Arkansas will Bondo lifted F-150s which predate their birth, while kids in LA will lower their carbon-fiber-hooded Accords. If your kid buys one of these off Craigslist, you're going to be cleaning a lot of oil off your driveway. Bonus points if your kid sells it to one of his friends for $200 after blowing the head gasket.

Nothing says "my parents only helped me buy a car because they want me out of the house" more than the Total Piece of Crap. It isn't fast, it isn't safe, and it probably isn't properly insured -- but it gets kids whose parents hate them to their seven hour shift as a dishwasher. No after school activities for you, mister. Your parents had you for the tax benefits and started charging you rent in 6th grade to pay for their yearly Caribbean vacation. Sure, you learn responsibility, but you don't learn calculus because you're too busy working to pay for your car so you can get to work to pay for your car. Get used to your Dodge Shadow, buddy -- this is the first of many disappointments in your life. Bonus points for every band bumpersticker plastered over a rust spot.

Finally, there's the Daddy Bought Me a Car! Tiny, ugly, and no older than a 2006, these cars were surprise 16th birthday presents from parents who know nothing about cars. You know, the sort of folks who buy something off the lot on their first trip to the dealer? The only option you're going to find in one of these is an automatic transmission, as the clueless parents got talked into skipping optional ABS and side airbags. Expect to see an insurance claim on one of these during the first month of ownership. The good news is that carmakers have stopped churning out a lot of this crap. With the demise of the Cavalier, Neon, and Escort, parents can purchase much better inexpensive choices such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai Sonata. Bonus points if there are any bumperstickers or license plate frames that feature the word "princess."

Today on Boing Boing Gadgets — a site which we suspect you'll enjoy reading even if you often find gadgets tire- and irksome (so do we!) — we spotted these top-notch crank-powered greeting cards from Hallmark, of all people; hacked sunglasses that block CCTV cameras; a book about making LEGO weapons; a human-powered party bike, complete with lights and sound system; and the Venture Bros. era-appropriate love of fancy chairs. A team of Israeli art students made a wooden coffee grinder shaped like a cuddly tumor; a crappy newspaper made a crime spree by stupid kids the fault of Grand Theft Auto; ICANN unveiled a new plan for top level domains, putting me only $100k away from owning http://cluster.fuck. Rob documented BBG's first word coinage; John exposed a traumatic misunderstanding of the nature of lumberjack hibernation; I got off my ass and started rounding up deals again. One of Pixar's own made a cute Wall•E in LEGO. (And I'm going to see it tonight. I'm pumped!) AT&T may actually be adding MMS to iPhone, which for the first time allowed people on the internet to express their opinion about Apple. Nokia released some new phones, which for the second time allowed people on the internet to express their opinion about Apple. Then there were the sexy stormtrooper boots, our enthusiasm over which only slighted muted by the acknowledgement that every stormtrooper was a clone, then brought back into vibrant excitement when reader Rob Cockerham invented the term "Fett footish." There was a Steampunk sonic rifle. Despite indications to the contrary, use of the term did not cause the internet to implode. Yet. Helio, a company that thought it could build a business by buying expensive phones and selling them to poor teens has — surprisingly — been sold for scrap. Perhaps they'd have been better selling buckets for making dogsicles. Once again, someone made a dot-matrix toaster, but only in their mind. (Hey, MAKE:RS! You can do this!) World of Warcraft added a real-world security dongle to protect you from gold farmers stealing your account. Yahoo hiked domain prices in a fairly scummy manner. And someone made a lamp from dishes which looks an awful like the stuff I used to make on the lathe when I was sequestered in wood shop for seventh-grade homeroom....

This grand Scandinavian mansion can sleep 29 comfortably but is best suited for eight to ten couples or five large families plus kids. Each bedroom is uniquely furnished and has its own name, on a custom-cast brass plate next to its door. (Rooms are not "themed".) The main suites and additional bedrooms can be used in various combinations, but here is one common way that large families arrange themselves:

"Hallingdal" is a private suite, the only bedroom on the bottom floor, with its own spacious travertine-tiled bathroom, custom-built queen bed, separate living room & big-screen TV. The two couches in Hallingdal's living room both fold out into queen-sized beds, which we can make up for you if you notify us in advance.

"Mor og Far" is the master bedroom, adjacent to the kitchen and overlooking the driveway. It has a king bed, and the floor of the custom-tiled shower is hydronically heated. Across the hall is "Oden", a large bedroom with two full beds which uses the hall bathroom (newly remodeled, the most beautiful one in the house I believe, though others argue for their own favorite bathrooms). These are the only bedrooms on the main floor, although the two comfy couches and six La-Z-Boy recliners in the Library are sometimes pressed into service.

"Norse" is a large bedroom with a king bed and a cozy private bathroom (the smallest of the nine bathrooms in the house). The unusually high exposed-beam vaulted ceiling is a favorite with guests. It is the first bedroom on the second floor, right at the top of the stairs by the antique and operable player piano. All the bedrooms on the second floor have their own balcony access, except Viking 1 and 2. Norse overlooks Edgewood Canyon: the top of Heavenly's East Peak is clearly visible from the Norse windows and balcony. This bedroom has plenty of room for a playpen, and for a child to build a nest on the floor. It does not naturally adjoin other bedrooms.

"Grandma" is a smaller, more elegant bedroom (containing some of my grandmother's antique furniture and decor), with a full bed and its own cozy half-bath and private balcony and views of the wooded Sierras. As it is right next door to the Vikings and across the hall from Valhalla, it can make a "suite" with either of those. It is also happy to stand on its own.

"Valhalla" is the grandest bedroom/bathroom suite in the house. Its king bed, fine antique furnishings, cozy walk-in closet and separate shower/toilet room for the bathroom, make Valhalla the "presidential suite" of this mansion. As it is right across the hall from the single-bed Grandma and dual-bed Vikings, that entire hallway can be considered a four-bedroom, six/seven-bed, two-and-a-half-bath suite.

"Viking 1 & 2": These are mentioned together, and share a name, because you must pass through Viking 1 (two full beds) to reach Viking 2 (another two beds plus trundle bed can make 3 full beds). This is an ideal arrangement for parents with toddlers: Viking 2 is also the official toddler-playroom of the house, stocked with brightly colored toys (but you'll need to bring your own favorites too), a toddler-sized table and chairs, and even a denim toddler-sized couch that folds out into a bed for one toddler. We hope to add another one of those toddler couches soon. Note that there is no balcony access from Viking 1 or 2: this is no accident. There are, however, beautiful views of Lake Tahoe, Round Hill, and Kingsbury Grade. The Vikings' bath is at the end of the hall, just steps from Viking 1's door: the hall bath is ideally suited for children and infants.

Up the stairs from the Vikings is the sleeping loft, which, of course, is called "Loftet". It has shelves full of books for children and teens, six full beds and a full bath: the curious ceiling angles make Loftet's bathroom odd but functional, a fun curiosity for kids and teens.

"Monk's Cell" is a separate bedroom at the end of the sleeping loft. True to its name, it is cozy and austere, just big enough for a full bed, built-in bookshelves, a small writing desk, a bureau and a robe hook. (bring your own monk's robe) Its single window looks out on the eastern Sierras and the Lake. It has private balcony access too, the way any monk would love: via a brass ladder under the eaves.

The house is in a secluded canyon off Kingsbury Grade, a convenient 6-minute drive from Heavenly Valley's Boulder Base. Boulder Lodge is Heavenly's main Nevada-side full-service ski school for toddlers through adults, skiing and snowboarding. A brand-new high-speed quad chair gets you up the mountain fast; the Nevada side is locally known as the uncrowded side of Heavenly, with the driest powder, most convenient parking and least busy lodges.

Sfbay.Craigslist.Org - This grand Scandinavian mansion can sleep 29 comfortably but is best suited for eight to ten couples or five large families plus kids.
