<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - David Byrne and Brian Eno's kick ass new album in a million downloadable and physical formats</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/david-byrne-and-brian-eno-s-kick-ass-new-album-in-a-20080868526.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain"> David Byrne and Brian Eno's new album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" is up this week in a wide variety of formats, ranging from a free, DRM-free stream of the whole disc to a bunch of digital delivery options (320kbps MP3, Flac, or digital+CD) and a gorgeous little "deluxe package" with bonus tracks and a package designed by Stefan Sagmeister. Byrne is literally my favorite recording artist of all time. I own the whole canon, in multiple formats, and a quick perusal of my top-rated MP3s in my music player, Banshee, tells me that he makes up more than a quarter of my favorite music. I have never been disappointed by anything he's done, and I've just bought myself the deluxe set and I'm listening to the stream and absolutely loving it. What a great day this is shaping up to be. Everything That Happens Will Happen Today...

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Bruce Conner, filmmaker, Beat artist (RIP)</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/bruce-conner-filmmaker-beat-artist-rip-20080739812.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Bruce Conner, a pioneering collage filmmaker and Beat-era assemblage artist, died yesterday. He was 74. Conner is best known for his experimental cut-up films made from found footage and TV advertisements. In the decades since his first gallery shows in the 1950s, Conner collaborated with the likes of DEVO, Terry Riley, Brian Eno, and David Byrne. From Wikipedia: Conner?s first and possibly most famous film, entitled A Movie (1958), combined his thrift store hunting process and his use of still photography. It is referred to as the piece that brought Conner to notoriety. In skillfully editing stock footage, Conner created abstract metaphors of mankind's violence. He subsequently made nearly two dozen non-narrative experimental films. While Conner was living in Massachusetts in 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Conner filmed the television coverage of the event (near Kennedy's birthplace) and edited and re-edited the footage with stock footage into another meditation on violence which he titled Report. The film was issued several times as it was re-edited. According to Conner's friend and fellow film-maker Stan Brakhage in his book Film at Wit's End, Conner was signed into a New York gallery contract in the early 1960s, which stipulated stylistic and personal restraint beyond Conner's freewheeling nature. Conner reacted by attending openings, only to move among the crowd wordlessly pinning buttons that read "I am Bruce Conner" or "I am not Bruce Conner" to their clothes. Many send-ups of artistic authorship followed, including a five page piece Conner had published in a major art publication in which Conner's making of a peanut butter, banana, bacon, lettuce, and Swiss cheese sandwich was reported step-by-step in great detail, with numerous photographs, as though it were a work of art. <summary type="text/plain"> No Wave is a new photo and oral history book documenting the highly-influential art-punk scene in New York City from 1976-1980. The book was put together by Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore and indie rock journalist Byron Coley. NYC's KS Art gallery is holding an exhibition tied to the show of photos, paintings, sculptures, and ephemera from that seminal scene. The three photos above are by Laura Levine who kindly sent them to me as a sneak preview. Top right, DNA (1981); bottom left, Alan Vega (1983); bottom right, Glenn Branca (1981). Click for bigger images. The opening party is tomorrow, Friday, June 13, from 6 to 8pm. Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and Information will perform at the Knitting Factory across the street. The gallery show runs until July 10. From the book description: This is the first book to visually chronicle the collision of art and punk in the New York underground of 1976 to 1980. This in-depth look at punk rock, new wave, experimental music, and the avant-garde art movement of the 70s and 80s focuses on the true architects No Wave from James Chance to Lydia Lunch to Glenn Branca, as well as the luminaries that intersected the scene, such as David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, and Richard Hell. This rarely documented scene was the creative stomping ground of young artists and filmmakers from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jim Jarmusch, as well as the musical genesis for the post-punk explosions of Sonic Youth. Thurston Moore and Byron Coley have selected 150 unforgettable images, most of which have never been published previously, and compiled hundreds of hours of personal interviews to create an oral history of the movement, providing a never-before-seen exploration and celebration of No Wave. <title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - BBtv -- David Byrne: Playing the Building</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/bbtv-david-byrne-playing-the-building-20080630726.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain"> In today's edition of Boing Boing tv, music legend David Byrne transforms an entire NYC building into a giant musical instrument, and Xeni joins him inside for a BBtv tour. Playing the Building is Byrne's latest sonic innovation, and morphs the century-old Battery Maritime Building into a clanging, vibrating sound sculpture. In this installation, the former Talking Heads co-founder blurs the boundaries between the creators and consumers of culture. He explains: Devices [have been] attached to the building's structure ? to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes ? and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument. Byrne sees music as deeply embedded within the natural sounds that surround us every day, and believes "anyone can be a writer, artist, or musician if they want to." Playing the Building continues through August 10, 2008 at 10 South Street, New York, NY; open every Friday through Sunday, noon - 6pm. Admission is free of charge. Link to Boing Boing tv post with discussion and downloadable video. (Photos used in this episode are by Clayton Cubitt. Special thanks to Danielle Spencer, and Jason Wishnow). <td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Www.Boingboing.Net</span> - In today's edition of Boing Boing tv, music legend David Byrne transforms an entire NYC building into a giant musical instrument, and Xeni joins him inside for a BBtv tour. Update: Byrne will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Webby Awards tonight....

The point of that whole bit just sets me up to say, "I was wrong." The Munsters Village is the third bestseller on our site.

It's done so well that Bradford is already humming with new ideas for next Halloween. :)

In other news, I was perusing the public library yesterday (when was the last time you went to a library? Until yesterday, it was two years for me!), and I came across the book: "The Urge to Splurge: A Social History of Shopping." If you've been with our program for a long time, you may know that I'm fascinated by consumerism. Check it out if you get a chance, it's a good read. Author is Laura Byrne Paquet. Here's a library of congress link because I'm not linking you to Amazon, sheesh. :)
