<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Sept. 8, 1966: Liftoff for the Starship Enterprise</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/sept-8-1966-liftoff-for-the-starship-enterprise-20080951513.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">1966: Star Trek makes its network television debut.

Given the cultural impact and enormous franchise spawned by the original Star Trek series, it's hard to believe that the show lasted just three seasons -- 80 episodes -- and was canceled by NBC in 1969 because of low ratings.

But if network numbers-crunching and the short-sightedness of advertising sponsors doomed it, Star Trek's long-term survival, evidenced by its ongoing syndication, not to mention the numerous TV spinoffs and feature-length films it inspired, is both a vindication of and a tribute to its creator and executive producer, Gene Roddenberry.

And Roddenberry was a guy badly in need of vindication. His career began promisingly: Roddenberry wrote scripts for some popular 1950s TV shows like Naked City, Highway Patrol and Have Gun, Will Travel. But the original Star Trek TV series, as well as the first feature-length film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, were conspicuous successes in an otherwise unremarkable and often problematic association with Hollywood.

The commercial success of the first Star Trek movie would spawn other films and a new TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, although Roddenberry's involvement with those projects was diminished. But if his relationship with the industry had its rough patches, his reputation as a futurist and visionary -- which begins and ends with Star Trek -- is assured.

The original show's most visionary aspects were social, not scientific, and that had everything to do with the times. The country was in turmoil, embroiled in Vietnam and the growing civil rights movement. Roddenberry said later that these events influenced many of the themes, as well as the multicultural makeup of the crew.

Roddenberry remained in demand on the lecture circuit to the end of his life, speaking not only at universities but at some other pretty significant places, too, including the Smithsonian Institution and NASA.

Star Trek's impact on popular culture is matched by only a handful of other television shows, and surpassed by precious few.

The original cast members on the USS Enterprise's 1966 flight deck became household names: Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner), First Officer Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Communications Officer Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Helmsman Hikaru Sulu (George Takei). Navigator Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig), who joined the cast in the second season to give the Russians their due in space, was also a popular character.

Phrases like "Beam me up, Scotty" and "Live long and prosper" and "to boldly go ?" entered the lexicon, and the show's cult following, kept visibly alive by the numerous and rollicking Star Trek conventions, remains strong to this day. An 11-foot model of the starship Enterprise is on display at the Smithsonian.

On the tech front, the communicator used by Enterprise crew members is said to have been the inspiration for the flip-open cellphone.

The original pilot episode for the series, "The Cage," was filmed in 1964 but not aired in its entirety until 1988. After the original pilot was rejected by NBC, "The Cage" was chopped up and heavily edited, and eventually shown under the title "The Menagerie" during Star Trek's three-year run.

Nimoy's Mr. Spock was the only character from the pilot to later appear in the TV series, although he was most un-Spock like, showing a lot more emotion than your average Vulcan. In the pilot, the Enterprise was commanded by Capt. Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter).

Because of all the spinoffs that resulted from it, Roddenberry's Star Trek is often referred to as The Original Series. For a lot of us who came of age watching Shatner chewing on all that alien scenery and nibbling on all those alien necks, it was The Only Series.

<title>{AUTOS &gt; MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - James Bond Gets Hip to Alt Fuels</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/recreation/autos/magazines-and-e_zines/james-bond-gets-hip-to-alt-fuels-20081146921.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">
 In addition to generally kicking ass, James Bond is famous for his refined taste, his penchant for seduction and, of course, his bad-ass cars. The tradition continues in the lastest Bond flick, but for the first time in 46 years, our hero goes -- dare we say it? -- green.

Our favorite spy spends a fair amount of time in Quantum of Solace behind the wheel of a sexy Aston Martin DBS -- which, as the photo shows, takes a beating -- that produces 510 horsepower, tops out at 191 mph and gets 13 mpg. It continues a fine tradition for Astons that began with the awesome DB5 in Goldfinger and continued through some of the best Bond films, including Casino Royale.

But Bond tempers his gas-guzzling ways by getting behind the wheel of a hydrogen fuel cell Ford Edge, and FoMoCo's fuel-sipping Ka makes a cameo as well. Neither one of them can turn into a submarine or sprout wings and fly, so they won't make our list of the 10 coolest Bond cars ever. But it's great to see eco-friendly cars getting screen time in a blockbuster film.
Bond makes a getaway in an Edge that belongs to villain Dominic Greene, an environmentalist -- Greene. Get it? -- who leads a criminal gang called Quantum. Greene has a fleet of them, and they're all powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen being much harder to get in the real world than the fictional one, the Fords in the flick don't actually run on the stuff, but we'll overlook that.

You probably don't know what a Ka is unless you live in Europe because Ford -- for reasons that elude us -- doesn't sell it in the U.S. It's a sweet little compact that gets upwards of 38 mpg and is exactly the kind of car Ford, indeed all of the Big Three, should be cranking out in big numbers here in the states. Its cameo on the silver screen makes us more hopeful that there's some truth to reports it may soon be available in America.

The Edge and the Ka aren't going to win any beauty contests, especially against the DBS, but it's definitely time for a new generation of Bond cars. We know 007 has a license to kill, but does he have a license to pollute? Besides, green tech is cool. If Q can develop a car that flies -- not to mention figure out how to squeeze surface-to-air missiles and six cup holders into a BMW Z8 -- he sure as hell can figure out how to make an electric car get decent range or create a plug-in hybrid that isn't crazy expensive. Heck - he might even be able to find an efficient enough way to generate the hydrogen needed to keep the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE going. And it's not as if Britain's Secret Intelligence Service can't afford a few Mercedes S 400 hybrids or Tesla Roadsters at $100,000 apiece

It's time for Bond to realize that in a world where climate change and dwindling resources are existential threats as grave as terrorism, the
cars he drives are as important as the villains he fights. Use the Reddit widget below to let us know what kind of car you'd like to see Bond drive.

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Gallery: The 10 Coolest James Bond Cars Ever</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/gallery-the-10-coolest-james-bond-cars-ever-20081192418.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">: Sweet cars and amazing, if improbable, car chases have been essential elements of James Bond movies since the series began in 1962. The tradition continues in Quantum of Solace, which finds our favorite superspy behind the wheel of a hot Aston Martin DBS and &#151; in a nod to these eco-conscious times &#151; a Ford Edge that runs on hydrogen (in the film, if not in real life). But it takes more than a fuel cell to make the list of the 10 coolest Bond cars ever.

Left:

Aston Martin DB5

The quintessential Bond car appeared in Goldfinger, and it is both the most famous Bond car and one of the most iconic vehicles in the history of film. In addition to gorgeous lines and stunning speed, Bond's DB5 featured machine guns, a bulletproof shield, radar and that über-cool ejector seat that could villains flying at the push of a button.
: This one's tricky because Bentley never produced a car called the Mark IV. Ian Fleming made that up. Bond drove a 1933 Bentley convertible with an Amherst-Villiers supercharger in the novel Casino Royale. Various Bentleys have appeared in Bond films, including From Russia With Love, in which our hero seduces Miss Sylvia Trench behind the wheel of a 1930 Bentley Derby similar to the one in this photo by Flicker user starpitti.
: The Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me is almost as famous as the DB5, if only because it could turn into a submarine at the flick of a switch. The car featured surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes and depth charges, all of which we find amazing given the shaky reliability of the electrical systems in British cars.
: Strictly speaking, this wasn't Bond's car. It was driven by his assistant, Aki, in You Only Live Twice. But it makes the list because it was chock-full of cool gadgets ? including a television, a cordless phone and a voice-activated stereo ? that are commonplace today but the stuff of science fiction in 1967. Toyota built a GT without a roof because Sean Connery was too tall for the coupe.
: Aston Martin returned to Bond's fleet in 2002 after the spy's brief dalliance with BMW in the late 1990s. The Vanquish that appeared in Die Another Day came with an ejector seat and a cloaking device that rendered the car invisible. We prefer the more muscular and understated DBS in Casino Royale because it's a better match for Daniel Craig's darker, more brooding Bond.
: Yes, Bond drove a Mustang, albeit briefly, in Diamonds are Forever, and he looked almost as cool as Steve McQueen did driving his 'stang in Bullitt. Connery took the Mach 1 on a wild ride through Vegas, getting up on two wheels to squeeze through an alley. The film editors weren't so skilled: The car is shown entering the alley on one set of wheels and emerging on the other.
: Pierce Brosnan drove the convertible Beemer in The World Is Not Enough, but it was a BMW in name only. The Z8 was still a prototype when filming started, so the film featured a Cobra kit car wearing BMW skin. The 2CV couldn't outrun its own belching plume of exhaust, so the car in For Your Eyes Only was tricked out with a hotter engine, a modified transmission and a reworked frame. <td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Www.Wired.Com</span> - : Sweet cars and amazing, if improbable, car chases have been essential elements of James Bond movies since the series began in 1962.

We're still not sure where Q found room for the surface-to-air missiles, let alone the six cup holders, but now we know where they put the movie camera.: Bond stole this car from a dealership showroom to make an escape in The Man With the Golden Gun, making a spectacular corkscrew jump over a canal to elude his pursuers. The stunt was planned with help from a supercomputer at Cornell University, and it is the only time in history an AMC Hornet has ever looked cool.: This Whyte Industries jobby appeared in Diamonds Are Forever. It's a moon buggy. 'Nuff said.: Another Bond car that wasn't what it appeared to be. The 2CV couldn't outrun its own belching plume of exhaust, so the car in For Your Eyes Only was tricked out with a hotter engine, a modified transmission and a reworked frame. It still had trouble outrunning the humble Peugeots ? Peugeots ? pursuing it, so Bond had to resort to skilled driving and good luck to make his escape.
