It used to be Two Jags who growled around Westminster in his limos. Now our politicians compete for the nickname Two Priuses. Cabinet Office minister Tom Watson has roared ahead in the eco-conscious motoring race by squeezing his red boxes into the first ever ministerial Mini. But the new big cabinet split is whether to choose a Jag or a Prius as an official car. Young cabinet ministers, such as James Purnell, Douglas Alexander and Ed Miliband, happily admit they use the petrol-electric Toyota, as does Hilary Benn, the environment secretary, and Hazel Blears. Three other cabinet members, including John Denham, also drive Honda hybrids. However, the seven-strong Prius group is still outnumbered by the nine cabinet ministers who take up the other official ministerial car option - the Jaguar XJ.You can bet those cabinet members who refuse to identify what they drive "for security reasons" use a Jaguar. Gordon Brown recently promised to swap his armour-plated Jaguar XJ limousine for an electric car but Peter Mandelson is an unrepentant Jag man. "I insisted on being driven around Brussels in a British-made Jaguar and I'm still being driven around in a British Jaguar now," the new lord told a Commons committee this week. The Jag option may not be the eco-nightmare it was in Prescott's day. The diesel XJ bought by the government has been named the greenest luxury car for two years running. It is claimed the 2.7 model can travel 1,000 miles on a single tank of fuel although the government's official figures clock its CO2 emissions at 209g/km (more than double the 104g/km for the Prius and Mini diesel).Despite politicians watching their emissions - the ministerial average is 140.71g/km - the number of cars in the ministerial fleet has actually risen from 82 in 2005 to 87 today, including several Mondeos and Vectras. But the humblest motoring ministers must be the three cabinet members - including culture secretary Andy Burnham - who have stuck with a relic of the days when Brit...

We've been nervous ever since Jaguar announced they were redesigning the venerable XJ. After all, the XJ is more than just a flagship luxury car -- it's the automotive equivalent of Buckingham Palace, the remains of the Empire with a boot and a bonnet. Even in the lean years of two-inch panel gaps, square headlights, and dodgy digital dashboards, Jaguar's flagship still managed to survive on looks. Gradual updates to a design that until recently was based on Sir William Lyons' original drawings kept the XJ a wood-and-leather manor house on four wheels.

Now, Jaguar has a chief of design whose work has saved the marque at the expense of traditional design. It's not that we don't trust Ian Callum, despite the fact his work
often leaves us wondering what kind of Buick he originally set out to design. It's just tough to design a traditional luxury flagship without either succumbing to the fickle high-tech tastes of new money or fading into the Floridian sunset by appealing to the retirement crowd and substituting stale for staid. But a modern redesign of the XJ? That's like giving Queen Elizabeth a Pob.

We're sad to say that new spy shots from Britain's Car magazine confirm the clearest indication yet that Callum's work on the new XJ has destroyed the only car out there that managed to sell on the premise of "gorgeous" alone.
We didn't shed any tears for the demise of the old S-type, which truly deserved to be replaced by the XF. It was retro-detritus that couldn't
hold its own in an already crowded market. And don't get us started on that microwaved Matchbox known as the X-Type. The best thing about the XJ is the fact it isn't retro. The design doesn't hearken back to another era, it is from another era. And you can't beat the real thing.

The mule caught by Car shows the big cat has grown an unsightly proboscis, which Car's Ben Whitworth says houses the air intake for a forced induction 300 horsepower straight six. (At least what's under the hood returns to tradition.) The rest of the mule is based on the evolutionary '08 XJ and belies the changes to come. Callum's 2010 XJ will look nothing like the '08 Jag (shown above) and will instead borrow heavily from Aston Martin the C-XF concept (shown below), with wraparound headlights, an upward facing tail, and a sloping roofline.

In an era of international instability, global terrorism and worldwide financial crises, it's comforting to at least see a car that has some staying power. Sadly, though we know there'll always be an England, there won't always be a classic XJ.

{AUTOS > MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Lotus Building a Hydrogen Taxi and Hybrid Limo

Lotus, the go-fast gurus who brought us the wonderful Elise and helped Tesla Motors with the Roadster, is developing a hydrogen fuel cell taxi that could be on the road by 2012 and hybrid Jaguar limo.

The company's Lotus Engineering division landed the contracts from Britain's Government Technology Strategy Board, which is investing $45.3 million in 16 low-emission vehicle projects. Lotus has a long racing pedigree and is known for building high-performance cars like the awesome 2-Eleven, but it's no stranger to green vehicles. The Tesla Roadster shares DNA with the Elise and is being built at the Lotus factory in Hethel, England, and Lotus has experimented with flex-fuel vehicles in recent years. Group Lotus chief executive Mike Kimberley says the company's expertise with lightweight vehicles and hybrid and electric drivetrains can provide "guilt-free performance motoring."

?There is a
worldwide drive to reduce carbon dioxide emission levels and this is
something to which we are dedicated, for both our Lotus cars and our
global engineering clients,? he says.
Lotus is one of the big names working on the Zero Emission London Taxi Commercialization Project that aims to have 50 to 100 non-polluting taxis on the road by 2012. Lotus brings to the effort its experience
developing hybrids and will integrate
the fuel cell with the electric drivetrain and hydrogen storage
tank.

The other project, dubbed "Limo Green," sees Lotus working with Jaguar and other firms to develop a hybrid executive saloon (that's British for sedan) that emits less than 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. That's not much more than the 104 g/km the Toyota Prius spits out. There's no word on which model Jag they'll use, but the XJ or XK seem like a logical choice, given their lightweight aluminum
body structures.
Plans call for an advanced drive motor,
small battery pack and a small generator for sustained cruising.
