<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - Ace Quantum Mechanics &mdash; the Reality TV Way</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/ace-quantum-mechanics-mdash-the-reality-tv-way-2008091745.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">

With CERN's Large Hadron Collider finally coming online, watercoolers around the world will soon be abuzz with talk of Higgs bosons, gluons, and other mind-blowing subatomic thingies. How to keep track of all that quantum fluff? It's easier than you think. Fans of shows like Survivor, American Idol, Top Chef, or America's Next Top Model already have the tools they need to wrap their heads around the fundamental bits in our universe. Turns out, if you understand reality TV, you can understand reality.

	Gluons (high-powered producers)

	Gluons are the Donald Trumps, Tyra Bankses, and Mark Burnetts of the subatomic world. Just as these executive producers (often doubling as onscreen overlords) dictate the rules and force contestants into tightly knit alliances for survival, gluons wield what's called the strong nuclear force, impelling quarks to clump together into the neutrons and protons of an atom's nucleus.

	Quarks (contestants)

	There are six types of quark, arbitrarily named up, down, top, bottom, charm, and strange. Think of them as the personality types that make every reality show go: the gay one, the jock, the bumpkin, the minority, the brainiac, and the drunken train-wreck girl. They always form alliances (called hadrons), and, well, they work best in threesomes. Hot!

	Higgs boson (lasting fame)

	We know the Higgs boson particle must exist &mdash; it's why matter has mass. But physicists have been unable to observe it. Have folks like Kelly Clarkson found the Higgs boson of reality TV &mdash; enduring stardom? Let's hope so. Because like the real Higgs boson, if lasting fame isn't possible, the whole Theory of Everything will need to be reconsidered.

	Photons (non-judging hosts)

	Photons carry electromagnetism, which bonds electrons to nuclei, and generally keep the excitement level up. Zooming around at the speed of light, these energetic particles hold the whole shebang together &mdash; just like Ryan Seacrest, Idol's charismatic liaison between judges, contestants, and viewers.

	Leptons (non-hosting judges)

	Many shows have a panel of regulars that sit on the sidelines and observe. This is the lepton family. Some, like electrons, matter (Tom Colicchio).Some, like muons, are overblown and unstable (Simon Cowell). Others, like neutrinos, pass through without ever making contact with reality (Paula Abdul).

	W and Z bosons (surprise guests)

	W and Z bosons carry the weak nuclear force, which causes other particles to decay. These are like the parents, ex-lovers, and others who pop into a show merely to wreak havoc. Think Flavor of Love's Tiffany Pollard, aka New York, who returned in season two to terrorize anew.

<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Five years with the master of Pac-Man, by Joshua Bearman</title>

<summary type="text/plain"> Joshua Bearman says: Let it be known that anyone interested in 8,000 words about Billy Mitchell, the world champion of Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Burgertime, and many other arcade games, need look no further than the July issue of Harper's, where an article about such appears. Perhaps you are thinking: but my Harper's subscription ran out and since it's now August the July issue is long gone from stands! This is true. Which is why the article is available HERE AS A PDF. And my apologies for being about six weeks behind on my mostly non-operative blog. This article was many years in the making, and was begun long before I wound up working on King of Kong. (BTW: King of Kong fans, rejoice! There is another whole dimension to the competitive classic gaming realm to be found here.) But the article came out while I happened to be out of the country getting married! This was also many years in the making and even more exciting, and so Billy Mitchell appearing in Harper's sort of snuck past me. But don't let my momentary inattention fool you: this is likely the most readable and entertaining look at the metaphysical implications of competitive Pac Man yet to appear! Slate's endorsement: "Best Culture Piece" of the month. Five years with the master of Pac-Man, by Joshua Bearman...

<title>{NORTH AMERICA &gt; RENTALS} - Great Location, Great Roommate :) Room Avail. Aug. 16th (san jose west) $700</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/north-america/united-states/california/metro-areas/san-francisco-bay-area/business-and-economy/real-estate/rentals/great-location-great-roommate-room-avail-aug-16th-20080782048.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">I have a 10x11 bedroom with its own bathroom coming available August 16th. My two-story condo is located in the Campbell/West San Jose area, right down the street from Valley Fair and Santana Row as well as downtown Campbell in the other direction, a great location, near 280, 880, and 17.

About me: I'm 34, a teacher, clean (but not anal about it!), and my schedule during the week is usually that I'm home after 7 to eat dinner and/or chill in front of the TV (Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance... House is pretty good too, and I still love Friends and Seinfeld!). I'm very active, I love hiking, playing tennis, running, going to the gym, etc. so it would be awesome if you were as well but of course not necessary. Over the weekend, I am usually away wakeboarding/snowboarding or on some other trip or I'm up in the city. I still like to go out to the bars and go dancing at the clubs once in a while but most of my friends live in San Francisco, so my place is usually pretty quiet. Let me also say that I am very NORMAL!!! :)

About you: female working professional in your upper 20's to upper 30's, responsible, knows how to clean up after yourself, co-exists well, and respects other people's privacy and space. Please, no drama You should be friendly and social, I want to have a relaxing living environment, I don't want to live with someone who will lock herself in her room as soon as she gets home! And although I would want you to be comfortable and feel that you can bring people over, I prefer that you not have a boyfriend who will sleep here consistently (once in a while would be fine), my place is too small for a "third roommate," sorry!

I'm charging $700/month on a month-to-month basis (not including utilities). In addition, I would require you to pay a $150 deposit, refundable at move-out minus any cleaning or repair costs. If you're interested, please contact me and we can discuss any other questions you might have!!!</summary>
