<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Jansing, Halperin uncritically report Palin's false charge that Obama's "punished with a baby" comment was about abortion</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/jansing-halperin-uncritically-report-palin-s-false-20081067213.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

On the October 11 edition of MSNBC Live, anchor Chris Jansing uncritically aired Gov.
Sarah Palin's false claim that Sen. Barack Obama was talking about abortion when
he said: "I've got
two daughters -- 9 years old and
6 years old. I'm
going to teach them
first of all about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with
a baby." In an October 11 entry
on his Time.com website, The Page, Time editor-at-large Mark Halperin wrote,
"In Pennsylvania Saturday the Alaska Governor goes hard against Obama,
goes after his record on partial-birth abortion," and quoted from
Palin's attack on Obama. In fact, Obama
made no reference to abortion in his "punished with a baby"
comments, but was instead referring to sex
education.

During the MSNBC segment, Jansing reported that
Palin is "taking aim at Barack Obama, this
time on the issue of abortion." She then
aired Palin saying: "I listened when
our opponent defended his
unconditional support for unlimited abortions, and
he said -- he said that a woman shouldn't have to be, quote, 'punished with a baby.' Ladies
and gentlemen, he said that right here in Johnstown,
'punished with a baby.'
It's about time that we called him on it." Discussing the comments with
Jansing, NBC News correspondent Savannah Guthrie later said of Palin:
"[W]e've never heard her speak quite like this, and at such length,
about Barack Obama's record on abortion."

Neither Jansing, Guthrie, nor
Halperin noted that Palin's charge about Obama's "punished with a baby" comment was false. As Media Matters for
America has previously documented, Obama made
the comment in response to what CNN reported was
"a question about how
his administration, if he's
elected, would deal with
the issue of HIV
and AIDS and also
sexually transmitted diseases with
young girls." Indeed, as video of the
March 29 campaign event, broadcast by CNN, shows, Obama was discussing sex
education, not abortion, when he made the comment Palin cited.

From the March 29 edition
of CNN's Ballot Bowl
2008:

MARY SNOW (CNN correspondent):
Welcome back to CNN's edition of Ballot Bowl. This is a chance
for you to hear directly from the candidates. I'm Mary Snow in Johnstown, Pennsylvania,
where Senator Barack Obama is holding a town hall meeting right now, taking
questions from the audience. Let's go straight to Senator Barack Obama; he just was asked a question about
how his administration, if he's elected, would deal with the issue of HIV and
AIDS and also sexually transmitted diseases with young girls.
Here's Senator Barack Obama.

OBAMA: -- or we give them really
expensive surgery and we don't spend money on the front end keeping people
healthy in the first place. So, when it comes to -- when it comes specifically
to HIV/AIDS, the most important prevention is education, which should include
-- which should include abstinence only -- should include abstinence education
and teaching that children -- teaching children, you know, that sex is not
something casual. But it should also include -- it should also include
other, you know, information about contraception because, look, I've got two
daughters -- 9 years old and 6 years old. I'm going to teach them first of all
about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them
punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at the age of 16.

You know, so, it doesn't make sense
to not give them information. You still want to teach them the morals and the
values to make good decisions. That will be
important, number one. Then we're still going to have to provide better
treatment for those who do have -- who do contract HIV/AIDS, because it's no
longer a death sentence, if, in fact, you get the proper cocktails. It's
expensive. That's why we want to prevent as much as possible.

But we should also provide better
treatment. And we should focus on those sectors where it's prevalent and we've
got to get over the stigma because understand that the fastest growth in
HIV/AIDS is in heterosexuals, not gays. And so, we've got to get out of that
stigma that we still have around it. It's connected also to drug use. So, one
of the things we have to do is to start thinking about better substance abuse
treatment programs around drugs and not just treat it as a criminal justice
issue. Treat it as a public health issue as well.

From the 11 a.m.
ET hour of the October 11 edition of MSNBC Live:

JANSING: Let's go back to politics. Sarah Palin is swinging through Pennsylvania today holding a rally this morning in the city of Johnstown. She's taking aim
at Barack Obama, this
time on the issue of abortion.

PALIN [video clip]: I listened when our
opponent defended his unconditional support for
unlimited abortions, and he said -- he said that a woman shouldn't have
to be, quote, "punished with a baby." Ladies and gentlemen, he said that right here in Johnstown, "punished with a baby." It's about time that we called him
on it.

JANSING: NBC's Savannah Guthrie is traveling with the Palin campaign, joins us now
by phone. We know
that most of these speeches, Savannah, are the
sort of stock stump speeches. Was that something new
today?

GUTHRIE: It was new. Actually, we've never heard her speak quite like this, and at such length, about Barack Obama's record on abortion. By one
count, she spoke for
10 to 12 minutes about these issues. She also
for the first time
really spoke about her
own child in pretty personal terms. You know, her son,
Trig, has Down syndrome and
a lot
of people, particularly in the pro-life community, really admire Sarah Palin for not just
talking the talk as they say, but
walking the walk. But
in any event, after she sort of introduced the topic by talking about her
own young son, she
then really hit Obama hard on what the campaign likes to call extreme views on abortion. It's interesting, she's here in Pennsylvania, a place where they may be trying to reach out, for example, to pro-life Catholic Democrats, maybe that's the audience they
were hoping to address today.

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - After railing against gay marriage, Savage said "the spiritual side of the downturn on Wall Street was directly related to the moral downturn"</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/after-railing-against-gay-marriage-savage-said-2008109742.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

During the October 1 broadcast of his nationally syndicated
radio show, Michael Savage said: "[Y]ou may say, 'Why should we care about
homosexuals trying to destroy families through the mock marriage that they perform in order
to mock God, the church, the family, children, the fetus, the DNA of the human
species? Why should we care about it while
we have a financial meltdown?' Because the spiritual side of the downturn
on Wall Street is
directly related to the moral downturn in the United States of America." Savage also said: "[T]he
government has no right to force people to accept homosexual marriage. It is why the West is dying. It is why we're melting down as a
nation. It is why there is no -- why we have
almost negative childbirth rate except amongst illegal aliens."

Savage later said of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom:
"Today it's the gays,
tomorrow it'll
be a man marrying a horse. If he could get elected
saying that a man should be allowed to
marry a mule -- a
donkey or a mule, he
would do that, too, saying it's a civil
right to marry a mule --
that any man should have the right to have sex with an animal, because that's his right and the animal
isn't complaining about it."

Savage also said: "Take a look at the parade here in this city over the weekend -- they hid it from you. Why did they hide it from you? Why did they
not show you men naked in the
streets, beating each other up in cages with whips? If you saw the disgusting behavior that Nancy Pelosi
permits, that 'Any-Twosome' Newsom permits, that no sane mayor in
the world would permit. Dungeon
behavior in the streets held up as a norm. Makes
the Weimar Republic look like Alice in Wonderland." On the September 29 broadcast of his
nationally syndicated radio show, while discussing the Folsom Street Fair, a
leather-themed adult-entertainment event in San Francisco,
Savage stated: "This
country today is far beyond the excesses of the Weimar Republic
that led to Adolf Hitler. God forbid that should ever happen here. But the
German people, who were not all Nazis prior to Hitler's arrival on the scene,
were shocked by the degenerates of Berlin.
They were sickened by the perverts, sickened by the artistes, they were
sickened by the leather fetishists, they were sickened by the degeneracy, and
they couldn't handle it."

During the October
1 show, Savage also referred to the "gay mafia." As Media Matters for America has documented, Savage has repeatedly referred to "the homosexual
mafia" in the past.

As Media
Matters has also documented, Savage formerly hosted a
television program on MSNBC but was fired after he
described a caller as a "sodomite" and told him to "get AIDS and
die." Savage has also claimed that
"the homosexual dance of death" is the "seminal issue of our
time," compared gays to
"drug addicts," and repeatedly called gay parenting
"child abuse."

Talk Radio Network, which syndicates Savage's show, claims that Savage
is heard on more than 350 radio stations. The Savage Nation reaches at
least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine,
making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation.

From the October 1 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:

SAVAGE: Apparently, Gavin
"Any-twosome"
Newsom, the mayor of "San Fransifo,"
is in love again. He's in love again with
the gay mafia. And
he's trying to impose this attack upon families on the entire state. Can you raise the volume? I
can't even hear
it. All right, there it is. Now,
you may say -- you may say,
"Why should we care about homosexuals trying to destroy families through
the mock marriage that
they perform in order to mock God, the church, the family, children, the fetus,
the DNA of the human species? Why should we care about it while we have a financial meltdown?"
Because the spiritual side of the downturn on Wall Street is directly related to the moral downturn in the United States of America. That is why we have a corrupt Congress. That is why we have a corrupt Wall Street. Because they have been corrupted from top to
bottom.

[...]

SAVAGE: African-Americans suffered because of their race, not
because of their behavior. Do
you understand what I just
said to you? "Oooh! Are you implying that it's a bad
behavior?" Yes, yes I
am implying that it's a bad behavior, and the government has no right to
force people to accept homosexual marriage. It is why the West is dying. It
is why we're melting down as a nation. It is why there is no -- why we have almost negative
childbirth rate except amongst illegal aliens. Because they have not yet been twisted to
believe that this is a healthy lifestyle. Everything in you knows that I'm right. But you'll fight with
me. You'll argue with me. You'll post it as bigotry, when, in fact, the opposite is
true. I'm
struggling every day to save
this country from people like you, who have destroyed it already.

America's balance hangs like a loose -- America's future hangs like a
loose tooth. It hangs like a loose tooth right now. So, here in San Francisco, we got a wack-job as a mayor -- "Any-twosome" Newsom. Today
it's the gays, tomorrow
it'll be a man marrying a horse. If he could get elected
saying that a man should be allowed to
marry a mule -- a
donkey or a mule, he
would do that, too, saying it's a civil
right to marry a mule --
that any man should have the right to have sex with an animal, because that's his right and the animal
isn't complaining about it. Well, I would say that would be
true in Enumclaw, Washington,
where it's a national -- where
it's a pastime in that city -- they have whole farms up there for that kind of stuff. But it doesn't mean
that the government should honor that.
I mean, you can puke and look at it and say,
"OK -- that
behavior -- but
don't teach it to my children."

Take a look at the parade here in this city over the weekend -- they hid it from you. Why did they hide it from you? Why did they
not show you men naked in the
streets, beating each other up in cages with whips? If you saw the disgusting behavior that Nancy Pelosi
permits, that "Any-Twosome" Newsom permits, that no sane mayor in
the world would permit. Dungeon
behavior in the streets held up as a norm. Makes
the Weimar Republic look like Alice in Wonderland. Makes
ancient Rome's
bacchanals look like a tea party,
what goes on in this city. And if you let a society run this way, it eventually
dies, and that's why we're dead.

<title>{ISSUES &gt; BIAS AND BALANCE} - Savage linked San Francisco event to the "artistes" and "leather fetishists" of Weimar-era Germany, whom he blamed for Hitler's rise</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/society/issues/business/media/bias-and-balance/savage-linked-san-francisco-event-to-the-artistes-20080974935.htm"/>

Savage also said that the people who participated in the Folsom
Street Fair are "doing what they do because they're sick,
they're mentally ill. Every last person there is a mentally ill person,
in my opinion."

Later in the program, Savage said of the San Francisco
event:

What do you think God was saying through Isaiah: "What part shall they be
stricken, as you stray away more and more?" Well, God was talking about
the Folsom Street sadomasochistic fair in San
Francisco. He's saying to those people,
"What part will you be stricken of your body, seeing as you stray away
more and more?" And they keep whipping each other, saying, "I
condemn God. I don't believe in God. That's for the fools.
That's for the right-wing Christians. We don't believe in
that." And yet, they get sick and they die, and they don't even

REP. JOHN CULBERSON (R-TX) [audio clip]: We're not gonna load our kids up with
an unaffordable debt burden that'll bankrupt this nation and turn us into
the Weimar Republic. We've got to be careful
and --

SAVAGE:
Well, here in San Francisco, we're way
past the Weimar Republic. They had in the midst of all
of this a so-called Folsom Street Fair, where naked men cavorted with whips and
chains and leather yesterday. I noticed that our Italian grandmother, Nancy
Pelosi, had nothing to say about values. This went on in the sickest city in
the world. We're way past the Weimar
 Republic. I only pray
that there's no Hitler in the wings.

[...]

SAVAGE: Now, I want you to go to MichealSavage.com, go to
the middle of the page on the right, and you'll see a man in a leather
mask -- a man, a grown white man, standing at a leather parade yesterday. A
leather festival, so to speak, in San Francisco, where people were walking
around with their private parts exposed beating each other up with whips, while
others stood around in a drunken stupor, or a drunken orgy, witnessing men
being whipped in public. And my headline is, "The Devil Runs San Fransicko,"
and that's what I said to Representative Culberson.

It's interesting to me that you mention the Weimar Republic,
because this country today is far beyond -- has gone far beyond the excesses of
the Weimar Republic, which led to Adolf Hitler. God
forbid that should ever happen here. But the German people, who were not all
Nazis prior to Hitler's arrival on the scene, were shocked by the

They were sickened -- the average person in Germany was sickened by the
perverts; they were sickened by the artistes; they were just sickened by the
leather fetishists; they were sickened by the degeneracy; and they
couldn't handle it.

Now, you know, leather and this and that is, you say,
someone's business. I may agree with you. If someone does so willingly, I
could look the other way. But it shouldn't be permitted on a public
street. When this occurred last September, I voiced opposition to it. Nancy
Pelosi had the nerve to say that, as a Catholic grandmother, she's not
offended by it. I said, "If she's not offended by this, what would
offend her?" Well, apparently, nothing offends Nancy Pelosi except
Republicans who don't go along with her iron gavel.

No, this shouldn't be permitted in public. They should
be arrested by the vice squad. But we have a sick mayor -- a useless, sick
piece of spaghetti. He's not even al dente, you know, he's al
softy. We have a mayor that's al softy in this city, not even al dente.
The vice squad is now only looking for people who do not burn American flags
rather than people who burn American flags. Everything's upside-down.
It's "Alice
in Wonderland." I guess what I'm getting at is this: At the same
time we have the largest financial meltdown in our time, these sickos go to a
leather parade and whip each other in the streets -- still doing what they do
because they're sick, they're mentally ill. Every last person there
is a mentally ill person, in my opinion. And what they were doing in the
streets was an example not of wholesomeness but of sickness.

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Gallery: 10 YouTube Videos Destined for the Big Screen</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/gallery-10-youtube-videos-destined-for-the-big-screen-20080933521.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">: YouTube's biggest tear-jerker may soon be wrenching sobs from big-screen viewers.Sony Pictures has its claws in Christian the Lion, a clip of grainy footage showing a pair of animal lovers reuniting with their adopted cub in Africa. John Rendall and Anthony Bourke, the duo who adopted the cat from a high-end London department store in the late '60s, are currently in negotiations with the studio to option their book detailing the experience.

From the lightsaber role-playing of the Star Wars Kid to the brawl on the savannah in Battle at Krueger, here are some of the viral video hits ripe for release in theaters.

Which short destined-for-the-silver screen did we skip over? Submit your picks in the comments below.

Left: Miss South Carolina 2007

Beauty queen Lauren Upton's bungled response to a question about education during 2007's Miss Teen USA competition drew gasps from the audience -- and more than 30 million views on YouTube. Upton's on-camera gaffe won her instant internet fame and notoriety, but she still managed to nab third runner-up in the contest (and high-profile gigs like a cameo in Weezer's "Pork and Beans" music video and the 2007 MTV's Video Music Awards). Her public embarrassment and rebound are prime for a Hollywood makeover a la Legally Blonde.
DVD Bonus Features: Behind-the-scenes featurette with contest host Mario Lopez on his point-of-view; mumble-along music video of the mangled speech.

: Charlie Bit My Finger
Chubby-cheeked baby Charlie's penchant for nibbling big brother Harry's finger has captured the hearts -- and eyes -- of more than 50 million YouTubers. It's also led us to wonder if the internet clip could serve as inspiration for a good, old-fashioned horror flick about a baby gone bad -- like Pet Cemetery, Children of the Corn or The Omen. DVD Bonus Features: Sequel to Charlie Bit My Finger -- Charlie Bit My Finger ... Off.: Star Wars Kid
The trials and tribulations of an awkward teenager sound like something out of a Judd Apatow feature, so why not give it the full treatment -- starring the likes of Michael Cera (who already spoofed the video on Arrested Development), Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen?
DVD Bonus Features: Ghyslain speaks.
: Charlie the Unicorn

Who knew unicorns could be surly? Charlie's psychedelic voyage to Candy Mountain feels all too short at four minutes. Hollywood could turn his subterranean battle with kidney snatchers into a horror flick -- kind of The Descent meets Turistas.
DVD Bonus Features: What really happened in Candy Mountain featurette.
: Shoes
Foul-mouthed valley girl Kelly and her curmudgeonly family would make a great feature-length film a la Welcome to the Dollhouse. We?d cast funnyfolk Amy Sedaris and Will Ferrell to play the twins.
DVD Bonus Features: Liam Sullivan performs live as Kelly.
: Brokeback to the Future

Of the slew of parodies and mashups inspired by Ang Lee's 2005 Oscar-winning drama Brokeback Mountain, Brokeback to the Future is the most entertaining. Which is exactly why we propose a feature-length fourth installment of the Back to the Future franchise -- just add a couple scenes featuring Hoverboards, Crispin Glover and a souped-up DeLorean sporting a flux capacitor, and Brokeback to the Future might just give Dark Knight a run for its money.

DVD Bonus Features: Deleted scenes -- including steamy DeLorean make-out sesh where overzealous groping accidentally depresses the gas pedal, sending Marty and Doc into the future to confront the tree of life a la The Fountain.
: Chocolate Rain

YouTube keyboardist Tay Zonday, nee Adam Nyerere Bahner, wowed audiences in 2007 with a keyboard-fueled baritone rendition of his original song, Chocolate Rain. His dorm room-to-Dr. Pepper endorsement deal is a success story that would make for a compelling tale for the after-school set.

DVD Bonus Features: All the Chocolate Rain covers that have surfaced on the net --- from Chad Vader to Green Day drummer Tre Cool.
: Battle at Kruger

The nearly nine-minute home video of nature gone wild would be even better in Imax. Think March of the Penguins meets Planet Earth, but with more action and narrated by excitable tourists seeing animals for the first time.

DVD Bonus Features: Whatever Happened to Baby Buffalo? follow-up finds him crashing with friends in Park Slope auditioning for Hepatitis PSAs and lampooning the entertainment business as "so phony."
: Potter Puppet Pals

No Harry Potter until 2009? No problem. Potterphiles could get their Hogwarts fix with these twisted marionette substitutes tackling a host of subjects, from sensuous potions lectures to wizardy angst. That is, until puberty makes the finger that plays Harry Potter too big to be believable and a success-induced identity crisis leads to some risqué hand modeling.
DVD Bonus Features: Behind the Couch featurette.
: Evolution of Dance

A bleak look into dancer Judson Laipply's fictionalized early life, called Dancer in the Dark, reveals loss, drug abuse and an early adulthood spent in a desolate Russian work camp, wrongfully accused. As the film's narrative finds Laipply rebuilding his life through his love of dance, leading towards the cathartic performance that would bring joy to almost a billion viewers across the world, the film suddenly cuts to the video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." The first feature length Rick Roll is born and audiences delight in encouraging friends to see it by saying it's "Oscar-worthy."

DVD Bonus Features: Clips of audience reactions in theaters as they are rolled.
