Review:
First, a little scorekeeping: Ang Lee's thoughtful, Freudian
Hulk in 2003 was nowhere near as bad as its rep. And Louis
Letterier's proudly pea-brained The Incredible Hulk is
nowhere near incredible. In fact, in its rush to deliver a constant
rush of action it forgets to think at all. But the latest spin on
the Marvel comic-book hero delivers the popcorn goods. I like what
Marvel is doing since it took over its franchise business from
Hollywood starting with Jon Favreau's smart and splendid Iron
Man. The overqualified casting of Robert Downey, Jr., Jeff
Bridges, Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow paid mucho dividends,
as it does in The Incredible Hulk.
Edward Norton is the ideal livewire to plug into the role of
Bruce Banner, the scientist with such a fire inside that his rage
takes...

<title>{INTERNET &gt; GOOGLE} - Students surf  their way to success</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/computers/internet/searching/search-engines/google/students-surf-their-way-to-success-2008089876.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Early on in my career at Google I was approached by a former professor of mine, Jamie Murphy, who was eager to give his students hands-on exposure to online marketing. Apart from delivering a great learning experience, Jamie wanted to make sure that his students would leave university with skills they could take directly into the workforce.Together, Jamie and I recruited a panel of professors from all over the globe and came up with the Google Online Marketing Challenge. Student teams had to identify a local business with a website, but no experience of online marketing, and then were given free Google AdWords vouchers worth the equivalent of US$200. The student teams worked with the local business to set up an AdWords account and structure an online marketing campaign which would increase web traffic and sales for the local business. The teams had three weeks to run the campaign and had to submit their campaign report to a panel of international academic judges.Today we're announcing the winners: an innovative team from the University of Western Australia who worked with an indoor rock-climbing school that scaled the heights and scooped the global prize. The winners will be whisked off to Mountain View, California for a tour of the Googleplex and meet with the creators of AdWords and other executives. To help them in their ongoing studies, each team member will also receive an Apple MacBook Pro.L to R: Dr. Fang Liu, Glen Linthorne (from the partner business),Victor Tsen (hanging), Amy Smith, Aaron Balm, and Lauren Bobridge. Absent: Anna Usikov. There were also three regional winners, including students from Pennsylvania State University, who won in the fierce Americas field, while a team from the Universität Bern in Switzerland beat some impressive competition to win for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The Asia Pacific winners came from the Australian Graduate School of Management with a skillful campaign for a small specialty cake business (actually based in California).These four teams were clearly deserving winners, but the enthusiasm all the students and professors showed for the challenge was inspiring. We initially expected slightly more than 1,000 students to take part, and were thrilled when c. 8,500 students from 47+ countries put their marketing skills to the test.The success of the challenge and the positive feedback we've had from both professors and students was more than we had hoped for. As Dr. Fang Liu, who taught the winning team, notes: ?The Online Marketing Challenge offers a great opportunity for students to develop their skills and experience in online marketing. Local businesses also benefit as the AdWords campaigns have helped promote their business to a wider community. I feel absolutely thrilled that one of my student teams is the global winner." We're delighted to have worked with professors to find a fun and innovative way to introduce online marketing into the university curriculum. And we're happy to say the Challenge will carry on next year, and we hope it will go from strength to strength. Here are more details on the Challenge and our winners.Posted by Lee Hunter, Product Marketing Manager

<title>{NEWS &gt; BREAKING NEWS} - July 28, 1858: Fingerprints Go Official</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/news/breaking-news/july-28-1858-fingerprints-go-official-20080785942.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">1858: A British colonial magistrate in India starts using fingerprints as a means of identifying people. It's the first-known, modern official use of the technique.

Like many innovations, this one wasn't completely new. Ancient Babylonian clay tablets recording business transactions were sometimes "sealed" with fingerprints. Officials in ancient Rome may have solved one murder by matching the culprit's hand to a bloody hand print.

China's T'ang Dynasty (618 to 907 A.D.) used fingerprints as a source of identification. A thumbprint was a legal signature for documents in Japan around the same time. A medieval Persian official noticed that the fingerprints on government documents were unique to the individual.

British physician Nehemiah Grew lectured in 1684 on the ridge patterns on fingerprints. Italian doctor Marcello Malpighi wrote about the same subject just two years later. An 1823 doctoral dissertation by Johannes Purkinje at the University of Breslau classified fingerprints into nine types.

Purkinje studied the ridges, spirals and loops with a microscope, another first in fingerprint study. But neither he nor Malpighi commented on fingerprints' potential use for identification.

William James Herschel served as a magistrate at Nuddea, India. At his request, local businessman Rajyadhar Konai made a hand print on the back of a contract July 17, 1858. Herschel wasn't initially trying to use the system for personal identification. He merely wanted to "frighten [Konai] out of all thought of repudiating his signature."

Herschel liked the idea and made it a regular requirement for Indians executing documents. He soon moved from using palm prints to just taking impressions of the right index and middle fingers. And he began to notice that no two prints were identical, and that prints didn't change as individual grew older. Herschel's 1877 request to use fingerprints to identify inmates at a Bengali prison in 1877 was denied, but the concept was moving from civil law to criminal law.

It would be 1892 before Argentine police official Juan Vucetich clearly established modern fingerprinting as a way to solve crimes and prove guilt. Vucetich was born in ... 1858.
