<description>An anonymous reader alerts us to a two-week-old story that hasn't gotten much traction in the press to date. A Japanese newspaper and the AP report that China plans to demand source code from hardware manufacturers, and ban the sale of products from companies that don't comply. China is calling this an "obligatory accreditation system for IT security products." The plan is to go into effect next May, according to sources. "Products expected to be subject to the system are those equipped with secret coding, such as [a] contactless smart card system developed by Sony Corp., digital copiers, and computer servers. The Chinese government said it needs the source code to prevent computer viruses taking advantage of software vulnerabilities and to shut out hackers. However, this explanation is unlikely to satisfy concerns that disclosed information might be handed from the Chinese government to Chinese companies. There also are fears that Chinese intelligence services could exploit such confidential information by making it easier to break codes used in... digital devices."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Hi,

I have a master bedroom available October 5th as the current guests will have departed by then. The furnished master bedroom and it can be rented on a temporary basis anywhere from a couple nights to a couple months or even longer. The deposit is $500 and will be returned in full as long as no damage has been done to the apt or room. There's plenty of storage in the closet, bookcase, trunk at foot of bed, bookshelves, bedside chest of drawers. It has a new queensize bed with pillowtop mattress and I've been told by guests, friends and family who've slept over that it is the most comfortable bed ever! The room has a big sliding glass door that opens to a 15ft x 20ft garden deck. Complete use of the apartment is, of course, available, (ie kitchen, living room, deck), except that I would respect the privacy of your room and you would do the same for mine. There is one bathroom we would share, a kitchen, a living room, and the 20 feet x 15 feet patio – pics are in the link above.

The apartment is about a 5 minute drive from either the 101 or 280 freeways depending on traffic and a 5 minute walk to grocery stores, hardware store, fruit market, post office, restaurants, banks, clubs, bike shop, Allstate insurance office, UPS store, underground places, dives, public pools, pharmacy / Walgreens, coffee shop, (w/wifi is across the street as is the laundromat), and the library so everything is very convenient and every necessity is within a 5 minute walk – including St. Lukes's Hospital. MUNI / Public transportation is half a block away on Mission Street or Valencia Street, BART is 5 blocks away, and the J Church streetcar is 2 blocks away. Tell me a bit about yourself if you're interested in a long term rental. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke so sorry, no smokers. Parking west starting on San Jose Avenue of my apartment requires one to move their car once a week for street cleaning – the rest is 2 hr parking or metered. Parking permits are available downtown for ~$20/yr. There is also a rooftop deck for everyone in the apt bldg to use with incredible views.

I would be in the second bedroom and am currently opening a bookstore / coffeehouse / fundraising organization two blocks away so I'm hardly ever at home. I also work part-time at UCSF where I worked for 10 yrs prior to opening the store so I'm home even less now. I'm about a 20 minute walk to San Francisco General Hospital / SFGH or a 10 minute bike ride and UCSF has free shuttles that go to all their other sites from there so that is the closest pickup if you're a doctor / medical school intership / fellowship attendee. I love biking and bike to work, surf, swim, love books, and love to cook (just in case you may be interested as a long-term rental person).

Best wishes and good luck wherever you decide to stay in SF, Tirzah

PS - Also, unfortunately no additional pets are allowed but I understand it's hard to part with pets so describe yours and it's personality and I'll think about it – hopefully it would only be a cat or small to medium sized dog as I don't think I could handle more. I've had 2 friends bring dogs over 2 separate times, albeit they were smallish dogs, and no mayhem ensued so an additional pet might work out. My cats were curiuous and quiet and the dogs just went about sniffing and romping on the deck. An additional deposit would be required if a pet is involved.

PS again – one vacation renter asked if I was in a quiet area and how long it would take to walk to Union Square/Downtown/Financial District and here was my answer:

Hi,

Yes, it is in as quiet an area as can be in a big city. My high school girlfriend came with her family from a suburb of Phoenix, (which I consider to be a pretty darn big city), to visit and remarked that it never gets completely dark here because the brighter street lights are always on which I'd never noticed before. Also, BART and the J Church street car are a 10 minute walk away which will take you to Union Square, or anywhere really, which I would suggest doing as you'll be doing enough walking with Union Square, San Francisco Center, the brand new Westfield Mall/theaters and Metreon Mall/theaters all within a 5 block radius. Remember the malls here go up several floors, not spread out on 2 floors with huge parking lots. I just walked the entire Union Square area and new malls, (malls isn't even quite the right word for them - i don't know what you'd call them!), and my feet were killing me by the time we got home that night. They are incredible, I must admit. If I had to walk to Union Square I think it would take about 45 min to an hour, it's faster/easier going around the hills - not up and over - same as in biking. I'm very close to Valencia (Tiffany Ave intersects with it) so I'd walk north on it and soon you'll hit all its hipster shops between 24th and 16th, then a few blocks more to Market Street where you'd turn right towards Union Square/downtown or left towards the Castro, (both have great shopping). Also, the Noe Valley neighborhood is 4 blocks northwest of my apt with tons of cute shops along 24th street. It is a small city square footage-wise (about 7 miles across) so one can walk from the beach end / Golden Gate Park to the Ferry Building / end of downtown in about 2 hrs. Personally, I ride my bike (but don't do it if you're not at ease on a bike and know the hand signals!) as parking is always free (bring a good lock) and rush hour traffic is never a problem as you cruise right through, see SF map: http://maps.google.com/maps?tab=wl</description>

<description>Purchases of IT hardware such as desktops, notebooks, servers and networking gear are among the budget items to be slashed in tough times. As problems with the U.S. credit market and Wall Street's crisis of confidence continue, IT managers might have to start making cuts in their budgets by the end of 2008. History tells us that means cutting hardware expenses such as desktops, notebooks, servers and networking gear. While cutting hardware and infrastructure costs remains a common approach, a lot hinges on a company's overall financial health and its priorities. - When economic times got tough in the past, IT departments usually turned to

Update 3:Well, the solution I tried in Update 2 did not work. But, I have some good news. I bought a USB wirless adapter by D-Link from NewEgg.com. It&#039;s the D-Link Wireless G DWL-G122 USB Adapter. (It was $20 after a $10 rebate. And it arrived very quickly - NewEgg.com is just great!)I deactivated the old (and somewhat useless) Broadcom Wireless G device in the Device Manager. I then installed the D-Link driver from the CD, and restarted the computer. I eagerly inserted the tiny D-Link device into the USB port, and waited. It was discovered successfully as a new hardware device. It then asked me for a "WEP key". In my wireless G home network configuration, I have two keys, a shorter "WEP phrase" and a longer (28 character) key. At first I entered the shorter "WEP phrase". It then tried to connect to my home network, but got stuck at the "acquiring network address phase". I knew something was wrong. So I went into the properties for the wireless connection, and re-entered the longer key. I then disconnected from the network, and re-connected. Finally, it worked! It seems that the built-in Broadcom device with the HP Pavilion 6105 laptop does not work some 60% of the time. Now I know why this laptop was so severely discounted. People must&#039;ve been returning it in droves. Besides this rather serious flaw, it seems otherwise fine (knock on wood). I was close to returning this laptop, but it seems D-Link has saved the day!Update 2:With a bit more investigation, I found out the specfic error that occured when the Windows Device Manager showed a yellow exclamation point icon next to the Broadcom Wireless entry. If you right click on the entry and choose "Properties", you get this error: This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)If in the Device Manager you choose "View | Devices By Connection", then choose "PCI bus", you&#039;ll see that the Broadcom Wirless device is listed under the "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge" section. With a bit of googling, I came up with a somewhat older article that described problems eerily similar to mine:The problems occur when the motherboard manufacturer has added a PCI-to-PCI bridge to extend the PCI
bus further, or a daughter board or backplane with PCI bus slots has a additional PCI bridge incorporated. These
are usually &#039;positive decode&#039; PCI-to-PCI bridges. The standard Windows PCI drivers do not support enumeration of
&#039;positive decode&#039; PCI bridges. This means that on these systems you are likely to have problems with allocation of
resources. These problems usually show up as failures of the PCMCIA controller in Windows 9x/Me/2000 and XP as &#039;Code 10&#039; or
&#039;Code 12&#039; failures and a &#039;No PCMCIA controller found&#039; message in Windows NT4.It goes on to add:This motherboard contains the nVIDIA® nForce 420D Chipset, and the
offending PCI-to-PCI bridge is the nVIDIA-nForce PCI Bridge made by
nVIDIA Corporation. Other motherboards with this chipset (like the Asus
A7N266-E) may also not be supported in Windows, but we have no test
results for these. So, it seems an older version of nVidia was involved in the situation described above, with a similar "Code 12" error occuring with a PCI-to-PCI bridge. I&#039;m no hardware expert, and I don&#039;t really understand how PCI-to-PCI bridges work, but I thought I&#039;d give upgrading the NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 to the latest driver available through Windows Update (Date last published: 10/18/2006, Download size: 52.6 MB). I installed it, and it asked me to reboot. This time the wireless connection did work! Let&#039;s see if this was just a one-time success, or if this fix lasts. I&#039;ll keep you posted.Update: after a couple of days of hassle-free working, the new driver played the same trick on me: it stopped working. Rebooting Windows a couple of times, the second time with the switch off while it was booting did the trick. I&#039;m beginning to think that there is no logic that can predict when this device will stop or start working. The best solution may be to get another ExpressCard 54 / 34 card to put in the laptop. My old PCMCIA cards sadly won&#039;t work! I recently bought a new HP Pavilion DV6105us laptop from Staples. It was a good buy, and had everything I was looking for: a 64 bit Windows Vista chip (an AMD Turion), enough memory, a decent hard drive, built-in wireless, and even a CD and DVD burner! The screen is really bright and glossy - it&#039;s the best looking laptop screen that I&#039;ve seen or owned. As I began using the laptop, I noticed a serious problem: every time I put the laptop into sleep mode, and then re-awakened it, it was not able to find any wireless networks. (As mentioned before, the laptop came with a built-in Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN wireless "card".) Sometimes, even more strangely, it brought up the Windows "found new hardware" wizard. Ironically, this wizard did not know what kind of hardware it had just detected, and was of no use.I searched HP&#039;s laptop support site, and downloaded what seemed to be a new driver. It in fact was the same driver that came with my laptop. The driver version that came with laptop had the following information (from the Windows Device Manager):Version: 4.40.19.0Date: 3/23/2006The actual driver&#039;s name was BCMWL5.SYS.Since HP&#039;s "updated" driver was of no use, I tried Broadcom&#039;s site next. Their site was not at all useful - their search engine was unable to find anything related to my card, and their product page had no links to any drivers. It&#039;s a shame that Broadcom, unlike other vendors, does not make drivers available from their site.I then searched Google, and found a lot of pages on getting this card to work under Linux. I love Linux as much as the next geek, but this time around I was running Windows XP (shame on me, I know), and I needed it to work with XP, not Linux. Finally, I came across a message on Dell&#039;s support forums. Dell evidently uses the same wireless card in their laptops. The forum mentioned that I could get an updated version of the driver from Microsoft&#039;s Windows Update site. That version of the driver fixed the issues I had with the card.Here&#039;s how you can get it:On Windows Update, one has to first choose "Custom". Then, one has to go to "Hardware, Optional Items". Uncheck the fifty or so non-hardware choices, leaving the just update for the Broadcom card (listed at the bottom). Then install it. Your Internet connection may stop working after you install it. Just restart your computer, and it should now work correctly.

<description>Today, T-Mobile announced the world's first Android-powered phone. This marks an important milestone in the young history of Android. It was less than a year ago, on November 5, that the Open Handset Alliance, a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies, announced plans to create a complete mobile platform that would facilitate the development of advanced mobile applications and give users the best the web has to offer on a mobile device.Software developers are key to driving innovation on the web, and also for mobile. That's why, over the past year, we've released several early versions of the Software Developer Kit (SDK) and worked with developers from around the world to make it better and more complete. This has culminated in today's release of the Android 1.0 SDK R1. Through the SDK, developers have unprecedented access to the hardware and software capabilities of the device, enabling them to innovate freely. More than 1,700 applications were developed as part of the Android Developer Challenge. Google engineers have also been busy developing Android applications. Many of our products (Search, Gmail, and Maps, among others) are available on a wide range of phones such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile devices, and many more. Today, they're also available on Android, and you can check out the Google Mobile blog for more details. But there's more to the Android story. Not only does it allow all applications open access to the phone's functionality; the platform itself will also be open. The Open Handset Alliance has announced its intention to open source the entire Android platform by the end of the year. Along with the other members of the Alliance, we hope that Android can provide a meaningful contribution to all players in the mobile ecosystem: the developers, the wireless carriers, the handset manufacturers, etc. Everyone will be free to adopt and adapt the technology as they see fit. By doing so, we hope that users will get better, more capable phones with powerful web browsers and access to a rich catalogue of innovative mobile applications.Developers will soon be able to distribute their applications to real handsets through the beta version of Android Market. Handset manufacturers and wireless carriers will be able to incorporate Android innovations into their own new handsets and service offerings. And users will get better handsets and more choice. We think it's another step towards realizing the full potential of the mobile phone.Posted by Erick Tseng, Lead Product Manager, Android Team

				Lamborghini's
slow stripteaseof the four-door it's bringing to the
Paris Motor Showcontinues with another close-up of the Estoque, but a leaked concept drawing provides the full monty of a car that continues Sant'Agata's tradition of drawing inspiration from bull fighting when naming its most lust-inducing hardware.

				An
estoqueis the sword used to kill the bull, and it is closely related to
espada, which is both a sword and the two-door, four-seater Lamborghini built between 1968 and 1978. After decades spent building mid-engined two-seaters like the
					Countachand
Murcielago, Lamborghini is building a four-door coupe to compete against the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and Audi A7.
The word from Europe is the Estoque will be a sharp weapon indeed, and the leaked sketches shown below reveal a car inspired by the angular lines of the Reventon.
Lamborghini's been tight-lipped, offering nothing more than four detail shots accompanied by quips like "It's not just a new Lamborghini.
It's a whole new world." But the Estoque will have the engine mounted just behind the front axle and it will drive all four wheels, just like the Gallardo and Murcielago. Automotive News Europe
cites unnamed sources(free subscription required) saying the engine may be a bit smaller than the 5.0-liter V10 in the Gallardo, which would allow the Estoque to be relatively short, and it could have direct injection and twin turbos.
What's more, the Estoque may be an all-aluminum vehicle based on the Audi A7 platform. The car we'll see in Paris is a "near-production" concept, and Lamborghini plans to produce about 3,000 of them each year -- the same volume planned for the Rapide but far fewer than the 20,000 Panameras and 30,000 A7s slated by Porsche and Audi.
Here's the concept drawings showing what appears to be the Estoque:
