<description>One room available for move-in now! Just need the right person to make it home...

We're looking for a kind, motivated, positive, responsible, laid-back person to sublet one of three rooms in a newly renovated loft/warehouse. Your upstairs housemates Galen and Katie are good, heart-felt, active professionals. Galen works as a professional chef with interests extending into the arts and sustainability while Katie busts out as a corporate event organizer with a love for (and experience with) many things related to Burning Man. Katie has living with her most of the time an adorable, lovable dog that she keeps very clean and happy.

You'll be a great addition to the community with such a good attitude: friendly, conscientious, respectful, trustworthy, communicative, tidy, organized, ecological, flexible, passionate, motivated, healthy, groovy, open-minded. You are looking to stay for at least six months, though we do not have a contract. I like that your creative pursuits steer you clear of the pitfalls: No cable TV, no racism/classism/sexism, no cigarette smoking inside, no hard drugs or people who abuse them. Though gatherings are very welcome, this is not a party pad.

RENT = $500 plus utilities.

Deposit = 1 month's rent.

The path from the front door leads past your colorful room - on the right - to the stairs. A communal creative space - previously used as a painting/work space by the last beloved tenant - is on your left as you approach the stairs. Those stairs lead upstairs to the common area/living room and kitchen and bathrooms.

Our household aspires to inspire creative synergy. I wish you to be an inspired, centered person who is interested in creating beautiful things with positive intentions. The place is tidy and wants you to clean up after yourself so we can breeze through unhindered (neither physical clutter nor emotion baggage). There's certainly room to spread out and get dirty when it's project time, but cleaning up when you're done or delayed is crucial to prevent eyesore or inconvenience for the rest of the house.

There is a detached workspace downstairs that is being used by myself and co-lessee James. I work on electric vehicles as a hobby and profession. I live/sleep next door, making music, metal and ceramics sculpture as time permits. Unfortunately, not much time permits, so you may only see James or myself occasionally. This workspace is on the other side of the wall creating the space downstairs that would be great for use as a work area if you are also the industrious type. Thought you likely would never see them, the property owners intend to add upgrades and are lax and unobtrusive. They raise the rent 3% annually, but give more than 1 month's notice when they do. Next raise expected in May 2009. They didn't raise it this year, so let's hope the trend continues.

AMENITIES

Location: Proximity to Fruitvale BART (8 short blocks), supermarket (2 blocks), Oakland airport, Oakland Coliseum, organic/health food stores, delicious ethnic restaurants, MLK Jr Estuary Park (short bike ride). From a wider lens, Oakland is a central point between SF, Berkeley, San Jose, Tri-Valley, etc.

Sociology: Community environment - This 3-bedroom loft is one of 60 units ~ 150 people living separate and mingled lives. Artists, musicians, writers, etc. in an accepting environment. Friendly to gay/lesbian, pets, cross-cultures, odd hours, Burning Man projects, outdoor decoration freedoms. Parties happen and bands play on different ends of the property on occasion.

Atmosphere: Unique aesthetic - artistic enclave amidst industrial setting adjacent to colorful Fruitvale neighborhood. Lively International Blvd with family feel and new Fruitvale Station community center.

Services: Washer/dryer facilities, dishwasher, delicious Thai food restaurant in building (Vulcan Cafe). Resident manager is available to help with any potential issues or concerns.

Furnishings/Utilities: Fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, blender. Land line and DSL available at extra cost. The place is alive with color. Floors are wood and cement. Skylights provide great natural light.

Thank you for your interest in my second home , I would rather be there than answering e-mails and going to work. You can find more information at www.vrbo.com/103392 and feel free to call me anytime at 408-476-0253. I am in California.

I believe my condo is one of the nicest and best values in Maui for under $450 per night , my rate though is only $269.00 per night which includes all the taxes , reservation fee and nightly front desk fee.

“Check out the Penthouse #706 - Why stay at any other hotel/resort?

View out the kitchen - all newly remodeled ; like a pottery barn catalog
We went there on our honeymoon in August 2008, and will definitely be back next time we visit Maui. We island hopped for a few days, a few other hotels (Westin, Sheraton..), and this unit blows them away. The whole resort is very nice and located on the edge of the strip in Lahaina - far enough to be quiet but just a short stroll to all the shops and restaurants. Kaanapali is just a short drive north, resorts and tall buildings, but you can retreat to 1500 sq ft in this penthouse. If you want spa/massage and all the fluff then a mega resort may be for you, but if you want your own amazing condo check this one out. www.vrbo.com/103392 The Penthouse #706 won't disappoint. I have to admit, my wife was a little leary going from internet reviews and direct rental off the owner, but she now knows it was better than even higher priced hotels and the transaction went seamless. Congrats to the owner for a well run unit.

Lahaina: Lahaina Shores Beach Resort: "Penthouse # 6 at Lahaina Shores. AWESOME!!!"

Hello. Our family stayed in Maui for the 4th of July week and stayed at Lahaina Shores because we wanted a condo with a kitchen. We contacted the owners of the condo directly and saved a lot. The place is beautiful. It isn't an ocean view, but the view of the mountains from the lanai is super, great for a morning coffee and
sunrise or an afternoon cigar, Make sure you have plenty film in your camera. The unit is just recently decorated and looks like it came out of a magazine. We wanted to save some money so we shopped at Safeway (make sure you go to the customer service counter and get a shopping card to use instantly and save more), which is right up the street at the northern end of Lahaina, and we ate dinners in the condo. It has a full kitchen with everything you need. We also packed lunches for the daily snorkeling and sightseeing trips. It was right next to town for shopping and other ventures from the marina (parasiling, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, etc.).
The concierge at Lahaina Shores was more than helpful in planning our week. The hotel was a little more relaxed than some of the other big places to stay, very clean hotel and friendly people, but it had all the necessities, closeness to shopping and fun, outside gas grills, smaller but noncrowded pool, quiet beach, good snorkeling right from shore, etc.
If you want to contact the owner directly he has an e-mail and website;

My experience with this property took place in:
June, 2007
Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend? absolutely!

Our family of 4 stayed in Maui for 10 days. We spent 6 days at the Westin Pool &amp; Spa Resort and 4 at Lahaina Shores - Penthouse # 6. I'm not sure about the other rooms there but this penthouse was perfect for us. We all agreed, we wish we had stayed there longer. Not only was it half the price, but the room was 3-4 times larger than our room at the Westin and completely remodeled. The kitchen was nicer than mine at home, with granite &amp; all new appliances. There was a comfortable king size bed and sofa bed for the kids. The 50" plasma TV and DVD player was perfect for late nights watching movies. We also loved the clean, nicely tiled bathrooms, one of which had a double shower. I thought I might be disappointed with the view of the mountains, but it was beautiful.

I read some of the other reviews which mentioned the pool. To be honest, coming from the Westin, it didn't compare. If you're looking for a fabulous pool with water slides, this may not be the place for you. However, the pool was fine for us - It was an ordinary pool, but it was clean &amp; NOT CROWDED. This you won't find at the Westin. It was also literally a few steps from the beach, which was narrow, but nice and also not very crowded.

My favorite part about the place was its proximity to the town of Lahaina. We walked a half mile to town every night, which meant not having to hassle with or pay for parking. The restaurants and night life in Lahaina are fabulous. Great for families or singles. Our favorite place to eat was an inexpensive little place called Pasta Penne. Not much ambiance but the food was great, especially for picky kids.

All in all, we would highly recommend this condo. To rent it, contact the owners, Tom &amp; Anne Myers at lahainacondo@yahoo.com . It was definitely a good value which is hard to find in Hawaii.

We stayed at Lahaina Shores Beach Resort for Christmas and New Years what a wonderful way to celebrate the Holidays. Lahaina Shores is located right on Front Street with a wonderful Sandy beach right in front of the Condo.

We booked our Penthouse directly from the owner which we found at sunsetinmaui.com we talked to Tom Myers the owner who was a great person to talk to and he gave us some tips on eating , shopping and Golf locations. My Husband enjoyed the 50" Plasma television in the living room along with the walk-in Shower in the Master Bathroom he is a large man and the oversize shower area was large and it had two shower heads.

The swimming pool was a bit small but not used much so it worked out for the kids just fine , we did not have to worry to much about them it seemed like a great place to stay , we looked at other rooms while we stayed there and let me tell you we stayed in the best room at Lahaina Shores Penthouse 6 is a place we will tell all of our friends about and we will come back again .

Thanks Again to all the nice people at Lahaina Shores and in general in Maui , you all made our stay extra special. Hope this review helps out someone else. Feel free to email me if I can make any suggestions for you while you are in Maui.

I really wanted to thanks my Host of Penthouse 706 , The Myers Family , here is there email so you can take advantage of this offer and hopefully you enjoy your stay as much as We enjoyed ours . Lahainacondo@yahoo.com

I am surprised when I read reviews that complain about this property and Lahaina, in general. I stayed in the same unit as "avianman" and couldn't have been more pleased with the accommodations! I was a bit apprehensive since I had booked the unit from an ad on Craigslist, but was only pleased. The unit was recently renovated by its owners, Tom and Anne Myers, (lahainacondo@yahoo.com ) with beautiful tile floors, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and a wonderful shower in the master. The lanai is huge and faces the mountains. Initially I was very bummed that the view was mountains instead of ocean, but they really are beautiful and since you are looking at the ocean all day long, it really didn't turn out to be a negative at all. The decor in our condo matched the "Tommy Bahama" style of the lobby and is very nice. The pool area is clean and nice, and although it is small, our kids had a great time playing in it for hours a day. The best part of this property, in my opinion, is that you can go from the lobby to the pool in 10 steps and 10 more and you are ON THE BEACH! We had some in our group that wanted to be on the beach all the time and others that wanted the pool, so it was very convenient that it wasn't a couple football fields away. The beach is narrow, but you don't need a large beach for the amount of people that are generally there. We were never crowded on the beach--and we were there during spring break. A big plus was sitting on the beach at 8:45 and seeing the fire dancers at The Feast at Lele's right next door--about 20 feet from us! We went to a cheaper luau (kids) but this one looks beautiful! This property is within easy walking distance to the busy downtown area--which we did every night for dinner. There are also wonderful restaurants right next door (IO and PacificO) if you want more expensive seafood/asian. We parked in the outside lot for a few dollars a day--because our SUV seemed too tall for the parking garage. Back to our condo: I can only speak for our condo (penthouse #6) but it was beautiful and I would definitely stay there again. The common areas of the property are very well maintained and the staff was very pleasant and helpful.

Lahaina Shores isn't for people who want to stay at the Hyatt - it wasn't meant to be. The rooms are nearly all different due to the fact that they are individually owned and the decoration is up to the owner. Because of this, online reviews can be VASTLY different, and you could easily get the wrong impression! We stayed in the penthouse unit. It was graced with granite countertops, tile floor throughout, luxury bath/shower in the bedroom and an additional bath/shower in the main hallway. The kitchen is full service (HUGE COST SAVINGS with a grocery store very nearby) with all new appliances as of January 07. The 50" plasma TV was great for a late night movie. The view from the Lanai (facing the mountains) was just awesome, and the sunrise takes your breath away. The Lanai (porch, for us mainlanders!) by itself was larger than the suite we stayed in at the Hyatt Regency the week before! The owner has some outdoor games, rafts and even some basic snorkel gear available for the tenants of this unit. Since Lahaina shores is easily the tallest building in Lahaina, the view from the penthouse unit is unobstructed. We got our unit directly from Mr. Tom Myers (lahainacondo@yahoo.com ) and it is the only one I can recommend, but I GUARANTEE I will stay again. Although rates are subject to change, we were able to book the room for less than half of what a double cost at the Hyatt, and this room if it were at the Hyatt would cost AT LEAST $1200/night! Yes, it is THAT good. Remember, you must contact Mr. Myers directly in order to get his unit.

The town of Lahaina is within easy walking distance, even for the older traveller, and offers plenty of reasonably priced dining, as well as unreasonably price offerings for those who like to throw money at things (seems to be a lot of those in Hawaii...). Lahaina shores has a protected, but small beach that is clean and perfect for sunning. The water just off the beach is quite warm due to its shallow nature and protected sea wall. A quick swim offshore with my snorkel gear revealed beautiful butterfly fish, tobys and pufferfish - even a decent sized eel! (this is WAAY beyond where you would swim if you werent snorkeling) There are a lot of smooth stones in the water, so water shoes are reccomended. Because it is protected from the waves, it is calm (almost glass calm) 90% of the time, and is perfect for floating leasurly on a raft. There is a small pool and hot tub as well. There is also a activity service. The penthouse has protected, indoor parking available for a few dollars a day in the adjacent building. The staff was very, very nice. There were no issues of cleanliness or critters. Renovation was complete when we went in January, and the hotel is beautiful. Kaanapali is a short drive up the beach, not more than 10 minutes.
Please contact me if you have questions and Ill answer them. How anyone could give this place a bad review is beyond me. (Unless you wanted the Ritz - but then, well, stay at the Ritz - but your room wont be as nice, and it will be 3 times the price!) I also have some photos of the unit I stayed in that I can email you.

Tom Myers penthouse unit on the edge of Lahaina Town provides an excellent location within walking distance of everything in downtown Lahaina. We enjoyed the beach access and the pool area has a lot of room for lounging. Tom has done a great job of providing everything you need during a week's stay in Maui. The unit is in superb condition and we found it to be comfortable, accomodating, and up-to-date. The mountain view is excellent from the large lanai or from the unit's large living area / kitchen. The hotel staff was very helpful during our stay. Use of the parking facility provided with the unit was easy and convenient. We would definitely stay there again on our next trip.

My daughters and I checked in to Penthouse 706 and walked in to the most beautiful, spacious place we have ever stayed on Maui. Everything in the condo was perfect. The furniture was beautiful and comfortable. The bedroom was gorgeous and there was more than ample closet/storage space for a full family. The bathrooms were well designed and we loved that there was a laundry room right in the condo. The state of the art kitchen was a delight to cook in. I had my morning Kona coffee every morning out on the lanai and watched the sun come up over the mountains. We walked into Lahaina every day. While we had a car we didn't really need it as we were so close to everything we wanted to see and do in Lahaina. The owner Tom Myers was wonderful to deal with and I booked our stay directly through him. He was easy to contact and more than willing to correct anything that might have gone wrong with our trip. Although nothing went wrong. I have stayed on Maui 5 times now and this has been my favorite place to stay. I can't wait until we can return and enjoy the Penthouse again. Our ten day stay wasn't long enough!

If you want to contact the owner directly he has an e-mail and website;

Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend? absolutely!

Our family of 4 stayed in Maui for 10 days. We spent 6 days at the Westin Pool & Spa Resort and 4 at Lahaina Shores - Penthouse # 6. I'm not sure about the other rooms there but this penthouse was perfect for us. We all agreed, we wish we had stayed there longer. Not only was it half the price, but the room was 3-4 times larger than our room at the Westin and completely remodeled. The kitchen was nicer than mine at home, with granite & all new appliances.

However, the pool was fine for us - It was an ordinary pool, but it was clean & NOT CROWDED.

To rent it, contact the owners, Tom & Anne Myers at lahainacondo@yahoo.com .

If you want to contact the owner directly he has an e-mail and website;

Our ten day stay wasn't long enough!

		<description>

JetBlue has designed a terminal that is functional, relaxing, and yes, we'll say it, sexy.

The airline unveiled Terminal Five -- go ahead, call it
T5. Everyone else does -- at New York's JFK airport yesterday, and it's masterful. It's light, it's airy and with everything from fresh sushi to upscale shopping, it's someplace you might want to, you know, actually wait for a plane. The groovy new $743 million building can handle 250 flights a day through 26 gates that will see 20 million passengers pass through them each year. It's a big deal for the airline, which carries 30 percent of all passengers flying in and out of JFK.
JetBlue has pulled out all the stops with T5. It's 635,000 square feet and sits on 72 acres, vs. 28 acres for JetBlue's previous home at Terminal 6. Those of you who have ever passed through that disaster area can really appreciate T5. The airline went a little nuts with the decoration and color palette for the new space, but overall it works. The airline's Brand Experience types furnished common areas with swanky Italian furniture, installed backlit blue panels everywhere, and covered the baggage carousels with bright orange rugs. We understand the blue, but c'mon -- jetOrange?
In a piece in this month's
Fast Companymagazine (blatant self promotion alert: I wrote it), the airline's Fiona Morrison explains that the bright decor is all about maintaining passengers' mental health. "It's so unexpected to be standing in this warm glow of color," she says of the orange situation. "It makes people happy."
It's also worth noting that T5 is located next to JFK's historic
TWA terminal, which was designed by Earo Saarinen in the 1960s and put on the
National Register of Historic Placesin 2005. JetBlue says it designed its new building so that the huge
windows in the ticketing hall look out over the Saarinen structure, and
chose a design that would complement the building rather than
overpowering it. We like that. Respecting old architecture is cool.
All of this didn't happen overnight, and it wasn't cheap. JetBlue
began designing the terminal in 2004, and broke ground in late 2005. At
the end of the day, the project came in at $743 million, though jetBlue
is only on the hook for $80 million (the New York Port Authority is
picking up the rest.)
Ok, enough of our yabbering. Here are some photos from some of the 13,000 people who passed through the new terminal yesterday.

		<description>

		<description>:
You don't need a lightsaber to carve a Star Wars jack-o'-lantern.

All it takes to create your own Jedi-approved Halloween decoration is a pumpkin, a few tools and a little inspiration from one sci-fi's most beloved franchises.

Got your own geek-o'-lantern? Upload a photo of your geeky gourd to share it with Wired.com's readers.

A collection of Star Wars pumpkins.

:
R2-D2's dome top made a natural translation to a jack-o'-lantern, says Patrick Buechner, 42, of Berkeley, California.

"I work at a videogame studio, so this only improved my geek cred," Buechner said. He shows the pumpkin-carving tools he used on his blog, The Derringdos.

:
"Star Wars has been a favorite theme since I was a kid," said Marc Evan, 28, of Brooklyn, New York. "I believe it has played an important role in the development of our generation's creativity and imagination. It is the mythology that we grew up with."

Evan runs the Maniac Pumpkin Carvers website, and says Star Wars' rich universe has been a consistent influence in his pumpkin artwork.

"My family and friends often chide me about my love for these characters because I have become so immersed in their lore over the years," he said. "But at the same time they love how it has influenced my own creativity and work. As an homage to these great films and mythology I have carved my favorite Dark Lords of the Sith into pumpkins for Halloween."

:

Jim Reynolds, a self-described "huge Star Wars geek" who lives in Akron, Ohio, said he loves Halloween and carving pumpkins so much that he usually ends up with at least 10 gouged gourds each year. At least one of them is usually inspired by George Lucas' film franchise, as is this Darth Vader jack-o'-lantern.

:
"The general reaction from the wife, friends and/or family is a combination of impressed, pity and concern," says Jim Reynolds, 32, of Akron, Ohio, who also carved this imperial insignia pumpkin. "Not so much because of the Star Wars &mdash; more because of the amount of time/effort and my erratic, suggestive Halloween happy-dancing."

:
Sarah Darnell, 31, carved this Jedi master from a pattern provided by The Pumpkin Wizard.

"I can't imagine anything more fun at a Halloween party than the icons from Star Wars," she said. "It turns out that Yoda and friends are very well-suited to flickering orange."

:

"I have been a fan of Star Wars since I saw A New Hope in our theater in my hometown of Woodstock, (Ontario, Canada) in 1977," said Travis Allison, 37, who carved this stormtrooper. "I remember being there with my dad but nothing else other than being so caught up in the story."

:
When the first Star Wars movie came out, it made a huge impression on Marty Hergert, 37, of Melrose, Massachusetts.

"It's a cultural touchstone for people my age who grew up with the original movies, so I guess I want to pass down the passion and imaginative power I felt to my own children," Hergert said.

He based his Yoda jack-o'-lantern on a mask printout from StarWars.com. "I made a line drawing out of it and used those Pumpkin Masters tools to do the fine carving. The difficult part was deciding what features to cut out and what to leave solid and have it still look like Yoda."

The diminutive Jedi master is perfect for a pumpkin because of dark and brooding demeanor, Hergert said: "His sage and mystical qualities come through perfectly in the orange glow."

:

"I chose a Boba Fett pumpkin for two reasons," said Kent "Drhaggis" McKay, a pumpkin carver in his 30s who lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. "I thought the simple, iconic form of the helmet would translate well to a pumpkin and be recognizable. Also, my lifelong love of Star Wars made it hard not to do."

What was the reaction to the sci-fi pumpkin?

"My friends thought it was very cool, as I choose my friends carefully," McKay said. "My wife and I have also done Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter pumpkins. My fandom is worn fairly prominently, so it's never a surprise when I do something like this."

:
Star Wars fans David Newton and his girlfriend, Caryl, carved this Darth Vader pumpkin to battle Halloween ennui.

"At first we considered doing Yoda," he said, "but Vader's a scary dude and fit much better with Halloween." The design is based on artwork by Barry Bradfield of Basement24.com.

"Our friends back home, when they saw the pics, at first didn't believe it was real or, if they did, that we made it," Newton said. "It wasn't until we showed them some pics of us actually carving the pumpkin that they believed us.... Once we convinced them that the pumpkin was actually ours, I think they were pretty damn impressed."

:

Noel Dickover's intricately carved Death Star pumpkin landed the top spot in Wired.com's 2007 geek-o'-lantern roundup.
