Matthew 14:22-3322Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, ?It is a ghost!? And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ?Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.? 28Peter answered him, ?Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.? 29He said, ?Come.? So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ?Lord, save me!? 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ?You of little faith, why did you doubt?? 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, ?Truly you are the Son of God.?NRSV You and I often get unfocused about our lives, and find ourselves not trusting.
{NORTH AMERICA > RENTALS} - sublet in temescal (oakland north / temescal) $650

1 room in a 2BR. Available now. End date is negotiable. Available for at least 2 months maybe more-- details at end of this email.

The Apartment: BIG (and _nice_) 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. Hardwood floors, big kitchen, living and dining rooms. The place is furnished.

The Room: The room is furnished but you can get rid of anything you don’t want. It’s the smaller of two rooms.

The Me: I'm a postdoc at uc berkeley. I’ve been in the bay for 8 years, know lots of (and different types) of people and I like introducing people to each other. I like organizing things – both social and political (the politics fall on the radical side of things).

The Space: Folks visit the house often. You should be prepared for impromptu dinner parties, the occasional not-impromptu dance parties, smaller activist meetings, people coming by to work on their bicycles, and a steady stream of friends. Other times, a week or two will go by or Ill be out of town and its a ghost town. I'd like to live with someone who fits with the space the way it is now, appreciates how it is being used, will take advantage of it themselves.

The You: Because I use the apartment the way I do, I’d like a roommate who is interesting and social and fun and creative, community-oriented, has good awareness (social/political), and is in touch with who they are and how they got there, and not really a tv-watcher. For the right person(s) I can be somewhat flexible on the rent. Queer friendly. Any gender. Couples are welcome too.

The Location: Above perpetually empty storefront at 51st n shattuck. No neighbors sharing any walls. Little yard space in back with a little garden that is yielding well. Friendly, interesting, diverse set of neighbors. Across from shopping "center" with Walgreens Genova deli and Post Office, heart of temescal neighborhood.

The Transport: 30 seconds to the highway towards SF or wherever, 5 min to downtown Oakland, or 1 block from MLK --the quickest way into Berkeley. Street parking is abundantly available. Besides being a convenient base for your wheeled steel pollution cage, you also get, 2 AC transit bus lines, the 1/1R and 18, and you are pretty close to BART. So expect to be HIGHLY mobile!

The Kitty: named Mao, who you will beg you for attention so you need to be able to be nice to him (and not let him go outside). Seriously, he is the neediest cat you will ever meet, so you should like cats.

The Why: Ex-Roommate up and moved to Germany.

This sublet is shortterm and flexible for a number of reasons: 1) its now a month to month lease 2) the owners have been looking to sell - although noone has come by yet and you know how the housing market is. 3) I may need to move out after a few months to go pursue my career in the wider world. So basically its unlikely to evolve into a more permanent living situation - but youll get at least 2 months out of it.

In keeping with the creepy crawly theme started by David today, here's a BBC video and story about the discovery of a new slug species. It's pure white and carnivorous, feasting on worms instead of the typical slug diet of plants and decaying matter. Because it was found in Wales, it's been christened with a partially-Welsh name: Selenochlamys ysbryda. Ysbryd is the disemvowel-proof Welsh word for ghost. I think trolls should post their comments in Welsh from now on. Worm-eating slug found in garden (BBC) (via Arbroath)...

{LIBRARIES > WEBLOGS} - If you're ever in Drosendorf...

Yesterday, I wanted to post a brief entry on the jazz saxophonist Herwig Gradischnig on this blog, recommending his latest CD and advertising the free concert he was giving at the Arkadenhof in Vienna's City Hall yesterday evening. Other things interfered with the blog posting, so it didn't happen, and you missed a very fine concert indeed.

I personally think that saxophone trios (sax, bass, drums) are extremely interesting combos, but also very demanding ones. There is no other instrument that any of the musicians could hide behind, especially no piano that could make things "rounder", so they're pretty much exposed and can't really afford to make any mistakes. However, if the musicians are good, they're usually excellent -- see Lee Konitz's Motion, Sonny Rollins' Night at the Village Vanguard or John Coltrane's "Chasin' the Trane" from Live at the Village Vanguard, all of which are extremely impressive recordings.

Gradischnig and his "Ghost Trio" (Matthias Pichler, bass, and Klemens Marktl, particularly impressive on drums) were in great form yesterday, even though the audience seemed somewhat indecisive about them, which may have had to do with a location that didn't feel particularly cosy. Gradischnig was a lot more energized than at the last concert I had seen him at, when he seemed a bit pale on the stage and was lacking some of his punch. The whole thing was clarified when he walked to the mic between tracks and said, "If you would do me a favour... if you're ever in Drosendorf in Northern Lower Austria, don't eat the seafood pizza. Just don't. Please.”

I've been wanting to pass on Gradischnig's warning for a while now, and I'm glad I can finally do my blog readers a service this way. If you want to hear what Gradischnig sounds like when he hasn't upset his stomach and don't want to risk not being informed about his next concert by this unreliable blogger, you could buy his new CD (or listen to samples on iTunes). It may not be as immediate as a live concert, but it's still an engaging and energizing recording, taut and flawless, oblique enough not to ever become boring, but not so oblique that it could scare off people who listen to jazz only occasionally. Of all jazz CDs released this year, this is so far my favourite.
