Like Slade and spice-"enhanced" liqueurs, leopard print is one of those things that for 364 days of the year is obviously an assault on the senses, but, come Christmas, is perceived as "jolly", "festive" and "a bit of fun". "A sensible but chic cover-up for a Christmas party," as one current fashion magazine would have it. (Perhaps I should add that such advice is aimed only at the female of the species. Not even Christmas can stop leopard print turning a man into anything other than Jonathan Ross.)Perhaps it is the association between Christmas and soap operas that explains why dressing like Bet Lynch to mark the birth of the Messiah suddenly makes perfect sense. True, Christmas is not known for subtlety on any level, from the food, to TV schedules to the fondness for tinsel and sequins. But dressing like something in a David Attenborough documentary does not make you look like animalistic sexuality unleashed. It does not even make you look like a 60s wannabe starlet (and that comment is directed at yoo-hoo, Madame Kate Moss). It makes you look like a half-cut barmaid, desperately hoping for a bit of mistletoe. And as everyone knows, no one from a soap opera has a happy ending at Christmas.Fashionguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - BBC Trust criticises Jonathan Ross over lewd comment to Gwyneth Paltrow

The BBC Trust today criticised a further incident of bad language involving Jonathan Ross, but said his three month suspension without pay was adequate punishment for the "Sachsgate" scandal. In its final report on the row that engulfed the BBC last month, and which led to the resignation of two Radio 2 executives and comedian Russell Brand, the trust also said that BBC management should investigate another incident involving Brand on Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles' show. The trust said bad language in an episode of Ross's pre-recorded BBC1 chatshow, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, in which the presenter told Hollywood actor Gwyneth Paltrow he "would fuck her" was "gratuitous and unnecessarily offensive". BBC management had originally reviewed the show, broadcast in May this year, and cleared it for broadcast. However, the trust today said it disagreed with that judgment, adding that the comment was made in an "overly sexual way" and that it had upheld a number of complaints made about the edition of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. The trust also asked BBC management to investigate comments that Brand made on Moyles's show about dancer Georgina Baillie, who became embroiled in the Sachsgate affair after Ross and Brand left lewd messages about her on her grandfather Andrew Sachs' answerphone.Moyles and Brand had a conversation live on Radio 1 at 8.23am on October 21, three days after the offensive messages were broadcast on Radio 2 - but before the Sachsgate affair had blown up into a major crisis for the BBC.Brand told Moyles he had met Baillie and said he had "met her brains out".BBC trustee Richard Tait said today that the trust had taken the view that the comment was referring to Baillie's private life. The trust said it was down to BBC management to decide if any further sanctions were necessary over this incident. In its report on the Sachsgate row, the trust said the calls made to Sachs were "grossly offensive" and that there was no justification for broadcasting them. The trust added that the material broadcast on Brand's Radio 2 show on Saturday October 18 was a "deplorable intrusion" into the private lives of Sachs and Baillie. There was no "editorial justification" and no "informed consent obtained" for airing the messages, the trust added.Tait said there had been three failures by BBC management over the decision to broadcast the pre-recorded messages - failure to exercise editorial control, to follow established compliance systems and a failure of judgment in taking editorial decisions. But he added the trust considered the BBC's response to the controversy to be appropriate. The BBC Trust chairman, Sir Michael Lyons, said the corporation's regulatory and governance body would not be taking any further action against Ross."We have underlined very clearly that it is not the job of the trust to make decisions about the terms and conditions of performers or the sanctions that are applied to them when they are found to be wanting," Lyons added."We are very clear that the director general has taken the right action with respect to Jonathan Ross," he said."The common issue is not who the performers are. The common issue is editorial failings ... the failings here are in the role of the BBC as the publisher of the material."Lyons said that the offending material transmitted on Brand's Radio 2 show should not have been recorded in the first instance and in the BBC Trust's view should then have been edited out before the broadcast. "The failings we have discussed this morning are serious but they are being addressed," he added.Lyons said that the BBC "needs to learn some lessons" but it usually got it right. He described it as a "disappointing and dismal episode", but said the director general, Mark Thompson, and his team had responded constructively.Lyons also said it was "not rocket science" to have predicted that putting Ross in the same studio as Brand could lead to trouble. "You could have predicted a risky situation," he added.· To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email editor@mediaguardian.co.uk or phone 020 7239 9857.
Chariot racing is to come to the Dome. Sorry, the O2 Arena, or what was once the great tented home of the embarrassing and largely forgotten Millennium Experience. The announcement was made days after the opening of the Westfield shopping mall, the most ambitious yet of London's public playpens for those in need of brash and glittering entertainment on a mammoth scale.Like the Millennium Experience, malls are a successor to the unofficial Roman policy of doling out "bread and circuses" (or "games" or "entertainment", depending on how you translate Juvenal's Latin mockery). Free bread, or wheat, and cheap entertainment in public arenas and imperial baths did their bit to keep the population of a vast, sprawling, noisy, cosmopolitan and hugely energetic city passive. London, a vast, sprawling, noisy, cosmopolitan and hugely energetic city, is easily seen as a slightly cloudy ancient Rome. It is hard to hear about chariot races at the Dome and not think of Juvenal's jibe.Whereas, sniped Decimus Junius Juvenalis (AD55-127), responsible republican Romans had once taken their civic responsibilities seriously, now they "meddle no more and long eagerly for just two things" - panem et circensesHe was thinking of cheap seats for sensationally violent games in the Colosseum and thrillingly dangerous chariot races in the Circus Maximus. From next autumn, the German producer Franz Abraham will be entertaining us with a live-action version of the Hollywood epic Ben Hur to mark its 50th anniversary. Sets will be designed by Mark Fisher, the man behind the determinedly populist British contribution to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics - itself a product of "bread and circuses" thinking. In true Colosseum style, the show promises "100" performing animals. Horses. Camels. Eagles. Falcons. And "chickens". There will also be five "quadrigas", or four-horsed chariots, belting around the place. Londoners are promised a "high level of artistry" and, doubtless, everything will be done in the best possible taste. In 2000, I wrote a little book called London: Bread and Circuses. My feeling was that recent governments had assumed that Londoners have been so happy shopping, eating and being entertained that they have been careless of how their buses and trains, their schools and hospitals, are financed and run. But they do care, and are well aware that peace offerings such as the lavish millennium buildings, sponsored by a lottery and global corporations, are a poor substitute for a creaking infrastructure. Bread and circuses are not enough. With his love of ancient Rome, Boris Johnson must be aware of the ways in which Londoners, and the British in general, have since 2000 been spoon-fed with ever more gimcrack and large-scale entertainments, whether in the guise of the Westfield shopping mall - which the mayor himself declared open - the 2012 Olympics, or now, going the whole sus (Latin for hog), chariot racing in the Dome, London's Colosseum.Chariot racing in North Greenwich might well be enjoyable. It is easy to imagine Frankie Dettori jostling with Lewis Hamilton at the reins, interspersed with such crowd-pleasers as Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand being fed to the lions. Equally, it is clear that we have come both a long way and nowhere at all since the heyday of ancient Rome, and Londinium. Of course, there is something in us that thrills, guiltily or not, to gladiator fights, public executions - the biggest crowd-pullers in 18th and 19th century London - football games, motor racing and the Christmas sales, but chariot racing in the Dome takes the panis biscoctusJonathan Glancey is the Guardian's architecture critic jonathan.glancey@guardian.co.ukShopping tripsLondonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
