Dementia 13 a 1963 Francis Ford Coppola/Roger Corman slasher film, is available for download from Archive.org. From Wikipedia: Dementia 13 is a 1963 horror thriller released by American International Pictures, starring William Campbell, Patrick Magee, and Luana Anders. The film was written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by Roger Corman. Although Coppola had been involved in at least two nudie films previously, Dementia 13 served as his first mainstream, "legitimate" directorial effort. The plot follows a scheming young woman who, after having inadvertently caused the heart attack death of her husband, attempts to have herself written into her rich mother-in-law's will. She pays a surprise visit to her late husband's family castle in Ireland, but her plans become permanently interrupted by an axe-wielding lunatic who begins to stalk and murderously hack away at members of the family.
{NEWS > BREAKING NEWS} - Sept. 4, 1957: Short, Unhappy Life of the Edsel

1957: It's E-day, as Ford Motor Company introduces its newest make, the Edsel.

In an industry celebrated for its spectacular failures, the Edsel still takes the cake. Although as mechanically sound as other Ford products, the car was criticized from Day One for being too ugly, too expensive and vastly overhyped.

The 1958 Edsel was intended to be an intermediate-level brand, bridging the gap between the cheaper Fords and pricier Mercurys and Lincolns. The most-affordable Edsel (the Ranger) cost 70 bucks less than Ford's top-end Fairlane, while the most-expensive model (the Citation) cost more than a Mercury Montclair.

In the post-mortem that followed the Edsel's early demise, the faulty pricing structure was cited by Ford as a big reason the car failed. Sales weren't helped, either, by the fact that it rolled out of the plant at the beginning of a recession. But there was more.

The Edsel -- named for Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's son who died of cancer in 1943 -- was the subject of an intense marketing blitz while still on the drawing board. The company promised an eager public something revolutionary, carefully baited the hook, and then failed to deliver. The Edsel was just another sedan on the basic Ford chassis.

Well, maybe not just another sedan. The classic barfly standard that everyone is good looking at closing time isn't true in this case. The Edsel was butt-ugly, period. A half century later, it's still butt-ugly.

Almost immediately after E-day, the superhype that had generated so much anticipation boomeranged on Ford. Automotive writers roundly trashed the Edsel, going so far as to compare the oval-shaped vertical grille to the female sex organ -- racy stuff for 1957.

Henry Ford II, who had opposed naming the car after his late father, believing it to be undignified, was no doubt furious and mortified. Robert McNamara, soon to become U.S. secretary of defense in the Kennedy administration, was president of the Ford Motor Company at the time and realized instantly he had a lemon on his hands. (A few years later, he'd be a little slower to realize that he had even a bigger lemon on his hands in a place called Vietnam.)

During the Edsel's first year, 1958, four models were produced and barely more than 63,000 were sold in the United States. Sales dropped in 1959, even though Ford had cut back to just two models, and on Nov. 19, 1959, barely two years after E-day, the company threw in the towel on the Edsel.

In one of those little logic-defying ironies, the Edsel today is a prized collector's item, fetching as much as $200,000 for a rare 1960 convertible.

Another victim of this historic automotive fiasco was the name Edsel itself. Although never a particularly popular boy's name -- rising to 400th on the 1927 list -- Edsel (from the Old German Adal, meaning "noble") has almost entirely vanished.

General Motors hopes the Chevrolet Volt will seize the green mantle from the Toyota Prius and prove Japan doesn't have a lock on technological innovation, but it could be Mazda the General should be worrying about.

Autocar reports that Mazda's engineers are developing a range-extended electric vehicle much like the car GM is working 24/7 to put in showrooms by the end of 2010.

Mazda could be right behind them with a Volt of its own, which means Ford could be as well.Autocar quotes unnamed "senior sources" saying Mazda is testing an electric car that uses a Wankel rotary engine to charge the battery. It's the same approach GM is taking with the Volt, which will feature a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and lithium-ion battery. Things are going so well for Mazda that it's got a prototype -- a modified a Mazda MPV -- undergoing road tests. Mazda's brass hats are inclined to produce the car but won't make a firm decision until battery costs come down. GM, on the other hand, is willing to lose its shirt on the Volt.

What makes this especially interesting is Ford owns a big chunk of Mazda, which means anything Mazda builds could appear in showrooms with a blue oval on the hood. Looks like the race is on.

FoMoCo's flagship Lincoln brand recently announced plans
to produce a large soft-roader, dubbed MKT, for the 2009 calendar year.
You can call MKT whatever you want- crossover, people mover, glorified
wagon - just don't dare utter the SUV acronym. Hell, Mercedes
classifies their similarly intentioned R-Class
as a GST, or Grand Sports Tourer. With automakers striving to lower
emissions and up the MPG anty, gas guzzling truck-based product
connotations are the equivalent of Kevin Bacon's outlandish Rock music
in Footloose. So yes, MKT will utilize a car platform currently used by the likes of Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and sister vehicle/bread box Ford Flex.

Considering the historically incestuous styling relationship
between Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products, we were pleasantly
surprised to learn that MKT won't be a Flex clone with a chrome star
adorning the grille. In fact, MKT will bear resemblance to performance
sedan sibling MKS and the MKT concept vehicle first shown at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

"Embracing the same spirit as the concept, the Lincoln MKT's design
represents harmony in motion, balancing sculptured shapes and contours
traditionally associated with beautiful cars on a crossover vehicle
that offers the luxury of space and efficient, powerful performance,"
said Peter Horbury, Ford's executive director of Design for The
Americas.Navigator sales ain't what they used to be, so a more fuel efficient
[sister vehicle Flex gets up to 24 MPG on the highway] offering like
MKT will give Lincoln a competitive offering to square off against the
likes of Buick Enclave, Mercedes R-Class and other 7-passenger luxury
soft-roaders in the pipeline. In addition to a 3.7-litre V-6, MKT also
will also offer an EcoBoost
3.5-litre V-6 estimated at 340 horsepower and 340 lb.-ft. of torque.
Ford says EcoBoost engines, which are turbocharged and have direct
injection, deliver up to 20% better fuel economy and 15% improved
emissions than larger-displacement engines.

Lincoln?s MKT Concept showed
Detroit show goers another application for the domestic luxury brand?s new
design aesthetic. Like the MKR concept, and new MKS flagship sedan, MKT
proudly bears Lincoln?s new double-wing chrome snout. And at more than 17 feet, the concept is longer than R-Class
and Escalade. The production MKT will feature three rows of seating instead of the 4 first class
airline-inspired, fully reclineable seats seen in the concept. Also likely not to make production is the center console with
solid-state lighting technology that
allows for 3D image projection onto contoured surfaces.

The MKT Concept featured ?upcycled? materials from SABIC Innovative Plastics.
Valox iQ and Xenoy iQ resins were used in making the body, energy
absorbers, wire bundles and glazing and the resins were made from
discarded soft drink bottles. It remains to be see if the production version will be quite as green.

MKT will be produced alongside Flex at Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada.

{AUTOS > MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Autopia's Picks for Back-to-School Cars

If you've been screwing around online at your desk instead of doing work, you've probably seen the lists of "best back-to-school cars" from Edmunds, MSN and Kelley Blue Book. They trot them out every year and, as expected, every car they pick is reasonably affordable and relatively safe because, let's face it -- your kid is going to total it.

The lists are generally about as exciting as a down-ticket speech at a political convention. As Jack Nerad of Kelly Blue Book says, the recommendations reflect the fact that "vehicles are better built and better equipped than ever before, and there are a variety of body-style options available to suit the needs of any parent, and inevitably satisfy the wants of any teen."

Of course, most parents aren't going to get their daughter a new Miata or send Junior off to college in a Ford Mustang. Being realists, we here at Autopia took a look at what kids are actually driving these days.First up is the ever-popular Grandma's Car. It's only sensible to give an inexperienced driver the keys to an aging boat that sat in a garage without proper maintenance. Old-school Buick Regals and Chrysler New Yorkers have more padding on the roof than on the dash, and the only airbags are the broken ones in the rear suspension. Despite obvious safety flaws, Grandma's Car is a best pick for parents who want their teens to wait until marriage: There's no worse gamekiller than finding a receipt for Metamucil between those bench seat cushions. Bonus points if the opera lights still work.

Next is This Was My Mom's Car but She Got a New One (TWMMCBSGANO), usually driven by the son or daughter of the popular girl you used to hate in high school. Whether it's a Lexus RX330 or a BMW 5-series, the driver's name isn't on the title and it's paid off. Though it might be the safest car on the road, don't let your kid ride with the friend lucky enough to drive it: It'll probably end up wrapped around a tree with all 10 airbags deployed. Bonus points if the newscaster reporting the crash mentions the age of the driver and the name of the car with disdain and jealousy ("a seventeen year old driving a 2005 Land Rover is in serious condition tonight ...)

Every high school parking lot has the Fixer Upper, also known as The Project Car, an 18- to 20-year-old heap in a constant state of upgrade and repair. Driven by budding automotive enthusiasts who usually end up carpooling, this choice transcends culture and geography. Kids in Arkansas often favor Bondo'd and lifted F-150s which predate their birth, while kids in L.A. will lower their carbon-fiber-hooded Accords and dream of JDM engines. If your kid buys one of these off Craigslist, prepare to spend a lot of time cleaning oil off your driveway. Bonus points if your kid sells it to one of his friends for $200 after blowing the head gasket.

Nothing says "my parents only helped me buy a car because they want me out of the house" more than the Total Piece of Crap. It isn't fast, it isn't safe and it probably isn't properly insured -- but it gets kids whose parents hate them to their seven-hour shift washing dishes or busing tables. No after-school activities for you, mister. Your parents had you for the tax benefits and started charging you rent in sixth grade to pay for their yearly Caribbean vacation. Sure, you learn responsibility, but you don't learn calculus because you're too busy working to pay for your car so you can get to work to pay for your car. Get used to your Dodge Shadow, buddy -- this is the first of many disappointments in your life. Bonus points for every bumper sticker plastered over a rust spot.

Finally, there's the Daddy Bought Me a Car! Tiny, ugly and no older than a 2006, these cars were surprise 16th birthday presents from parents who know nothing about cars. You know, the sort of folks who buy something off the lot on their first trip to the dealer? The only option you're going to find in one of these is an automatic transmission, as the clueless parents got talked into skipping optional ABS and side airbags. Expect to see an insurance claim on one of these during the first month of ownership. The good news is that carmakers have stopped churning out a lot of this crap. With the demise of the Cavalier, Neon and Escort, parents can purchase much better inexpensive choices such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai Sonata. Bonus points if there are any bumper stickers or license plate frames that feature the word "princess."
