<description> Troy Paiva's Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration is a stunning collection of "light-painted" night photography from a variety of modern ruins: ghost towns, abandoned mass-transit stations, an airplane graveyard and others. Paiva places dramatic colored lights in the scene to bring out its essential spookiness, something that is often missing from photos of glorious old ruins. The book includes an intro from BLDGBLOG's Geoff Manaugh and copious notes on the different sites ("TOADS" -- temporary, obsolete, abandoned and derelict spaces) that Paiva and his fellow urban explorers visited (Paiva also includes colorful, curmudgeonly grumps about the damned film location and set people who sex up his ruins by adding extra graffiti and so on). You can see more of Paiva's work on his site, Lost America, which chronicles his serious nighttime infiltration habit. Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration See also: Book: Night Visions: The Art of Urban Exploration...

Starring:
Greg Kinnear
Review:
For a while, it looked like Greg Kinnear showed his acting chops
best with supporting roles in the likes of As Good as It
Gets, Little Miss Sunshine and the current Ghost
Town. Well, hang on. Kinnear takes the star spot in Flash
of Genius and rides it to glory. He plays Robert Kearns, the
Detroit professor, inventor and father of six who came up with the
idea for the intermittent windshield wiper during the 1960s. Go
ahead, groan. I felt the same way. A night reading patent law seems
more exciting. But Kinnear takes this true story &mdash; John
Seabrook's 1993 New Yorker article formed the basis of the
script, by Philip Railsback &mdash; and runs with it. Kearns had
his "flash of genius" when a champagne cork popped his eye on his
honeymoon with wife Phyllis (Lauren Graham). Why couldn't a...

Starring:
Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni
Review:
The fall movie season achieves comic liftoff thanks to Ricky
Gervais, a master of deadpan hilarity playing a dentist who sees
dead people. If you don't know Gervais from the original Brit TV
version of The Office or HBO's Extras, then you
are an idiot and deserve root-canal surgery without Novocain. Wait,
I'm starting to sound like Bertram Pincus, the Scrooge in a dental
smock for whom hell is other people. (Listen, he does live in
Manhattan.) When a colonoscopy gone wrong gives Bertram a taste of
death, he wakes up with ghosts popping up every which way demanding
things from him. It's Sartre's No Exit played for
laughs.
Cheers to David Koepp, who writes blockbusters (Indy 4,
Spider-Man), directs occultish thrillers (Secret Window,
Stir of Echoes) and finds a beguiling comfort zone...

When Ricky Gervais agreed to star in Ghost Town--an odd hybrid of romance, buddy comedy and ghost story--he had three rules.
