Starring:
Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Debra Messing, Eva Mendes
Review:
Updating a comedy classic is not a good idea. Case in point:
this misbegotten redo of Clare Booth Luce's 1936 play (and 1939
movie) about pampered Manhattan women who gossip about men who are
never seen. Think Sex and the City without the sex.
Murphy Brown creator Diane English has been trying to do
this movie since her sitcom went off the air in 1998. It's finally
here, and it's a major dud. A big-name cast of actresses gives it a
go, but everyone from Meg Ryan as the cheated-on wife to Eva Mendes
as the home-wrecking perfume girl struggles with a script that
resists being crowbarred into the 21st century. OK, the ladies do
more bonding than belittling each other, but the jokes barely
escape their lips before they wither and die. Ironically, it's
Murphy herself, Candice Bergen, in a cameo...
Rating:
1 Star

: Conveying the excitement people feel about music in a still image can be like describing sight to the blind. The 10 reader-elected finalists of our music photo contest may not make you hear music, but they expertly capture a musical moment. Blair takes home the gold with his photo "The Horn Player" at left. Click through the gallery to see the contestants who were nipping at his heels.

Since we had so many great photos that we thought should've received more votes, and because we love to anger readers with our selections, we've also compiled a Wired.com Editor's Choice Music Photo Gallery.

Our next twice-monthly photo contest is Heat. It's cold outside this winter and we need to warm our feet by your photographic fire. Check out the contest page for more information.

{NEWS > BREAKING NEWS} - Tesla Roadster Now Available With Warp Drive

No more than a few dozen people have been lucky enough to get their hands on a Tesla Roadster, but if any one of them wants something even more exclusive, the guys at Brabus can give their car warp drive.
 The
German tuning hausbest known for building tricked-out, souped-up Mercedes coupes and sedans went to town on a Roadster, decking it out with all manner of carbon-fiber gee-gaws, adding some lightweight wheels and slathering it with matte white paint. There wasn't much Brabus could do for the drivetrain ? it's not as if Brabus wants to start messing around with electric motors and lithium-ion batteries ? so it settled for installing what it calls a "space sound generator" to mimic the sound of a V8 engine, a race-tuned engine or what Brabus describes as "two futuristic soundscapes named 'Beam' and 'Warp.'"
We swear we're not making this up.
Brabus says the space sound generator was designed "to give the sports car a more exciting sound," and notes "the volume of the sound is dependent upon the momentary power output of the electric motor." In other words, the faster you go, the louder it gets. We have no idea what "beam" and "warp" sound like because Brabus didn't provide any MP3s, but we hope "beam" sounds like George Jetson's space car and "warp" sounds like a TIE fighter.
The silly science fiction extends to the interior, where Brabus installed "entrance lights shaped like futuristic space lights," whatever those are. That said, the rest of the interior looks great ? we love the white trim inserts, and the Alcantara dash is hot. Exterior tweaks include a carbon-fiber accents on the front apron, side air inlets and rear diffuser. There's a custom carbon-fiber wing, and those Brabus wheels (18 inches up front, 19 in the back) wrapped with low-rolling resistance Pirellis look sharp. Ditto the matte white paint.
Brabus tweaked the Tesla for the upcoming
Essen Motor Show, which is the German equivalent to the big
SEMA auto trade showhere in the states. No word on what the tuned Tesla will run, but if you can afford $109,000 for a stock Roadster, you probably aren't worried about it.

 Photos by Brabus.

{EUROPE > NEWS AND MEDIA} - Police gave no warning before De Menezes shooting, say witnesses

Tube passengers sitting near Jean Charles de Menezes yesterday told the inquest into his death that no warnings were shouted by armed police before they shot him seven times in the head.Speaking for the first time in public, the commuters described the moment officers boarded the train at Stockwell station, south London, on July 22 2005. Rachel Wilson, who was with her boyfriend, Ralph Livock, said at first she had thought the men were "playing a game" with a friend until she looked down and saw her hands spattered with blood.Livock said the couple had no idea whether the men on the train were police or terrorists. The couple's account, and those of other passengers, contradicted evidence given by firearms officers who told the hearing that they shouted "armed police" at De Menezes before opening fire. One officer said De Menezes moved towards him aggressively and he feared that he would detonate a bomb at any moment .Livock and Wilson recalled that the train stopped at Stockwell for longer than usual that morning. All of a sudden they heard somebody shouting "he's here" outside the train, before several casually dressed men armed with guns boarded their carriage. Livock said: "One of my initial thoughts was it was all a game and they were a group of lads who were just having a laugh - a very bad taste laugh but just having a game on the tube, because they were just dressed in jeans and T-shirts, but with firearms." Nicholas Hilliard QC, counsel to the inquest, asked Livock: "Had you heard anything said about police?" He replied: "No, certainly not. "And I remember that specifically because one of the conversations that Rachel and I had afterwards was that we had no idea whether these were police, whether they were terrorists, whether they were somebody else. We just had no idea." He added: "The thing that made me realise it wasn't a group of lads playing around or something else happening was when the first shot was fired." His girlfriend told the inquest the officers said nothing to identify themselves. Wilson said: "First I thought they were messing around. Then I thought they were terrorists and it was only when I left the carriage and somebody moved me gently out of the way that I figured they must be good guys. Apart from that, I just didn't know who they were." One man levelled a pistol at De Menezes but said nothing to him, Livock told the inquest. The Brazilian did not appear frightened but looked as if he was "waiting for somebody to tell him what was going on", the commuter said. At this point two police marksmen shot De Menezes seven times in the head at point-blank range, having mistaken him for Hussain Osman, one of the failed suicide bombers of the day before. Another commuter, Wesley Merrill, recalled that several of the men with guns were wearing police caps, but he could not remember hearing any of them say anything to De Menezes. After the shooting Livock and Wilson fled from the carriage, boarding a Victoria line train towards central London. They got off at Pimlico, where they asked a station attendant to contact the police for them. The hearing continues.Jean Charles de Menezesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Art work space in garden in San Francisco! This is a two room private studio for work only. The space has been used in the past for working with clay, metal, and painting- no need to worry about messing up the walls or floor! There is a sink in one of the rooms and access to a larger utility sink and bathroom. Located in the Portola neighborhood, just south of Bernal Heights, it is in a quiet area that is very sunny and rarely gets the summer fog. A comfortable space for working, it is at ground level with windows and opens onto a Wooden deck and flower garden, allowing you to work outside when you like. Both rooms open out onto the deck and have an opening inside joining them. The smaller room is about 10X10 and the other is about 10X12 and has a large closet. The space is available now. Please write with any questions or to discuss a time to come and see the space.

Thank you,

Monica

Art work space in garden in San Francisco! This is a two room private studio for work only. The space has been used in the past for working with clay, metal, and painting- no need to worry about messing up the walls or floor! There is a sink in one of the rooms and access to a larger utility sink and bathroom. Located in the Portola neighborhood, just south of Bernal Heights, it is in an area that is very sunny and rarely gets the summer fog.

Thank you,

Monica

MCM sez, "The trailer for my new show, 'RollBots' is up, and I'm stupidly proud of it. It's about a race of spherical bots that race around a city in the sky, and mainly about a kid named Spin who has to cope with being the only bot without a tribe. Spin's a new recruit at the FCPD, and when he's not keeping the peace on the cross-town RMS, he's got to stop things like the crontab from messing up time, or cope with the Do Right Module gumming up the works. Among other things. It's aimed at kids, but I think it will have a certain appeal to BB readers ;) It's is going to air in February on the CW4Kids, and on YTV in Canada." MCM is the guy who made the killer picture book about DRM and pigs, "Pig and the Box". Rollbots Teaser...
