<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - How Dan Kaminsky broke and fixed DNS</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/how-dan-kaminsky-broke-and-fixed-dns-2008123241.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Wired's Joshua A Davis has a great profile of my pal Dan Kaminsky's work on discovering and then helping to fix a net-crashing DNS bug earlier this year. Davis really captures the excitement of discovering a major security flaw and the complex web of personal, professional and technical complications that come to bear when you're trying to disclose the research in a way that minimizes harm to the net. Dan does a lot of fun security-related stuff that doesn't get talked about in public. There's this one thing he does -- But that would be telling. The next morning, Kaminsky strode to the front of the conference room at Microsoft headquarters before Vixie could introduce him or even welcome the assembled heavy hitters. The 16 people in the room represented Cisco Systems, Microsoft, and the most important designers of modern DNS software. Vixie was prepared to say a few words, but Kaminsky assumed that everyone was there to hear what he had to say. After all, he'd earned the spotlight. He hadn't sold the discovery to the Russian mob. He hadn't used it to take over banks. He hadn't destroyed the Internet. He was actually losing money on the whole thing: As a freelance computer consultant, he had taken time off work to save the world. In return, he deserved to bask in the glory of discovery. Maybe his name would be heralded around the world. Kaminsky started by laying out the timeline. He had discovered a devastating flaw in DNS and would explain the details in a moment. But first he wanted the group to know that they didn't have much time. On August 6, he was going to a hacker convention in Las Vegas, where he would stand before the world and unveil his amazing discovery. If there was a solution, they'd better figure it out by then. But did Kaminsky have the goods? DNS attacks were nothing new and were considered difficult to execute. The most practical attack?widely known as cache poisoning?required a hacker to submit data to a DNS server at the exact moment that it updated its records. If he succeeded, he could change the records. But, like sperm swimming toward an egg, whichever packet got there first?legitimate or malicious?locked everything else out. If the attacker lost the race, he would have to wait until the server updated again, a moment that might not come for days. And even if he timed it just right, the server required a 16-bit ID number. The hacker had a 1-in-65,536 chance of guessing it correctly. It could take years to successfully compromise just one domain. The experts watched as Kaminsky opened his laptop and connected the overhead projector. He had created a "weaponized" version of his attack on this vulnerability to demonstrate its power. A mass of data flashed onscreen and told the story. In less than 10 seconds, Kaminsky had compromised a server running BIND 9, Vixie's DNS routing software, which controls 80 percent of Internet traffic. It was undeniable proof that Kaminsky had the power to take down large swaths of the Internet. Secret Geek A-Team Hacks Back, Defends Worldwide Web (Photo: John Keatley)...

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; REAL ESTATE} - ### Woodshop and Welding Studio for share ### (berkeley)</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/business-and-economy/real-estate/woodshop-and-welding-studio-for-share-berkeley-20081172737.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Hi,

Starting in December, there will be 1 slot for a part-time or full-time woodworker. So far, we have a mixture of craftspeople, hobbyists, woodworkers, and artists who need a full wood/metal shop. The woodshop is located upstairs (~1200sf), and has an additional assembly/project storage area, and some sheet goods storage. There is some storage space included in the rent on pallet racks and in cabinets upstairs, and more on pallet racks in the rear, available for a fee. There is also a "finish" room (not zoned for HVLP spraying), but good for hand finishes.

Tools so far:

2 Table saws (1 of them is a Sawstop, check out www.sawstop.com), 18" band saw, drill press, 2 jointers, a panel saw, chop/miter saw, 3 planers, 2 router tables, floor and bench sanders, shop air, some hand tools for share, and a Pallet Jack. All machinery usage is shared, but please have some of your own hand tools. There is some dust collection hooked up and more coming.

And several slots available for the welding and metal-working studio-share with several other part-time metal-workers (furniture, sculpture, and signage). There is a 16'x16' welding area and a 16'x10' flexible garage area with a roll-up door, both with concrete floors. There is some storage space included on shelving in the shop, and more on pallet racks in the rear, available for a fee. This is a communal arrangement meaning that some tools brought in would be for share with other respectful metal-workers.

Currently we have 1 mig welder, 1 arc welder, a CNC plasma table, oxy-act torch/tanks, drill press, break/shear, chop saw, grinders, etc.

And there is an office where you can meet with clients, a nice kitchenette area(part of the showroom), 1 slop and 1 nice bathroom, and an attractive furniture showroom display space. The showroom is mostly full now, after participating in the East Bay Open Studios. It isn't zoned for retail but will be open by appointment only, or for seasonal open studios. If you are working in our shop(FT or PT), there will be a commission of %25 for sales made in the showroom during our open studios.

It is a unique opportunity to have a shop and showroom area in the same space. Although it is located in an industrial section of W. Berkeley, it is right around the corner from the 4th St. retail area, and we get a lot of traffic, especially during the Holidays.

The rental rates will be determined on an individual basis depending on use of facilities, schedule, storage needs, tool usage, tools brought in, use of office, etc. But plan on $250-400 for PT and $400-600 for FT. Plus a share of utilities, and alarm ($40-60/mo). Starting costs will be 1st month's rent and utilities, plus a $100 deposit. It is in a (relatively) safe area and there is an alarm system installed. Access will be 24/7.

Please call Joshua at(510) 666-1030 to chat and arrange a time to see the space. More photos available, just ask. Or check out www.joshuatreefurniture.com for more info.

<title>{INTERNET &gt; W} - The Faces of Mechanical Turk</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/computers/internet/on-the-web/weblogs/personal/w/the-faces-of-mechanical-turk-20081152121.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">When you experiment with Amazon's Mechanical Turk, it feels like magic. You toss 500 questions into the ether, and the answers instantly start rolling in from anonymous workers around the world. It was great for getting work done, but who are these people? I've seen the demographics, but that was too abstract for me.

Last week, I started a new Turk experiment to answer two questions: what do these people look like, and how much does it cost for someone to reveal their face?

Answer #1. This is what Mechanical Turk looks like (click for full-size):

Answer #2. About $0.50.

Results

Here's my original request:

Upload a photo of yourself holding a handwritten sign that says "I Turk for ...", filling out why you turk. For example, "I Turk for Cash," "I Turk for My Kids," "I Turk to Kill Time," or whatever else you like. Be honest, be funny, be whatever you like.

As a good faith gesture, here's my photo.

If you have a webcam, you can simply go to Cameroid to snap a photo from your web browser, download the JPG, and upload it below. (Don't worry if the text is backwards, I can fix that myself.) DON'T provide any identifiable information, like your name or email, since that's a violation of MTurk policy.

The result will be used in a collage that can be found on my personal weblog, http://waxy.org. By uploading your image and accepting payment for the image, you give permission to me, Andy Baio, to use your image in all forms and media for any lawful purposes. (That's just cover-my-ass language. I'm almost certainly only going to restrict it to this one project.) The collage will show up there shortly after the HIT is complete. Thanks, everybody!

I started the task at $.05, but only two people responded in the first 24 hours. (And one of those was Joshua Schachter, who I'd told about the project.) Clearly, that was too low, so I increased it to $.25, receiving only eight submissions in 48 hours. (For reference, all 500 of my Girl Talk tasks were done in about an hour.) Increasing it to $.50 got me 20 more submissions in about 48 hours, after which it started to drop off quickly. I wasn't about to give dollar bills to random people for their photos, so I ended the experiment there. People aren't willing to give up their anonymity for cheap.

The final results: 30 people total &mdash; 10 women, 20 men. Almost all were white, mostly in their 20s and 30s. 21 said they turked for money, 9 for fun or boredom.

Thanks for pulling back the curtain, Turkers. </summary>

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Kinks reunion documentary-in-progress</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/kinks-reunion-documentary-in-progress-20081181525.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Joshua Glenn says: My friend Geoff Edgers, the Boston Globe's arts reporter, is spending all his free time on a personal mission: to reunite The Kinks. ("I've stood by helplessly as countless crappy rock bands have gotten back together -- Styx, Flock of Seagulls, The fucking Eagles!") Local movie director-producer Robert Patton-Spruill is documenting Geoff's quixotic efforts, but I haven't been paying much attention -- because it seemed crazy, to me. But check out this excerpt from "Do It Again," their documentary in progress. Geoff talks to Kinks bassist Pete Quaife, who compares the band to the movie The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly; he gets Sting's endorsement, and the two of them duet on The Kinks' "Set Me Free"; and Hollywood lovely Zooey Deschanel says she thinks the band secretly wants to get back together. (By the way, I used this little trick to embed the YouTube video in higher resolution than normal.)...
