<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Weird "tribute videos" of celebs singing = pure YouTube gold</title>

He just might be my brain-warping hero of YT this month. The episode featured above is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "singing" Stride Toward Freedom from "the new music theater show Crisis in Camelot by Ernest R. Tello." WTF? Wednesday (Bush League, thanks John Walsh!) Today happens to be the anniversary of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The text-to-speech robots who secretly control Boing Boing consider this an appropriate homage; please forgive me if you do not. Here's video of Dr. King's historic speech, btw, all LOLs aside....

<title>{AUTOS &gt; MAGAZINES AND E-ZINES} - Storming Sweden in the World's Wildest Prius</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/recreation/autos/magazines-and-e_zines/storming-sweden-in-the-world-s-wildest-prius-20080873718.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

Love it or hate it, the Toyota Prius is a boring car and the last thing you'd expect to see snagging trophies at a car show. But three Swedes with wild imaginations and a truckload of cash have turned a car with the personality of a goldfish into the world's wildest hybrid.

Claes Gustafson and the crew at Classe's Garage completely reworked one of Toyota's eco-wonders and gave it more video screens than the Super Bowl, more speakers than a political convention and a paint job that makes Amy Winehouse look understated.

It took eight weeks and $184,275, and by the time the car rolled out of the shop the only thing they hadn't modified was the chrome trim on the grille.

Gustafson is an automotive reporter for Sweden's TV4, and about a year ago the network asked if he'd like to host his own show building a custom car. The only answer to that question is "Yes," and Gustafson decided to build an eco-friendly ride. He considered a Volvo, a Saab and a Honda but picked the Prius because of its unique drivetrain.

"The goal ... was to give the viewer a great show and, second, to show that a Toyota isn't a boring and anonymous car," he told us by e-mail. The idea, he says, was "to show that every car can be styled."

Saying Elvis Haeggblom and Kenny Kyrk styled the car is like saying Michelangelo painted a ceiling. No one makes a body kit for the Prius, so they used one for the Volvo XC90. They ditched the back doors and swapped the fronts for a pair that open like a knife. The back window went in the trash and the side windows were reshaped. There's a carbon fiber wind splitter under the front bumper and under the door sills. The rear end got a carbon fiber venturi. The car rides on an air suspension and 20-inch wheels brought to a halt with over-sized front brakes.

A body that wild needs an interior to match, so Haeggblom and Kyrk gave it a custom dashboard and a center console, racing seats and a 4,400-watt stereo system measured on the Richter scale. They managed to squeeze five subwoofers, eight speakers and almost a quarter mile of audio cable into the car and still found room for 15 LCD screens and a tablet PC with wireless internet access. Four batteries keep it all going.

Gustafson didn't say anything about mods to the drivetrain, so we're assuming it's stock (although they moved the shifter from the dash to the center console and gave it an eight-ball knob). The entire buildup was chronicled on the program Classe Bilstyling (Swedish for car styling) last spring and the car made its public debut at the Bilsport Custom and Performance Show, where it took top honors in the eco-car division and snagged the John D'Agsostino Kustom Kars of California Special Award. It's since appeared in Sweden's Street Xtreme magazine, which shot the video we grabbed the pic from.

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Mourning the Internet Famous: Randy Pausch's Distributed Funeral</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/mourning-the-internet-famous-randy-pausch-s-distributed-20080723325.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">
When the silent film star Rudolph Valentino died in 1926, thousands gathered in the streets of New York in such an excitable state that a riot broke out, injuring 100 people. It was a leading indicator that the medium and its stars held Americans in thrall.

Randy Pausch's death on Friday provides an example of how we'll mourn the passing of the internet famous. Pausch gained celebrity with his exceptional and touching "Last Lecture," which he delivered after he'd been diagnosed with fatal pancreatic cancer.

When news of Pausch's passing surfaced, the internet lit up with tens of thousands of Tweets and blog posts. Google even added a small tribute to the man on its main search page. But most fascinating and perhaps heartfelt were the grief-stricken comments that run for pages after every obituary or blog post bearing his name.

This massive outpouring of grief is now inscribed across all media silos and geographies, respecting no particular corporate or institutional demarcations. There is no official place for expressing sorrow, no central control of this mourning. Taken as a whole, it shows that the internet has begun to alter how we mourn the dead, probably the deepest, oldest tradition of civilization. And in the process, it's revealed the extent of the flash-community of Randy-lovers, URLs linked like the arms of the marchers who grieved in the streets of Atlanta in the wake of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death.

I had the sad task of writing one of the many obituaries for Pausch. Within minutes, comments started to come in with a curious grammar like this one from Colleen:

I am real sorry for your loss Jai. Your husband have [sic] inspired me to be a better version of myself. After I heard about Randy's passing, I couldn't help but cry. The whole world is mourning with you.

These comments weren't about Pausch's death. They were addressed to him and his kin, as if Wired.com would convey this message to them. It's as if the internet has joined the angels in our collective imagination of heaven, the CAT-5 winding into the clouds like a beanstalk.

This was strange.

I checked other obits, like this random one from the Dallas Morning News metro blog, and found the same pattern: "Your inspiration stays with us, thank you. Peace to your family, Godspeed," commented Joanie Pelsynzka. Tributes.com, an obituary site, has dozens of pages worth of similar sentiments.

It dawned on me that I was witnessing a new form of grieving: the distributed funeral.

Why watch the service on TV when you can comment on the obituaries themselves? As my friend and Dwell magazine editor Aaron Britt put it Saturday, "the internet is an open letter to everyone," and people began using any form text box on any webpage, related or not to the Pausch family itself, to make known their sadness.

At some level, these comments are a bit crazy. It wouldn't make sense in any other context to write or say what people are writing in the comments sections of blogs across the country. You can't imagine telling someone about Randy Pausch's death and them saying to you, "I am real sorry for your loss Jai," because you are not, in fact, Jai.

But given the searchability of the internet, this behavior isn't that nuts. It doesn't actually matter what URL you put your condolences on, it's all part of Googleverse, so Jai could find it if she wanted to find it.

The mourning also mimics the way that people experience Pausch's powerful oration. You interacted with Randy through a little box embedded in a webpage. Your headphones piped his voice clear and strong into the center of your brain, almost as if some deep part of your own mind was delivering his nuggets of wisdom. He was talking to you alone, not the hundreds packed into a theater or your family gathered around the television. In response, then, it made sense to get personal and say, directly, "Thanks, Randy. We'll miss you."

This mourning splits the difference between the small and generally private funerals of our friends and family and the public spectacles that marked the passings of Stalin, or Elvis, or Princess Di. Millions of people grieved alone in the asynchronous communities of the internet.

Still, at whatever scale and medium chosen, all these death rituals retain their universal purpose. They all provide convincing evidence that though the star may die, the universe continues. Though the Marine is gone, the corps lives on.

"The integrity and viability of human society is challenged by every death, some more than others," write the authors of the dryly grisly 1989 tome, The Encyclopedia of Death. "The need to affirm or restore the strength of the community against the force of death becomes especially obvious when a powerful leader dies."

The strength of the internet communities' reaction to the medium's most famous death-defying cancer patient shows how this series of tubes has come of age, not just as a market or a means of distribution, but as a series of linked communities, significant enough to require affirmations in the face of death.

Comments, then, are flowers and wreaths, candles, pictures and prayers, and the Pausch's doorstep is located precisely at any address at which the web's spiders can find their name.

One can only imagine that Randy Pausch's distributed funeral procession would warm the staunch advocate of virtual reality's heart. Right, Randy?

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - New Harley-Davidson Museum Is Heaven for Hells Angels</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/new-harley-davidson-museum-is-heaven-for-hells-angels-20080735933.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">: The Harley-Davidson is more than a two-wheeled miscreant-hauler; it's one of America's most important indigenous technologies. The 45-degree V-twin engine has remained remarkably unchanged since it was introduced in 1909. Now the Harley has its own museum, which opened on July 12 in Milwaukee, the bike's birthplace. Inside the steel-framed compound, you'll find plenty of antique bikes and memorabilia, including the original outlaw: Serial Number One. There's also a "family tree" that shows how engineers modernized the distinctive two-cylinder engine without sacrificing its signature raw rumble.

    	But confining all that heavy metal thunder indoors would be sacrilege. So Pentagram, the chief design firm on the project, turned 20 acres of industrial land into hog heaven: The three buildings containing galleries, archives, and the obligatory store are arranged around an intersection of 60-foot-wide roads &mdash; broad enough for four rows of parking and two traffic lanes, just like at Sturgis &mdash; creating an ever-changing exhibit of visitors' bikes. "It's important to have a real museum," Pentagram architect James Biber says, "but also to have a kind of museum on the street." There's car parking as well, but the lots are a bit of a hike from the entrance; this is one stretch of pavement where motorcycles always have the right of way.
: Harley-Davidson has produced more than 400 types of rides in more than a century, but this is the bike that started it all: Serial Number One. Constructed in 1903, it's the very first Harley-Davidson "motorcycle." : One of the company's most visible cheerleaders is Willie G. Davidson, the grandson of cofounder William A. Davidson. After joining Harley-Davidson in 1963, he helped design the FX Super Glide, which ushered in an era of factory-built motorcycles that had the style of more popular custom motorcycles. Seen here with onlookers and construction workers, he was on hand for the signing ceremony of the final beam of the museum's framework, just before it was hoisted into place.: In early 1969, American Machinery &amp; Foundry purchased the Harley-Davidson company. Despite much investment from AMF, a declining workforce, labor strife, and poor manufacturing decisions led to inferior bikes and disappointing sales. In 1981, on the verge of bankruptcy, AMF sold the company to a group of 13 investors, including Willie G. Davidson. This iconic ad represents the buyback, alerting the world that Harley-Davidson had returned to its roots.: Hard-shell helmets? Stuffy leather outfits? Brakes? Bah. At the turn of the century, real speed racers roared down two-by-fours at more than 100 miles an hour on tracks banked up as high as 60 degrees.: The museum will feature a genuine replica of a board track, complete with classic board track motorcycles planted around it. Don't expect much in the way of racing though &mdash; fatalities among riders and spectators signed the sport's death sentence more than 70 years ago.: Customization is at the heart of the Harley-Davidson experience, and this particular bike exemplifies the art. Thirteen feet long, equipped with two Knucklehead engines, and weighing more than 1,000 pounds, the King Kong is Harley-Davidson enthusiast Felix Predko's labor of love. With the initial work requiring 4,000 hours of labor between 1949 and 1952, this engineering marvel finds a home within the museum's hallowed halls.: The Electra Glide, introduced in 1965, is now a staple in the touring line of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. A regular sight on the open road, these long-haulers exemplify the road-hog experience. : A symbol of connection between Harley-Davidson and its devotees, personalized, engraved rivets will be on permanent display around the museum. A 3-inch rivet will run $250, while the 6-inch version will cost cost $1,500.: Personalized rivets will be on display around the museum grounds. The 3-inch variants will adorn curved steel walls, while the larger 6-inch rivets will be laid in the ground in concrete within a plaza of their own. All rivet owners will be provided with a map, listing the location of their personal rivet.: Nearly 40 years ago, actor Peter Fonda rode a star-spangled red, white, and blue custom chopper on his cross-country trek with Dennis Hopper in the seminal film Easy Rider. Replicas of their iconic bikes will be on display at the museum.: A ground-breaking ceremony as only Harley-Davidson could do it. On June 1, 2006, nine-time AMA Grand National Champion Scott Parker put down the traditional shovel in favor of something with a bit more oomph, ripping through the dirt on an XL 883R Sportster.: Amid all the classic hogs, many hip-shaking fans will flock immediately to a 1956 KH model owned by none other than Elvis Presley. (The museum even has the receipt to prove it!) A full three months before his memorable performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the King appeared with his ride on the cover of The Enthusiast, the hottest motorcycle mag of its time.: Part thoroughfare, part exhibition space, the "parking gardens" at the Harley-Davidson Museum will allow riders to rest their bikes and ogle everyone else's.

Eric Cabahug takes home the gold with his tranquil photo of the blue canoe on a sandbar at left. Mr. Cabahug will be receiving a subscription to Wired magazine and a digital picture frame for his desk.

Since there were so many great photos that we thought should've received more votes, we've also compiled a Wired.com Editor's Choice Blue Photo Gallery.

Our next twice-monthly photo contest is cities. We want you to hit the pavement and show us what your city looks like through your camera lens. Check out the contest page for more information.
