Not long ago, it seemed music videos were doomed to go the way of the radio star. Cool bands hated making them, MTV had stopped showing them, and innovative directors like Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry had long since moved on. Then, somewhere between OK Go's treadmill-dancing "Here It Goes Again" on YouTube (more than 37 million views) and Feist's "1234" choreography lesson turned iPod ad, the music video made a comeback — and launched a new generation of directors more at home with URL than TRL. Meet the next wave of filmmakers and their greatest hits — so far.

Cat Solen

Signature style: Art-school aesthetic on the cheap.

Key video: Bright Eyes, "At the Bottom of Everything." As a jetliner plummets toward the ocean, the passengers gleefully embrace, and smiling stop-motion clouds play catch with the plane. "I want to keep making videos because they're artistic yet appeal to a mass audience," Solen says.

Rik Cordero

Signature style: Urban tales with a grime-noir twist.

Key video: Nas, "Be a Nigger Too." A nine-minute epic of narrative arcs within arcs about the most loaded of words, with nearly every directorial technique thrown in. "It used to be the only outlet for non-mainstream videos were street DVDs," Cordero says. "When YouTube came along, we just ran with it like purse snatchers."

Matthew Cullen

Signature style: Technical chops and enough whimsy to choke a dramatic prairie dog.

Key video: Weezer, "Pork and Beans." YouTube semi-celebs from Tay Zonday to the geographically challenged beauty queen are gathered into one joyous mega-meme. "The Web is the new home for the music video," says Cullen, who's currently making viral shorts with Tiger Woods for EA. "MTV has become an afterthought."

Vincent Moon

Signature style: Home movies of hipster bands busking the streets of Paris.

Key video: Animal Collective, "Taste." Psych-folk weirdos roll down the street in a shopping cart singing garbled vocals into cardboard cups. Moon's video blog, La Blogotheque, features impromptu performances in odd places by bands like the Shins, Beirut, and the National. "I'm trying to fight what TV has made us in the past 20 years," he says. "I want to use these new screens to communicate with the world."

Vincent Morisset

Signature style: Interactive Flash apps set to music.

Key video: Arcade Fire, "Neon Bible." Clicking on the screen while frontman Win Butler sings causes him to perform sleights of hand with spooky expressionistic flair. "When I was a kid," Morisset says, "I paid 50 cents for an MTV phone contest to see 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' a second time. So the immediacy of online is a plus."

Keith Schofield

Signature style: Visual gags worthy of Chuck Jones.

Key video: Brighton Port Authority, "Toe Jam." Fatboy Slim tapped Schofield to shoot his new supergroup's first single (featuring Dizzee Rascal and David Byrne). In it, a bunch of shag-carpet-loving swingers dance nude, Busby Berkeley-style, but it's the censor bars over the naughty bits that steal the show. "It's great," says Schofield, who's working on videos for CSS, Ladyhawke, and the Ting Tings. "You can make a video about pop culture or videogames or Linux, and then it goes viral."

{LIBRARIES > WEBLOGS} - It's not only rock'n'roll, baby

As usual, my blog posting comes far too late. A few months ago, this could have been an encouragement to go to Brussels and see an interesting exhibition, but typically me, I write about it when it's almost over. Two days left, to be precise.

So I was in Belgium last weekend, mostly to meet friends (like Zoe and Quarsan), see a Sun Kil Moon concert and gain weight by eating lots of fries, mussels, carbonades and stoemp, but particularly bad weather on Sunday persuaded me to see two exhibitions -- apart from the Pavilion of Temporary Happiness (made of 43,000 empty beer crates -- so much about temporary happiness) there was of course the Bozar (Palais des Beaux Arts), which is always good for interesting exhibitions.

It's not only rockn'roll, baby features art exhibits by rock musicians -- Alan Vega, Antony, Bent van Looy (Das Pop), Bianca Casady (Cocorosie), Brian Eno, Chicks on Speed, David Byrne, Devendra Banhart, Fischerspooner, Jonsi Birgisson (Riceboy Sleeps), Kembra Pfahler, Kyle Field, Laurie Anderson, Miss Kittin, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeah's), Patti Smith, Pete Doherty, The Kills, The Residents and Yoko Ono, an obvious concept if you consider how many musicians started out as art students.

Mixing the old and the young, the established and the upcoming, the settled and the unsettling made for an interesting show of strikingly varied quality -- enter a room and you'll immediately notice what and how much a certain musician has to say and is able to express through visual arts. Some of the exhibits were stunning, others seemed oddly flat and void of substance.

Pieces that impressed me were of course Yoko Ono's massive installation "Ex It" with trees coming out of coffins; Nick Zinner's photographs and Brian Eno's meditative "77 million paintings". David Byrne's tree diagrams were funny in his usual way; the Residents' photographs were good, but known from album cover art; Devendra Banhart's drawings intriguing if a bit schizophrenic; and The Kills' video installation and polaroids surprisingly effective.

Eno's "77 million paintings" is an application of his music to the visual arts by presenting a seemingly static, but really very slowly changing image. You don't really notice that anything is changing, but after a while you realize that you are staring at a completely different image.

And why was I not surprised that Pete Doherty made his drawings using his own blood? They were better than I expected though.

It's not only rock'n'roll, baby, 20 June to 12 September 2008, Bozar, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, 1000 Brussels, Belgium. Catalogue available from Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com.

Our retrospective of favorite Boing Boing tv editions concludes today in a visit with music legend David Byrne, at the launch of his musical installation Playing the Building. This episode was a blast for cast and crew alike, and we're revisiting it today to remind you that Byrne is about to start a Fall US tour to support his recently-released collaboration with Brian Eno, Everything that Happens will Happen Today. Snip from that project's website: Byrne and Eno began their artistic relationship in the late seventies with 3 Talking Heads albums, followed by their groundbreaking album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. The album is their first together in 30 years, and is available in deliciously DRM-free digital download. It's beautiful. Photos from the BBtv "Playing the Building" shoot, below -- and in the episode -- by Clayton Cubitt. (Special thanks to Danielle Spencer, and Jason Wishnow). Previously on Boing Boing: David Byrne and Brian Eno's kick ass new album in a million downloadable and physical formats...

David Byrne and Brian Eno's new album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" is up this week in a wide variety of formats, ranging from a free, DRM-free stream of the whole disc to a bunch of digital delivery options (320kbps MP3, Flac, or digital+CD) and a gorgeous little "deluxe package" with bonus tracks and a package designed by Stefan Sagmeister. Byrne is literally my favorite recording artist of all time. I own the whole canon, in multiple formats, and a quick perusal of my top-rated MP3s in my music player, Banshee, tells me that he makes up more than a quarter of my favorite music. I have never been disappointed by anything he's done, and I've just bought myself the deluxe set and I'm listening to the stream and absolutely loving it. What a great day this is shaping up to be. Everything That Happens Will Happen Today...

Www.Boingboing.Net - David Byrne and Brian Eno's new album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" is up this week in a wide variety of formats, ranging from a free, DRM-free stream of the whole disc to a bunch of digital delivery options (320kbps MP3, Flac, or digital+CD) and a gorgeous little "deluxe package" with bonus tracks and a package designed by Stefan Sagmeister.

So call me cynical. I really didn't think the Munsters Halloween Village was going to do very well, because really. Who decorates the inside of their house? Do people really invite trick-or-treaters into their house? Well, I suppose people do throw halloween costume parties...

The point of that whole bit just sets me up to say, "I was wrong." The Munsters Village is the third bestseller on our site.

It's done so well that Bradford is already humming with new ideas for next Halloween. :)

In other news, I was perusing the public library yesterday (when was the last time you went to a library? Until yesterday, it was two years for me!), and I came across the book: "The Urge to Splurge: A Social History of Shopping." If you've been with our program for a long time, you may know that I'm fascinated by consumerism. Check it out if you get a chance, it's a good read. Author is Laura Byrne Paquet. Here's a library of congress link because I'm not linking you to Amazon, sheesh. :)
