<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - White worm-eating slug discovered in Wales</title>

<summary type="text/plain"> In keeping with the creepy crawly theme started by David today, here's a BBC video and story about the discovery of a new slug species. It's pure white and carnivorous, feasting on worms instead of the typical slug diet of plants and decaying matter. Because it was found in Wales, it's been christened with a partially-Welsh name: Selenochlamys ysbryda. Ysbryd is the disemvowel-proof Welsh word for ghost. I think trolls should post their comments in Welsh from now on. Worm-eating slug found in garden (BBC) (via Arbroath)...

<title>{LIBRARIES &gt; WEBLOGS} - If you're ever in Drosendorf...</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/reference/libraries/library-and-information-science/weblogs/if-you-re-ever-in-drosendorf-20080786819.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Yesterday, I wanted to post a brief entry on the jazz saxophonist Herwig Gradischnig on this blog, recommending his latest CD and advertising the free concert he was giving at the Arkadenhof in Vienna's City Hall yesterday evening. Other things interfered with the blog posting, so it didn't happen, and you missed a very fine concert indeed.

I personally think that saxophone trios (sax, bass, drums) are extremely interesting combos, but also very demanding ones. There is no other instrument that any of the musicians could hide behind, especially no piano that could make things "rounder", so they're pretty much exposed and can't really afford to make any mistakes. However, if the musicians are good, they're usually excellent -- see Lee Konitz's Motion, Sonny Rollins' Night at the Village Vanguard or John Coltrane's "Chasin' the Trane" from Live at the Village Vanguard, all of which are extremely impressive recordings.

Gradischnig and his "Ghost Trio" (Matthias Pichler, bass, and Klemens Marktl, particularly impressive on drums) were in great form yesterday, even though the audience seemed somewhat indecisive about them, which may have had to do with a location that didn't feel particularly cosy. Gradischnig was a lot more energized than at the last concert I had seen him at, when he seemed a bit pale on the stage and was lacking some of his punch. The whole thing was clarified when he walked to the mic between tracks and said, "If you would do me a favour... if you're ever in Drosendorf in Northern Lower Austria, don't eat the seafood pizza. Just don't. Please.”

I've been wanting to pass on Gradischnig's warning for a while now, and I'm glad I can finally do my blog readers a service this way. If you want to hear what Gradischnig sounds like when he hasn't upset his stomach and don't want to risk not being informed about his next concert by this unreliable blogger, you could buy his new CD (or listen to samples on iTunes). It may not be as immediate as a live concert, but it's still an engaging and energizing recording, taut and flawless, oblique enough not to ever become boring, but not so oblique that it could scare off people who listen to jazz only occasionally. Of all jazz CDs released this year, this is so far my favourite.</summary>

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - July 3, 1999: Gobbling Up a 'Pac-Man' Record</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/july-3-1999-gobbling-up-a-pac-man-record-2008079528.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">1999: After nearly 20 years and millions of quarters, someone attains the unthinkable: a perfect score on Pac-Man.

The world record was set by 33-year-old Billy Mitchell of Hollywood, Florida, during a U.S.-Canada clash over the Fourth of July weekend. Mitchell took more than six hours to complete the game at the Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire.

To achieve the game's maximum score of 3,333,360 points, Mitchell navigated 256 boards (or screens), eating every single dot, blinking energizer blob, flashing blue ghost, and point-loaded fruit, without losing a single life.

"It was tremendously monotonous," said Mitchell, a father of three and president of Rickey's World Famous Sauces, a manufacturer of Louisiana hot sauces.

Mitchell's record was confirmed by Twin Galaxies, publisher of the Official Video Game &amp; Pinball Book of World Records.

Walter Day, Twin Galaxies' chief scorekeeper, said the perfect Pac-Man score was one of the most difficult feats in the history of arcade gaming.

"The level of completeness is so complete it's difficult to find an analogy to compare it to.... It took tremendous skill. The focus is extraordinary," he said at the time.

Pac-Man has been one of the most popular arcade games ever made, and was played more than 10 billion times worldwide in its first 20 years, according to Day.

"To the best of our knowledge, it [was] the first time someone's done this," said Patrick Fitzgerald, a spokesman for Midway Games, which distributed Pac-Man in the early 1980s.

Mitchell and an American friend had spent the previous year in a grudge match against a pair of Canadians, trying to achieve the first perfect Pac-Man score as a matter of national pride.

In May 1999, one of the Canadians, Rick Fothergill, came within 90 points of the perfect score while playing at the Funspot arcade, described then as the world's second-largest arcade, with about 500 games.

The foursome set a Fourth-of-July-weekend rendezvous for their head-to-head competition.
Mitchell said he came very close to setting the record on July 1 -- which coincidentally is Canada Day -- but a kid pulled the plug about four hours into the game.

"I was noticeably upset," said the soft-spoken Mitchell.

Wearing a red-white-and-blue necktie to celebrate the holiday, Mitchell said he didn't eat for two days of the competition.

He said the record-breaking game's first 20 screens were tense and grueling, while the remaining 236 screens -- all identical -- strained his endurance.

"It felt like I'd been playing forever," he said. "[After about four hours] I realized I still had 100 boards to go. I started talking to myself, coaching myself on. I was afraid I was going to get lost inside myself."

Mitchell's entire game was recorded for posterity on videotape by a Funspot employee.

Mitchell said he was an avid arcade player in his teens, holding world records for the highest score on Donkey Kong, which he first set in 1982 at age 17. Steve Wiebe's attempt to beat that record is chronicled in the 2007 documentary, King of Kong.

"I was absolutely, totally consumed and obsessed by the idea that no one could beat me," Mitchell said. "I was the best."

Mitchell, who signed his high scores "Play to Win," once retired at age 19 before attaining the perfect Pac-Man score. He turned his energies toward the family business, staying away from arcades until 1998.

That's when Mitchell and his friend, Chris Ayra, the world-record holder for the high score on Ms. Pac-Man, a later version of the game, started their rivalry with the Canadians.

"I had the knowledge [to get the perfect Pac-Man score] in 1984, but my enthusiasm and the incentive to do it weren't there," Mitchell said. "We felt the Canadians were Johnny-come-latelys and needed to be put in their place."

After the record-breaking game, Mitchell immediately announced his second retirement, but added: "I'm like a boxer. I might come out for one more fight. Hopefully I won't get beat up."

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; RENTALS} - Sweet house seeks rad housemate (oakland north / temescal) $500</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/business-and-economy/real-estate/rentals/sweet-house-seeks-rad-housemate-oakland-north-temescal-20080649632.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Hello and welcome to our magical craiglist housing post! Our names are Jacob and Matto and we are here in search of a fine housemate to take the place of our beloved Liz, who has decided to make the leap and move in with her partner. We have a three bedroom apartment near MacArthur Blvd and Market St, nestled in the forbidden zone bordering Temescal, West Oakland, Emeryville (the enemy city) and Ghost Town. The apartment is located a few blocks from MacArthur BART and is positioned quite conveniently between downtown Oakland and Berkeley.

About us:

We're both male, in our late 20's and are lovers of spicy food. Matto is a programmer for the wonderful State of California and Jacob is a paraprofessional at an elementary school. One of us is vegan and the other pescafreegan (we just made this word up) who enjoy cooking, playing music, listening to music, going to shows, hanging out, reading, gardening, bike-riding, playing games, park-dwelling, art-makin', etc. We are pretty laid back but not afraid to have fun either. We operate on mutual respect and communication to ensure that the fine submarine that is our home sails smoothly. We have a bunch of instruments in the house (drums, guitars, etc) and like to make noise a few times a week - we are good about respecting each others' needs when someone needs quiet for whatever reason though. We often share meals/food and do weekly rotating chores.

About the apartment:

The apartment is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom split-level duplex that we share with a downstairs neighbor. We have a large living room, kitchen, a nice-sized storage space (aka "the dungeon") in the back, a decent sized back yard with a fig tree and garden, off-street parking and handful of good neighbors. The space was recently rehabbed when we moved in and still has traces of its former haggardness, but is not a bad spot at all - the landlord has been good about being responsive whenever we have had problems. The bathroom is only accessible through two of the bedrooms, so that means there will be some foot traffic through your room to get to it - a bit of a bummer, but we have managed our scarce bathroom resource pretty well so far.

The rent is $500 a month with a $500 security deposit. This does not include our monthly utilities of water/electricity/internet.

About you:

We are looking for someone who:

1) Has a steady source of income and can pay rent/bills.

2) Is responsible/considerate/clean/organized - someone who isn't a slob or anal retentive either.

3) Relaxed but sociable, active, respectful. We are lovers of music/movies but not so big on the television front - not real into couch potato-ism.

4) We are OK with drug use, but it must be responsible/considerate - no hard drugs, no junkies, must be able to respond to reality when it calls.

Q&A:

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself, no rules!

2) What's your diet like? Do you have any special considerations/allergies?

3) Do you smoke/drink/use drugs? If so to any, what are your habits like?

4) What do you like to do like to do in your free time and for fun?

5) What's your typical schedule like?

6) Are you down?
