The room: About 12ft by 15ft. Medium closet. Connected to shared bathroom through one door and kitchen through the other. Big window to outside, double-paned for insulation and with screen to keep bugs out. The apartment: Bottom floor of a duplex. Old and a bit creaky, with some peeling paint. No cable TV, but with all the great DVDs out there these days, who needs cable? The neighborhood: Good central location for people with cars and bikes, but not quite so good for walkers. 25 minute walk to Ashby BART, 20 minute walk to Emeryville shops. Location is 62nd St, between Baker and Herzog. The roommate: Uses half of the living room as work space in exchange for paying all of the utilities. Sometimes out of town to work on movies or attend film festivals with red carpets and fun stuff like that. Goes to Burning Man and other big events only when she is working on projects, which is quite often. Chatty if you want to be, but also totally independent. Likes beer, vodka, and tea. And brownies. And meat. Halfway between typical woman and man on the messiness spectrum, but always respectful. Doesn't mind noise (and neither do the upstairs neighbors). The neighbors: Upstairs: a massage therapist (yes, you can go right up there for a massage) and her computer-geek boyfriend, who also have a lot of cats and are very welcoming if you just want to go up for a visit. Behind the house: a law student. Law students are really, really busy, so it doesn't matter what else I tell you because you won't see her. Why it was a good place for me: I'm a musician and was often practicing in my room until as late as midnight on a school night, and nobody ever had a problem with that. I found the cats to be comforting during tough times. My roommate didn't mind hearing my thoughts, whether they ranged from hyper-liberal to old-fashioned to hyper-critical to warm-and-fuzzy. You: Hmm . . . If you run in the creative circles, that's probably a good thing, but if you're just easygoing, that's great. You've changed a kitty litter box before, or always wanted to. You are male, female, or anything else. You can just as well be highly motivated as clinically depressed. Just be reasonable. The place is available September 1st.
