<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Round Up</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/round-up-2008106927.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">My time is almost over and there's still gobs of stuff I wanted to share with you. So here's a brief list of things I would feel just terrible if I didn't let you know about. 1. Robots and Monsters: A Charitable Menagerie, is back. They launched in 2007 to fundraise for SF AIDS Foundation, and now they're relaunching to support the EFF. For fifty dollars, Joe Alterio or another fabulous artist will pen a custom robot or monster for you - defined by three words you supply - and send it to your door. You get a cool picture and the EFF gets fifty bucks to help keep the net a happy and good place. 2. Scott Draves Software Artworks, 1992-2008. This short film chronicles the work of software artist Scott Draves. And it's pretty cool. Dreams in High Fidelity. 3. Consumatron. Do you know this guy? He writes down and reviews everything he buys. It's kind of obsessive, but tells a story. 4. Trajal Harrell Dance Style is a totally different approach to dance - an effort to rewrite the language of dance by using real world movement (from fashion show walks to bar room swagger) instead of whatever that stuff is we usually think of as "dance." His performances are infrequent, but there's one coming up this month at DanceTheater Workshop and if you're near NYC I'd suggest you be there. 5. The Atheon: A Temple of Science for Rational Belief. If I were going to join a church, this would probably be it. It's like a church for brights, but it's not as serious or anti-God as Richard Dawkins. Just an effort to make faith rational - but still fun and inspiring. Douglas Rushkoff is a guest blogger....

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - MC Frontalot's Final Boss: nerdcore par excellence</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/mc-frontalot-s-final-boss-nerdcore-par-excellence-2008108125.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">MC Frontalot's new nerdcore album, Final Boss, is a perfect, catchy collection of raps and sketches about video-games, Japanese manga fandom, voting machines, and other important subjects. Of especial note is a completely, convulsively hilarious sketch with Wil Wheaton about Wil and Frontalot's respective career-choices. The CD's out in a month or so, but if you pre-order it now, you get immediate delivery of the CD in MP3 form, with a lyrics sheet and hi-rez versions of the art. Now these are lyrics: I?ve got a new dance called The Margaret Thatcher. It?ll get in your pants, you?d better call the dispatcher of deliverers of increased pants awesomeness. Get the awesomest pants they offer. Preposterous shoes are also required for the moves, although sensible footwear or barefoot behooves and all attire?s optional. You only ever do it when there?s nobody watching you. Do it. Do The Margaret Thatcher. Just do it. Do The Margaret Thatcher, y?all. Here?s a little something for the wallflowers in the room, all my people at the party for whom the dance don?t come natural. Enhance your stature. Fall into the routine they call The Margaret Thatcher, y?all. Do The Margaret Thatcher. Do The Margaret Thatcher, y?all. Step One: Wiggle, wobble, wriggle, coddle your young, intensify your ennui, then before you get done, put your left foot over to the left if you dare, then pretend you got scared, then point at your hair. MC Frontalot's Final Boss (Thanks, Quinn!)...

<td width="100%" style="font:9pt Verdana,Arial,Sans-serif;vertical-align:top;"><span style="color:#808080;font-variant:small-caps;">Www.Boingboing.Net</span> - MC Frontalot's new nerdcore album, Final Boss, is a perfect, catchy collection of raps and sketches about video-games, Japanese manga fandom, voting machines, and other important subjects.

<summary type="text/plain">Cost:  $700 per month, plus ½ utilities.  Deposit is last month’s rent--total move-in is $1,400. Rent includes internet. Available November 1st.

The apartment is a 2 bedroom, one bathroom (shower stall, no bath). It is a lower level apartment (not quite a basement apartment, but it is three steps down), and a washer and dryer included. There are lots of windows and it gets a fair amount of light.

Other than the bathroom, the common areas include a living room, kitchenette, breakfast nook. Not a lot of furnishings yet—I just moved in myself and am looking to put together a really nice, homey living space over the next few months.

The room for rent is 11 x 14, has tile floors, a closet, window that gets a fair amount of afternoon/evening light.

Your other roommate will be a 33 y.o. male who works in San Francisco for a non-profit arts organization. I love live theater and dance, as well as most other forms of art. I am out a lot, but do like having people over for dinner and the occasional movie night, and my roommates would always have a standing invitation to join us.

Ideally, you are the kind of person who would be open to on movie nights and/or an occasional dinner, but someone who would also have a full social and professional life of their own. Vegan/vegetarian is preferred. I am looking for someone who values clear communication and who is interested in creating a positive, warm living environment. We don’t need to be BFF, but I don’t want to feel like I’m living with a complete stranger.

The landlords live upstairs with their two elementary school age children. They are friends of mine and are really awesome people, so I am looking for a roommate who doesn’t live the type of lifestyle that involves throwing up in the garden at 2am on a regular basis.

About 10 minutes to Ashby Station BART, right around the corner from the South Berkeley Library Branch, and just a few blocks away from Berkeley Bowl.

No pets (well, fish are okay, and maybe birds)

No drugs, no smoking. No couples please,the apartment is big enough, but it isn't that big.

Thanks for reading my post. E-mail if you are interested. Good luck in your search!

<title>{INTERNET &gt; W} - That's Not 'Love' In the Air, Mister</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/computers/internet/on-the-web/weblogs/personal/w/that-s-not-love-in-the-air-mister-2008101913.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">
        Being under the weather last week, I nearly got away with forgot to mention an embarrassing little adventure I had on Valentine's Day. Some days, I don't even have to leave my office to dork up the joint. Whoopee.

There I was on Thursday afternoon, weeping softly at my desk, as is my usual custom. To cheer my mood -- and take my mind off my throbbing sinuses -- I was listening to a few MP3s. Specifically, I had Fatboy Slim's Better Living Through Chemistry queued up, and playing loud. Maybe I was in a techno mood. Maybe I was comforted by the promise in the title -- a little NyQuil (or tequila, or possibly lye) could be just the ticket to a happier, phlegm-free future. Whatever the reason, those catchy tunes were the only bright spot in a sad, sniffly, scratchy-throated afternoon.

"It's uptempo, with a good beat. If I could dance at all without looking like an epileptic ostrich, I could dance to it."

At least, they were. Until I re-learned, for the umpeenth time, that timing. Is everything.

(Oh, and don't worry if you're not into ten-year-old techno electro nu break funk jungle house bass beats, or whatever the hell such songs are classified as nowadays. I'll walk you through the scant bits of info that are germane to the story.

I promise not to bop or crunk or beatbox or anything along the way. Lord knows no one wants to see that. Also, I could break a hip.)

So, there I was. Alone in the office. Weeping. Listening. Sniffling. Minding my own business. After a while, the song "Give the Po' Man a Break" came on. I like the song. It's uptempo, with a good beat. If I could dance at all without looking like an epileptic ostrich, I could dance to it. Good tune.

But Fatboy's lyrics are not the highlight, so much. In fact, the only words in the entire song are those in the title. Three or four minutes in, the first vocal sample emerges:

'Gee po manna break! Gee po manna break! Gee po manna break! Gee po manna break!'

No, Mr. Slim isn't revered for his enunciation, either. As a genre, the techno electro nu break funk jungle house bass beaters aren't typically 'Hooked on Phonics', as it were. It's usually easier to just call the tunes instrumentals, and treat the lyrics, such as they are, as another instrument or rhythm. That's what I do, anyway. But folks less experienced with the music might have a different view.

Someone like, say, the new kid who started working in our office last week. Turns out he -- who I gather isn't so experienced with the Fatboy Slim oeuvre -- needed to ask me a question that Thursday afternoon. So he walked into my office. While "Give the Po' Man a Break" was playing.

None of which is all that troubling -- except for one thing. Fatboy, you see, being an artiste, wasn't content to simply loop the same vocal sample over and over and over through the second half of his ditty. Instead, he reprised it in shorter and shorter versions -- treating it like another instrument or rhythm, just like I said. Me and Slim, we're on the same page here.

The new kid, not so much.

Of course, it might have helped had he poked his head into my office during the actual instrumental part. Or the part where the whole phrase is looped, as above. Or even the next step along, when the tune shouts:

'Gee po manna! Gee po manna! Gee po manna! Gee po manna!'

That would have sounded like gibberish, sure. But the new kid would have probably figured I was listening to some funky Latvian pop music, or playing MP3s backward, or something. I have a bit of a reputation for doing weird shit around the office.

I know. Go figure.

But he didn't walk in at any of those points in the song. Instead, he came in toward the end, when the sample is really chopped down and rapid-fire. So when he appeared in the doorway, my speakers were veritably blasting:

'Gee po! Gee po! Gee po! Gee po! Gee po! Gee po! Gee po! Gee po!'

Which, to the naive ear unwise in the ways of the late-'90s techno milieu, sounds an awful lot like a guy shouting:

'Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn! Gay porn!'

At eighty decibels. Over a pulsing backbeat. On my speakers.

I didn't realize the misinterpretation right away, of course. It took a while to deduce, from the way the kid opened his mouth to ask a question, then stared wide-eyed at my computer for a bit, and then backed slowly out of the room. But I eventually figured it out, and realized how it must have sounded from his standpoint. So now I've got a whole new genre of odd stares and wacky rumors to work through, no doubt.

On the bright side, the new guy hasn't been back to ask me a question for a whole week. Looks like this po' man got a break, after all.

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; RENTALS} - Room Available in Great 4 Bedroom Flat! (alamo square / nopa) $768</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/business-and-economy/real-estate/rentals/room-available-in-great-4-bedroom-flat-alamo-square-2008105301.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">The house: We live on the top floor (of three) of a huge old building, built in 1905. It's got all the old detail you want and sometimes it feels like it's just barely holding on. But it's a sturdy old place, full of life and we love it.

The rooms are huge. Seriously, really big. Tall ceilings throughout (which is important, as one of our housemates is 6'7"!!)and hardwood floors in the hallway and all the bedrooms. The layout is faily typical with the living room, kitchen rooms (yes there are two kitchen rooms) and bathrooms (there's only one bathroom, but the toilet is in a seperate room from the shower and sink, which is nice when everyone is trying to get ready in the morning)are all at one end of the house while the four bedrooms are on the other. The living room is large and currently has two couches and a recliner. The recliner isn't going anywhere, but if you have a nice couch, we're happy to part with either of the ones we currently have. We also have access to the roof, which is a really nice bonus when the fog hasn't rolled in yet.

Location: Centrally located like nobody's business. We are within five blocks of the following major bus lines:
5 Fulton (1/2 block)
31 Balboa (block &amp; 1/2)
21 Hayes (4 blocks)
38 Masonic (1 block)
24 Divisadero (5 blocks)
We are also a block a half from Lucky's, five blocks from Trader Joes, five blocks from all the cool stuff on Divisadero (Bar 821, Little Star Pizza, Waizema, Farmer's Market on weekends, Fly Bar, Madrone, Herbivore, ect). Five blocks to the Panhandle. Ten blocks to Haight Street. A block and half to Papalote and Poleng Lounge. It's pretty much the best neighborhood ever. If you have a car, street parking is fairly easy. I've never had to park further than two blocks away.

Who We Are:
-Jeff, 28, Teacher. Jeff is tall, hilarious and likes to dance. He doesn't want me to describe him, but too bad. He's really a good guy and has a biting sense of humor. He's fun to live with and easy to be around.

-Jenny, 25, Non-Profit Do-Gooder. Jenny is the newest member of our little family, having only moved in a month ago. She is from New York and is amazingly sweet, genuine, funny, super smart and a real joy to have around. She likes to ride her bike around town and is enjoying getting to know San Francisco.

-Amber (that's me) 32, Non-Profit Office Manager/Massage Therapy Student/Magazine Editor. I'm not home too much, but when I am, I am pretty easy to be with. I am funny, smart, sarcastic and generally a happy person.

We all get along and actually like one another. We'd like someone who can fit into that dynamic. We go out together sometimes, but for the most part we watch some tv or read or play games. I know there are those who hate tv...if you are one of those folks, this may not be a good fit for you. While it's not our life, the tv or a movie is usually on in the living room in the evenings.

Stipulations:
We all drink, so if you're sober this isn't the right place for you. This IS NOT a party house, however. This is our home, and we are adults and we'd all like to live with other sane but funny people who have their shit together. Amber smokes a little but never in the house. She also smokes a little pot, but again never in the house. There are no hard core drugs now and we do not want any. There is also NO DRAMA. We like eachother, we hang out, and if there is an issue, we discuss it and resolve it. End of story. As much as I'd love to have a furry friend around, there are no pets allowed, sorry.

You:
We would prefer a man, if only to even out the balance, but are open to cool girls too. We would prefer someone in our general age range, but again, are open to whoever, we just want the right fit.
You can be gay, straight, bi, whatever...we don't care. Just don't be having sex in the kitchen. You can be any race, we love everyone.
We'd prefer it if you had a good steady job that paid you enough to cover the rent ($768) and bills ($75ish per person per month). We'd like it if you had a life...one that you liked and spent time living. We're all busy people and would like to live with someone who had their own things going on. Again, NO DRAMA. Be sane-ish, funny, smart, chill and creative. Don't be a douchebag.

Details:
Move in November 1. Cost: First Month's Rent to be paid to Jeff. Deposit ($768) to be paid to our outgoing roomate.

If you have a ton of furniture, we don't have much storage, so that could be an issue. We also live on the top floor, so moving in up three flights of stairs can be hard work.

We'd love to meet you this weekend, so please let me know your Saturday availablity. Please also send me information about you and why you might like to live here.

Cool. </summary>
