<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Annie Leibovitz's new book,  At Work</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/annie-leibovitz-s-new-book-at-work-20081182226.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Earlier this week Carla and I went to the wonderful Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to see photographer Annie Leibovitz read from her new book, At Work. The purpose of this book, she said, was to let young photographers find out about photography, and to explain the stories behind the many amazing photographs she's taken in her 40+ year career as a photographer for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. I wasn't expecting to be interested in the text of the book (and it is mostly text, not photos) but I found it to be immensely readable. At Work is not only a gossip lover's delight (she tells fun stories about all the famous people she'd photographed, like Hunter S. Thompson, The Rolling Stones, Queen Elizabeth, and Al Sharpton), its also an inspiration for anyone who does creative work and wants to continuously challenge themselves to become better at their craft. Excerpt I bought my first real camera in Japan, a Minolta SR-T 101. The first thing I did with it was take it on a climb up Mt. Fuji. Climbing Mt. Fuji is something every Japanese does at some point, but it?s harder than you might think. I was young, and I started up the mountain fast. I didn?t know about pacing. My brother Phil was even younger ? he was thirteen ? and he ran ahead of me. Phil disappeared. The camera felt like it weighed a ton. It was awkward. It got heavier the higher we went. After a while I was pretty sure I wasn?t going to make it, but just then a group of elderly Japanese women in dark robes came marching along in single file. They were chanting in an encouraging way and I fell in behind them. We passed Phil at the seventh way station. He was lying flat on his back. When you climb Mt. Fuji you stay overnight at the eighth way station and get up in the morning so that you can reach the top at sunrise. It?s a glorious moment. Spiritually significant. When I got to the top I realized that the only film I had was the roll in the camera. I hadn?t thought much about the film situation. I photographed the sunrise with the two or three frames I had left. At Work...

<title>{LIBRARIES &gt; WEBLOGS} - System requirements</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/reference/libraries/library-and-information-science/weblogs/system-requirements-20081125425.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">The "home version" of Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings (previously mentioned here) is something of a disappointment. Of course I hadn't really expected it to be something like the huge 12-segment presentation that I had seen at the exhibition in Brussels, but I must admit that I had had some kind of small hope, and getting just one segment at a time takes much of the majesty out of the visual experience.

The realization that I'd need not just a big exhibition space, but also at least 4 PowerMacs and 12 huge flat-screen monitors to reproduce something of the experience is slightly disillusioning.

Even worse is that it's not just any PowerMacs that I'd need, but very specifically G5 PowerMacs. That's because the system requirements for the software are such that the "generative music", which creates an endless soundtrack of something like 77 million different combinations of ambient sounds to go with the 77 million paintings, only works on G5 PowerMacs. PowerMacs with G4 processors and even PowerMacs with Intel processors don't get the "generative" continuous soundtrack, but instead have to play a very ungenerative 33-minute MP3 file over iTunes to get any kind of soundtrack at all.

Considering that the G5 PowerMacs weren't exactly the widest-selling computer hardware and considering that Intel PowerMacs even have better processing power, these system requirements are among the most pointless and most frustrating I've ever seen, especially for a product that was released when Intel PowerMacs have been very widely available for quite some time now.

I'll try and install the Windows version on VMware on my Intel PowerMac. If this works, then the software isn't just an exercise in frustration; in that case it's Software of the Absurd in the best Beckett-ian manner.</summary>

<title>{INTERNET &gt; GOOGLE} - Partnering with GE on clean energy</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/computers/internet/searching/search-engines/google/partnering-with-ge-on-clean-energy-20080941134.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Today we announced that we're joining forces (PDF file) with GE to use technology, information and corporate resources to drive the changes necessary to empower consumers with better energy choices. We will focus on improving power generation, transmission and distribution ? a combination of technologies that could be known as the "smart grid." (It would be fair to refer to electricity technologies in common use today as a "grid of only average intelligence.")The existing U.S. infrastructure has not kept pace with the digital economy and the hundreds of technology opportunities that are ready for market. In fact, the way we generate and distribute electricity today is essentially the same as when Thomas Edison built the first power plant well over one hundred years ago. Americans should have the choice to drive more fuel efficient cars ? or even electric cars - and manage their home energy use to reduce costs, and buy power from cleaner sources, or even generate their own power for sale to the grid.We all receive an electricity bill once a month that encourages little except prompt payment. What if, instead, we had access to real-time information about home energy use? What if our flat screen TVs, electronic equipment, lights and appliances were programmed to automatically adjust to save money and cut energy use? What if we could push a button and switch the source of our homes' electricity from fossil fuels to renewable energy? What if the car sitting in our garage ran on electricity ? the equivalent of $1 per gallon gasoline ? and was programmed to charge at night when electricity is cheapest?This vision is what unites Google and GE. We?ll start by working together in Washington, D.C. to mount a major policy effort to enable large-scale deployment of renewable energy generation in the United States. We?ll also work on development and deployment of the ?smart? electricity grid that will empower consumers, utilities, and technology innovators to manage electricity more efficiently and lower their carbon footprint. Finally, we'll collaborate on advanced energy technologies, including technologies to enable the large-scale integration of plug-in vehicles into the grid and new geothermal energy technologies known as enhanced geothermal systems (EGS).Eric Schmidt with GE's CEO Jeff Immelt at Google's Zeitgeist conferenceUpdate: Here's the video of Eric Schmidt and Jeff Immelt's talk at Zeitgeist '08. All day and evening Friday or Wednesday for $150 a month, or Wed. Thur. or Fri. up to 5:00 P.M. for $105. Also Wed. or Fri. evening from 5 P.M. onward for $105 a month.
I am looking for someone who would want to use it 1 or 2 days a week.
This is a 6 month or longer commitment.
$200 cleaning deposit.

This is a very large beautiful office (17 by 16) with 2 HUGE windows and TALL 14 foot ceilings in the same building that houses The Shambhala Headquarters (2288 Fulton). It is on the top floor and gets LOT'S of light.
The space has air conditioning and heat you can control inside the room.

It is beautifully and tastefully furnished. The walls are a light blue and the colors in the space are deep rich reds and other warm colors. There are 2 large striking paintings. There is a futon and 2 chairs along with a very small desk that has a flat screen apple computer.
The office comes with wireless internet. Utilities are included in the rent.
There is a file cabinet so if you need to use one of the drawers you can.
The doors to the building automatically lock at 4:30 P.M. after which you have to go to the door to let someone in the building. There is no automatic buzzer system.

Ideally you are a person who doesn't want to be able to leave very much in the space (of course paperwork, some books, things essential to your work are welcome !)

You will have access to a semi kitchen (no stove) with a little fridge and a microwave and sink.
The bathroom is down the hall and does not have a shower.
There is a large shared waiting room...

This space is WONDERFUL for doing any sort of therapy. Also anything that includes the body...because it is big and spacious.
GREAT for coaching...
GREAT for hypnosis and NLP.
GREAT for massage (not sensual)
GREAT for MANY things !!!!!!!

GREAT for having an office a few blocks from Bart right in the center of Berkeley, right next to TONS of shops, restaurants, cafes, the UC Berkeley Campus (you can step out and take little walks in the campus in the trees and streams to refresh yourself).

You can also go to events Shambhala holds right downstairs.

Also, around the corner from 24 hour fitness and the Berkeley YMCA, so you can work out and go to the office, (which is what I do !) It does not come with parking but there is 2 hour zoned parking a block away and 2 hour parking meters, and you can park a block away in a lot all day for $8. And of course you can take Bart, walk, ride your bike, etc.

I REALLY want to share with someone who is excellent at communicating, and preferably someone who will create a good alliance with me. Also, someone who is respectful of the things in the space and caring for them (such as the thick decadent rich red plush futon cover I had made to fit the futon for the space). There is no eating in the office , as we can eat right outside in the waiting area or in the kitchen which also has a sofa.

I am a Life Coach, and I do hypnosis and NLP and different integrative practices that include the body !!

Please contact me and tell me who you are and what you do and what your needs are. Which day or days would you want the space ?

I can't wait to hear from you !!!!!

Please call me at 510-967-4276
(you can also email me at ahighergame@gmail.com, but better to call)

Warmly,

Tsahai
