<title>{LITERATURE &gt; CYBERPUNK} - Rene Cigler Obit</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/arts/literature/genres/cyberpunk/rene-cigler-obit-20080995027.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Meghan Bachman wrote an obituary about our friend, René J. Cigler, who died in August. She will be missed. PORTLAND, OR -- René J. Cigler, died August 4, 2008 Born December 16, 1966, Cleveland, OH. René's childhood sounded like a happy one, she was a tomboy and had a penchant for adventure and making things with her hands. In reading the notes posted to an online memorial page for her, there were a many from people who knew her as a child, all recalling memories of her artwork. After high school she went to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. This led to a successful career in creating characters and art for companies like American Greetings, Mattel Toys, Hasbro/Oddzon, managing toy development for feature films and animation for Star Wars, Nickelodeon, Grinch, Godzilla, Scooby Doo, Harry Potter, and many more. Since 1989 René exhibited her work at galleries and museums including at the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art; Power House Gallery, Cleveland; Four Color Image Gallery, NYC; Dead Horse Gallery, Cleveland, to name a few. Her adornment sculptures were featured at fashion shows at the Limelight in NYC in 1991, The Metropolis Club, Cleveland in 1993, The Theater Artaud, San Francisco in 1993 and the Yerba Buena Center for Cultural Arts, San Francisco, in 1992. These new works, combining aluminum, metal, rubber, wire, washers, screws and found objects, were seen by tens of thousands when they were worn onstage by René's dancers as visual suport for the band Ministry during the Lollapalooza tour in 1992. In 1994 her wearable sculptures were worn by the lead actress as well as supporting actors in the MGM feature film, Tank Girl. Her work was also featured in the 1993 Warner Brothers feature film, Demolition Man. Her sculptures and wearable art were also featured in videos for Nine Inch Nails, The Melvins, Alice Cooper, Filter and the Eels. Many first heard of René through a feature article written about her in 1992 in Heavy Metal magazine. The article was 6 pages long featuring sculptures and costumes that she made. Through the years René often met fans of her work who had held onto that issue of Heavy Metal for upwards of 16 years. Not only did her work speak to a common theme many were feeling in the early '90s ? the attraction to industrial culture and dreams of a post-apacalytpic utopia ? but it was inspirational in it's juxtaposition of beautiful things and decaying things, sharp metal dangerous looking things and soft plush pliable things. Her wearable art was also featured in a 6-page layout in Penthouse magazine. Her long list of media credits also include Cleveland Magazine, bOING bOING, Axcess Magazine, Quick Japan, Bonesaw, Net Chick and Gothic Beauty Magazine. René started her own company Inkmonster in 2000 with partner Cameron Smith. Inkmonster is a design house that creates graphic brands and characters and licenses them to manufacturers to put them on products such as apparel, stationery, greeting cards etc. Character lines that René has generated are Sugar Hiccup, Lil She Creatures, Ultra Vixen, Miss Kitty, and Bone Kitty. Then in 2003 came the creation of Strange Monster, René and Cameron's apparel company. A definitive success, Strange Monster apparel and products are sold at hundreds of stores worldwide. René's professional and artistic achievements are striking ? she never sat still, always using her brain, making art, designing, running her business as well as making time to support local artists, bands and clubs. As a friend, she was ever-supportive and encouraging, pushing people around her to be better people, to excel and achieve. Naturally inquisitive, René took the time to know everything about a person, her excitement and enthusiasm were contagious. Sweet and gentle, lively and beautiful, just being near her, privy to her thoughts and ideas, was infusive and inspiring. Life is short, and shortly it will end... René lived her life as if each day was new and exciting, she was still the tomboy of her childhood, looking out through the eyes of an inquisitive little girl with blond pigtails. Her sketches, sculptures and designs were like memento mori, reminding us all that death will come, but to have fun while still among the living. Surviving are her long-time partner-in-crime and love, Cameron Smith ( and kitty Sashimi), her mother and father Evelyn and Robert Cigler and her sister Barbara Zivitch. René has left a considerable mark in the hearts of so many people ? friends and family who loved her dearly, and all the people who were ever touched by her work, and who have yet to be. Private services were held in Ohio August 11th. Memorial date in Portland TBA. More of her artwork is up here....

<title>{EUROPE &gt; NEWS AND MEDIA} - Jay Rayner reviews Tierra Brindisa</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/europe/united-kingdom/news-and-media/jay-rayner-reviews-tierra-brindisa-20081139415.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">Tierra Brindisa46 Broadwick Street, London WC1(020 7534 1690).Meal for two, including wine and service, £50-£90Eating at restaurants run by the Spanish produce suppliers Brindisa makes me do very odd things. Like count the number of anchovies on a plate. Or look up euro-to-sterling exchange rates. It brings out the obsessive compulsive in me, which is never attractive. Here's why: a few years back, when the first of their restaurants, Tapas Brindisa, opened in London's Borough I wondered out loud whether a vertical company like theirs, which imported the produce direct from Spain, ought not to be able to pass on the obvious savings to diners in their restaurants. I focused on a plate of nine very good salted anchovy fillets sold for £8. This seemed to me like excessive profiteering. It resulted in a long to and fro with one of the company's founders - read argument - which ended with us having to agree to disagree. She felt it was reasonable that the restaurants sourced their ingredients from the wholesalers at the market rate even though they owned those wholesalers. I was unconvinced.Now they have opened a new tapas restaurant in Soho and I can't help myself being forensic on the prices. The good news? There won't be an argument this time. To my eye, the prices have dropped in real terms. The bad news: it still ain't cheap. But then really good Iberian ingredients aren't. You want a plate of the sweetest of hams, with fat that melts on the tongue, from happy pigs raised on acorns in true piggy heaven? That will be 20 of your pounds, and you should be grateful for it. By my calculations, they won't even be making the standard 70 per cent gross profit. (Maths corner: Joselito Jamón Ibérico de Bellotta currently costs about £54 a kilo retail. Be generous and take £10 a kilo off that for wholesale. The serving is around 200 grams, so £9 a plate. Allow for VAT, and they really aren't hurting anyone. Apart from the pig.)The important thing, of course, is what they do with those ingredients. We are, rightly, obsessed with provenance these days, but it is useless if the kitchen then takes lots of lovely stuff and tortures it to death. The chef Simon Hopkinson once said to me that he'd rather have the cheapest of factory-raised chickens cooked by someone who knows what they are doing, than the finest of organic birds, sacrificed by a numpty. I agree.Here, they treat ingredients with the utmost care and sensitivity. It's also a smart space. Where Tapas Brindisa is all bare wood, an attempt to build a local artisanal vibe for City boys just over London Bridge, this is sleek and airy: white and olive-green tiling, a vault at the back where there is a bar next to the open kitchen. The only problem is the tables, which are tiny. A meal here is part feast, part jigsaw puzzle, as waiters and diners collaborate to find space. It's worth the effort. As well as that ham, served the right side of room temperature, we very much liked the jamón croquettes. Sure, they are just a way to use up the offcuts from the bloody expensive ham legs, but they are a very good way to do so; the little cubes of ham are set in a solid, creamy béchamel, the cylinders rolled in breadcrumbs and fried. This is bad food for good people. More subtle was the carpaccio of cod, the thinly sliced raw fish dressed with orange and marjoram. The anchovies - six of them - came with a salad of baby gem lettuce and roasted red peppers (and cost £6.75). On the meaty side there was, of course, an impeccable piece of grilled chorizo dribbling its crimson juices into the toast below, a couple of chargrilled lamb chops which demanded expert bone nibblage, and a tender quail with sweet, autumnal fruits. All of these dishes are priced at between £5 and £8, with only a couple breaching that.We finished with fresh figs, the colour of a new bruise, swamped by an avalanche of crema catalana, then blowtorched to give it the requisite caramelised shell. Best of all were tablets of bitter Rovira chocolate melting on to thin toast and dressed with olive oil and salt, served alongside a scoop of bright, fresh orange sorbet. A few weeks ago, after my Alice in Wonderland experience at El Bulli, I craved simplicity. I was taken by a friend to a top place in Barcelona for tapas. It was, as you would expect, very good. But better than Tierra Brindisa? No, not particularly. And it was certainly more expensive. <title>{EUROPE &gt; NEWS AND MEDIA} - UN appoints Nigerian to mediate peace deal</title>
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://articles.world-of-newave.info/regional/europe/united-kingdom/news-and-media/un-appoints-nigerian-to-mediate-peace-deal-2008118305.htm"/>
<summary type="text/plain">The United Nations last night appointed one of Africa's elder statesmen as a peace envoy to the Democratic Republic of Congo to mediate a deal between regional antagonists, as fears grew for the fate of tens of thousands of civilians driven into the bush by the latest upsurge in fighting.According to diplomats at the UN headquarters in New York, the former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo, was assigned by the UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon to work with the African Union to hammer out a working peace deal between the Congolese government, the Tutsi rebels in eastern Congo, and the Rwandan government which is widely believed to back them. Diplomats said last night that all sides had accepted Obasanjo as a mediator.Among his first tasks will be to help the AU and its chairman, the Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete, maintain momentum behind peace talks. Kikwete had expected a Rwandan government delegation in Dar-es-Salaam yesterday, but there was no report of its arrival. Face-to-face negotiations in Nairobi are planned within a week. Diplomats involved in talks over the weekend expressed concern that if movement towards a settlement were allowed to lag, a ceasefire negotiated last Wednesday could collapse. Ban also reappointed a Senegalese general, Babacar Gaye, as head of the UN peacekeeping force in Congo. Gaye had commanded the force, Monuc, until last month, but his Spanish successor, Lieut Gen Vincente Diaz de Villegas, resigned last week for unspecified personal reasons.Obasanjo and Gaye's appointments came on a day when the scale of the looming humanitarian disaster became clearer. An aid convoy crossed the front line escorted by UN peacekeepers and carrying medicine and water for civilians forced from their homes by a rebel offensive led by Gen Laurent Nkunda, and looting by retreating Congolese government troops. When the convoy arrived at a relief camp for the displaced population around Rutshuru, a town in the province of North Kivu recently seized by the rebels, it found the camp had been destroyed.Alice Gilbert, based in Rutshuru for the British medical charity, Merlin, said her colleagues on the convoy witnessed scenes of desolation. "It looked like a very strong wind had blown it over," Gilbert said. "It's all completely destroyed, levelled to the ground. There was a health post there; the only evidence of it now is a concrete stump."The camp's population of 22,000 appeared to have melted away, together with several tens of thousands displaced by earlier fighting. Some may have taken refuge in homes of local residents. Others clearly had fled into the bush. "We're extremely worried about where these people are," she said. "We're worried there are a lot of people living out in forest with no food, water or medical supplies."Britain announced yesterday that it was sending a flight to the region, with 18,000 blankets and plastic sheeting and water buckets. The Department for International Development estimates that there are 900,000 people displaced in North Kivu alone, of which 55,000 were forced out by last week's violence. The UN force, Monuc, has been bitterly criticised by survivors of the latest violence for failing to uphold its mandate to protect civilians. Of the 17,000-strong force only 850 are in Goma. The head of UN peacekeeping, Alain Le Roy, assessed the force over the weekend, and yesterday recommended a reconfiguration to the UN. However the force's flexibility is hampered by "caveats" imposed by national troop contributors limiting the role of their soldiers.Britain's foreign secretary, David Miliband, and his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner, reported yesterday to their fellow European ministers in Marseille on their two-day trip to the region, during which they helped start regional peace talks and warned Congolese and Rwandan leaders that they would be held to account for any further fighting.Although Miliband said use of European forces could not be ruled out, it was clear there was little interest among member states in dispatching soldiers. Kouchner said the initial emphasis would have to be on a reorganised Monuc force, with enhanced rules of engagement: "They have helicopters. They have 83 planes ... the problem is perhaps to have a wholesale change of the organisation of Monuc ... they have a robust mandate."CongoUnited NationsNigeriaRwandaInternational aid and developmentguardian.co.uk © Guardian News &amp; Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms &amp; Conditions | More Feeds</summary>
